For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

GrinGrinGrin at Fabio - and public area. I've typo'd pubic for public in work emails before now, and busty instead of busy, never made reference to Fabio though!

And the price of those products Shock

Tantpoke · 27/02/2018 22:49

I've fallen down the rabbit hole of Harvey Nics beauty products, I may be a while, eat me, drink me, buy me

EnidButton · 27/02/2018 23:09

They send you pretty nice samples with your orders and it's always wrapped nicely.

EnidButton · 27/02/2018 23:13

miffy I really like cream blush. Perfect for 'no make up' make up. Never seems to last long on me but still like it.

Tantpoke · 28/02/2018 00:56

I'm just poking my head up from the rabbit hole and off to Bedfordshire as it were.
Liking the sound of the added samples, I'm very easily swung Wink

Hi skincare gurus!!! I need some heavy duty eye cream. I’ve been using my retinol 0.5 around my eyes for the last week or two but not sure I should be!

It’s my most ageing area. Crepey etc.... I use hydraluric acid plus have been using this
niod.com/product/fractionated-eye-contour-concentrate-15ml

But thinking I could be doing more. What should I use?! Thanks 😘

SophieLion · 28/02/2018 11:24

Phew.... have just finished reading (well there might have been a little bit of skimming at the endBlush) all the previous threads SmileSmileSmile

I don't claim to be an expert by any means but certainly know more than I did a few weeks ago - plus I know more about all you lot SmileWink- and seen lots of gorgeous photos of Olli (loving the curls and the colouring - I used to do the CGM too. Contemplating growing out my pixie at the moment)

SophieLion · 28/02/2018 11:25

Hello Rosie, can't really advise you but I'm sure one of the gurus will be here soon.

Pupsiecola · 28/02/2018 18:19

Hi Rosie. From what I've read, the jury is out on how effective products specifically for the eyes are. Some seem to think it's marketing/making you buy two products. Others have found sth that really works for them.

I was using The Ordinary caffeine eye serum, which I keep in the fridge, but tbh I forget half the time these days. I have lately been using the LRP Redermic for eyes. My eyes have got noticably more crepey in the lasts few months I think. I'm not sure if there's much I can do it about it!

Be careful what you take inside the orbital bone. I'm no expert, but my understanding is that the skin there is way thinner and more delicate than the rest of the face, and therefore products can be too heavy/rich for it, and cause more issues than the solve (puffiness for example). Some people find this even with a dedicated eye cream, but seem to be okay with a serum which is lighter.

Hope that helps a little, and I'll be watching for suggestions on products which may be worth a try!

miffy2 · 28/02/2018 20:26

Around the eyes I use

Verso eye serum. This contains retinol but in suitable amounts. I use it x3 nights a week when I use retinol on my face. As mentioned above I pat it on the orbital bone only. Creams apparently can move up and be absorbed as needed by themselves.

On other nights I use Kiehl's midnight recovery for eyes.

In the mornings I use Olay total (the one that Nadine B recently recommended). I had some Boots points to spare and it was discounted. I have been using it for a few weeks and so far so good.

I suffer from dreadful puffy undereyes. For whatever reason they are improving recently. I have added in more water and removed a lot of sugar from my diet so this is helping I am sure.

I used to use the TO caffeine but found it drying and irritating so gave up.

EnidButton · 28/02/2018 20:29

For a temporary effect Skyn gel eye patches are good. They tighten and brighten the area and make it look refreshed. Brilliant for me when I'm having a bad health day but don't want it to show.
m.feelunique.com/p/Skyn-ICELAND-Hydro-Cool-Firming-Eye-Gels

Not something for everyday use (unless you have lots and lots of money I suppose! Grin) but very good before an event or when you want an extra something.

Pupsiecola · 28/02/2018 20:43

I use those Enid; I keep them in the fridge.

miffy2 · 28/02/2018 20:54

oh thanks for the reminder, Enid - I bought a pack of these form M&S during one of their 20% promos. Must stick them in the fridge :) I have two more snow days so that would be an ideal opportunity! Might even do a mask.

