Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

I love my GP even if he is over 100 Grin today I have new painkillers which actually work and different antibiotics which hopefully will work better. I was in actual tears yesterday from the pain Sad

Bo I love how you genuinely care that someone isn't effing up their skin willy nilly even it nearly calls for shouty caps Grin

Sophie yes enjoying your recaps of past threads

My skin is losing its redness, yay, but looking a bit dehydrated around the eyes, boo.

Tsmummy08 · 26/02/2018 18:23

Miffy Yes I still use and love the Sisley concealer :)

Yong I've been using the Dr Jart Ceramidin cream for a year and love it. I either get it from Sephora or Amazon (can't remember which seller). I'm tempted to add the serum to the cream as my skin is so bloody parched at the moment but normally the cream is perfect for me

EnidButton · 26/02/2018 18:37

Oh fgs I forgot the magazine pics again! Hang on...

SallieSallow · 26/02/2018 18:52

My skin looks awful today, like the life has been drained out of me, and I'm not even pale and interesting but an unbecoming shade of jaundiced yellow Sad using the hylamide glow tonight so fingers crossed I don't wake up orange. This cold weather is making me want to cry (I feel the cold really badly) but at least we don't have snow.

Tant Flowers I hope the new antibiotics work quickly.

Sophie I found your list useful as I always forget what people use/recommend/like/don't like, I really need to start my spreadsheet Smile

I'm getting on well so far with the AF Vit c, less sure about the Skinpep HA though it's very early days for that, and way too early to blame my dull skin on the lack of hylamide sub q in my life.

Bonus French looking pics

EnidButton · 26/02/2018 19:12

And there's an article about non-invasive cosmetic procedures but I'm slightly wary I'll get sued for copyright at this rate.

It's by Alice Hart-Davis and she talks about Botox, fillers and something called Ultherapy which is super spendy at £2000+.

Interestingly she has tiny bit of botox every 3 months in usual places but also tried it in jaw to stop grinding her teeth. I'm very interested in that. And in armpits to stop sweating!

She has a YouTube channel

Tsmummy08 · 26/02/2018 19:20

User/Sallie glad the AF vit C is going well, it's a good budget option - I've got to say I prefer the formula of the DE (and like the others there's a little flutter of fear whenever I use the pump) but the AF does the job!

I feel like crap at the moment - not sure what going on with my body but my skin is horribly dry and I'm quite bloated today. About 3 months ago I started back in the gym, lifting heavy, tracking my macros, and my fat consumption has dropped as I'm concentrating more on protein and carbs to help me gain weight - I do wonder if that's the culprit behind my lacklustre skin.... Anyone else found this after a dietary change?

Enid thanks for posting the pics - they can keep their short nails though, I like my talons to get a bit crazy from time to time Grin

EnidButton · 26/02/2018 19:20

Sallie SadFlowers It'll be the weather. All this going out into freezing cold air and back into dry heated buildings. Spring is just around the corner, hang in there,

EnidButton · 26/02/2018 19:22

TS Grin I'm stood here filing my already short nails. I'm a fan of a short red nail look. Love longer nails on other people though. Instagram has some amazing nail artists I like to browse through.

Tantpoke · 26/02/2018 19:31

enid love those pics mainly because thats exactly how I apply my makeup anyway, and my hair is always 'cool girl in a hurry' in fact everything about my look is 'girl in a hurry' Grin just happy to now know it is Parisian Chic.

SophieLion · 26/02/2018 19:35

Thanks all for your lovely words. There was really no need but very kind of you SmileFlowers

I've been adding those other vitamin C serums (and comments to my list) Pupsie - the Drunk Elephant one is quite pricey, no? Still at a bit of a loss as to the best one to buy so will be looking for advice when I need to purchase.

I started the Vichy HA today. I like it on my skin. There was advice on an earlier thread which I think said a pea-sized amount of serum and pat in - does that sound right? The fine lines around my eyes looked better after applying it but still found by lunchtime that the lines were creeping back. Any advice? Am wrecked today though as was up half the night with ill DC.

I bought a new Cicaplast and currently have Cicaplast blobs all over my face, Enid-style.

Also trying to figure out what triggers my picking at my skin. Got a new bathroom and mirror and lighting just shows up every flaw and bump so I end up "scanning" my skin every time I'm in bathroom. I really need to stop doing this. I am actually ruining my skin. It's really sad Sad

Thanks for the article photos Enid.. I used to have a lovely peach blusher from Laura Mercier and then it was discontinued Angry so I will check out the peach LM blush they mention. I like the French style!! And the short nails - that's how I have mine. Can't stand them when they get the tiniest bit long.

Hope you feel better soon Tsmummy. Not an expert and don't want to over-step the mark but have you reduced/cut out all fats? you still need the "good" fats (like avocado etc etc)

mintmagnummm · 26/02/2018 19:52

Does anyone here rate the L'Oréal expertise sls free shampoos and conditioners (everpure, eversleek) etc? Seem to be more difficult to get hold of now though

Tantpoke · 26/02/2018 19:59

Tsmummy

There are 2 main types of fats
Saturated (bad fats) – directly raise low density lipoproteins (LDLs). Source – meat & dairy products Unsaturated fats (good fats) – raise high density lipoproteins (HDLs). Source - sunflower oil, oily fish; olives; avocado

Lipoprotein = cholesterol + protein & involved with the transport of cholesterol to and from the cells
LDL – takes cholesterol from the liver and distributes it around the body. Too much LDL , excess cholesterol and fats deposited in arteries
HDL – responsible for removal of excess cholesterol from peripheral tissues and takes it to the liver for excretion

Tsmummy08 · 26/02/2018 20:06

Sophie God no! Still eating some fats but considerably less than I used to and probably not enough...

Mint Yes, those L'Oreal Expertise ones have been my Shampoo/Conditioners of choice for years. I've got a bit panicky a few times when I thought they were being discontinued but recently found them in Savers, very cheap! I've got coarse, coloured, thick hair but I don't really do much with it other than blow dry then wear in a pony-tail, which has probably caused some tension alopecia around my hairline so I'm trying to wear it down more often.... Old habits though!

Pupsiecola · 26/02/2018 20:15

It is quite pricey yes Sophie. My DH got it for me in the US as it's not available here ... yet (coming to Space NK soon). My thinking is that I've tried about 4 different Vit Cs ranging in price from TO to one I sent JDSTER (it was pricey but too strong for me). I'd rather stick to what I know works. Smile

MrsDOnofrio · 26/02/2018 20:31

Thanks to everyone for their input about rosacea. And to Bo for the link - will investigate further.

I think in the meantime I shall treat my skin as sensitive and see how it goes. I have to admit that in the last couple of days I can genuinely say that my skin is looking better and I’ve even got the elusive “bouncy” skin so changing from soap and Nivea obviously works Wink. Any particular recommendations for sensitive skin?

And I’ve just started thread 5! Getting there slowly.

SallieSallow · 26/02/2018 20:41

I'm tempted by DE Vit c, but the price is putting me off as my skin doesn't seem to tolerate Vit c very well, I'm ok with AF so far but can take a few weeks for the reaction (itchy skin) to set in. I wonder if there will be samples available when it comes to the U.K., if anyone sees or hears of any please shout Smile

I like the Parisian chic too, I'm no way pulled together enough clothes wise to remotely resemble a Parisian but I like the subtle/understated makeup look. I really need to update my going out/night time makeup as the bold/dramatic eye look is not doing me any favours now I'm older.

I think it's definitely the weather Enid the cold here this evening when I left work was hurting my face, I need a balaclava Grin I've got the hylamide glow on, it's a bit whiffy but not as bad as others I've used.

MrsDOnofrio · 26/02/2018 20:45

Ignore the question about sensitive skin recommendations - just rereading Bo’s skin barrier damage fact sheet that has loads of recommendations

Pupsiecola · 26/02/2018 20:51

Re rosacea IME redness\rosacea skincare products/ranges aren't always the best option.

JDSTER · 26/02/2018 22:04

Tsmummy go easy there, sounds like you’re working your body really hard Smile.

Enid I’ve got that copy of Red magazine. I was reading it last night. That article on Botox, fillers etc was in Good Housekeeping magazine a few months ago. Exact same one, same photo everything. Same company who own both magazines but I was a bit Hmm

mintmagnummm · 26/02/2018 22:10

Thanks tsmummy Smile

JDSTER · 26/02/2018 22:40

Bo just to pick up on a point you made earlier about SPF use with prescription grade retinoids. What SPF do you view as suitable? I understand the need for sunhat, glasses reapplication etc.

I meant to say earlier sophie, I agree with pupsie, it is good when a newbie engages with us. We get people who pop in to ask one question, which is totally fine of course, but it is nice that you’re still with us and actively contributing to threads Smile