SallieSallow · 28/02/2018 20:57

Rosie I use alpha h eye gel, it can be used all over the eyelid but it's more of an instant fix rather than a long term treatment. I've tried La Roche Posay redermic eye cream which has retinol, but it made my eyes sting even though I was very careful to use it on the orbital area only. I now keep any retinoids/actives well away from my eyes, & just take my hylamide sub q (hyaluronic acid) up round my eyes at night and use the alpha h eye gel in the morning.

Skinpep do a very reasonably priced eye serum and eye mask/gel patch things which I'm thinking of trying, the gel patches are super cheap for a trial pack skinpep.com/collagen-growth-factor-eye-patch/

My face is flaking off at the moment Sad definitely weather/central heating related but I've cut my routine right back to thermal water spray, Hylamide, FAB ultra repair and cicaplast anti peeling gel, I'll keep that up until the Beast departs. I'm not using any powder either as it's just clinging to the flaky patches.

EnidButton · 28/02/2018 22:08

Keeping them in the fridge is a brilliant idea! I'm going to order some and I'll do that before using them.

I over did it last week so my glands are up, throat sore and there's not a bone that doesn't ache. Usual crap. Boring. But my skin is looking much better 🧐 Weird! I've eaten a couple of eggs and avocados the last couple of days. Maybe I needed some fats.

EnidButton · 28/02/2018 22:23

Are you using hotter water than usual Sallie? I've noticed my skin gets sensitive and flaky if I've been having extra hot showers. In this weather it's hard to resist though.

Sophie I'm really impressed with your dedication! That was a lot to plough through! Meant to say yesterday, I hope you're not still picking on yourself (literally and) figuratively speaking, there's enough arseholes people in life who'll do that, you don't have to join in. Be kind to yourself. Flowers If you ever feel a bit anxious or obsessed by your skin, It's almost never about that really. I think it's a form of control. If something else is happening that's causing worry or stress but it's not something you can influence or change we often channel that frustration into something we feel we can control. Like our appearance or whatever. Best just to walk away from the mirror for a day or two when that happens. Just use it from a bit of a distance and ban yourself from any up close studying. Brew That goes for anyone who ever starts to feel anxious about it. Probably too deep Grin but just talking from past experience.

Why is this [santa] still here? I thought that was a dodgy peeping Santa?

RosieLig · 28/02/2018 22:43

Hi

Thanks!! Yes my skin doesn't feel the best today. I think I've got slight rosacea - weirdly better in the sun but the cold/central heating combo sets it off. I've been using 0.5 retinol every other night - how long till I see results? My skin seems worse rather than better. Its been a couple of months and I've built up quite slowly. I might go back to this which I liked but it was quite gentle
www.boots.com/philosophy-help-me-30g-10126664?cm_mmc=bmm--Google+Boots+PLAs--BAU--C=%28GB%3AWhoop%21%29+Boots+Shopping+-+Category+-+Beauty+-+Desktop%28GB%3AWhoop%21%29+Philosophy&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_9KrqtbJ2QIVpbXtCh3zNgbbEAQYASABEgK70_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I like the look of that Verso serum. It's the crepeyness that is bothering me. The Skyn patches look good too. Thanks!!! Smile

Tantpoke · 28/02/2018 23:04

I always pat my TO retinoid under my eyes as well as swiping acid there I just kind of figured thats where its needed most.

Very occaisionally my under eyes will look a bit crepey but once I've moisturised its fine.

If my under eyes look baggy and dark then I always put on cold teabags followed by teaspoons I've put in the fridge.

I know the Body Shops elderflower eye gel works really well at tightening, in fact rather too well which is why I dont use it.

Pupsiecola · 28/02/2018 23:12

That Skinpep eye serum looks interesting. I've not heard of that brand before. Anyone tried it?

Tantpoke · 28/02/2018 23:24

No but I looked it up last week or so so its been bandied about somewhere recently.
