Hi folks,

Some of you may already receive our weekly Swears By newsletter, which is a round-up of products (predominantly style and beauty goodies) that Mumsnetters have been recommending to each other. As it's the end of the year, we thought we would round up the most popular products from 2017. Feel free to let us know what your personal best buys of 2017 were too!

If you want to be first to know about the next cult product, you can sign up to the newsletter here and you can also check out the Swears By page here

Mumsnet Swears By is free and independent from advertising but if you buy something through our posts, we may get a small share of the sale. You can find out more here

Happy New Year!

Alice & Charlotte
xx

If I were a willowy long limbed lovely then I think that hush dress would look fab. Like someone upthread said - long slim legs and edgy ankle boots and it would be fab.

Sadly I am a long torsoed, shortish-legs lady with a hint of a cankle.

Detest the word frumpy. Anything can be frumpy on a crane that doesn't suit or styled badly.

missfliss · 31/12/2017 16:52

Grr frame not crane

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2017 17:03

But 'old fashioned' on me could look incredible on my daughter, or indeed on another woman the same age as I am. And I rarely look 'fashionable' but that doesn't mean I necessarily look 'frumpy'. People on here use it as an easy catch-all for all sorts of really different items and with no idea of the wearer's looks, personality or how they will wear the said item.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2017 17:04

And Sarah wasn't saying it means 'tarty' but that it's an equally loaded word.

Deathraystare · 31/12/2017 17:20

Not high fashion. Not life changing or life saving in any way BUT bought two pair of leggings in Primarni - with velvet insides! I thought how weird but how warm! Not that flattering unless you have very skinny legs but thw warmth! Even I am now feeling the cold a bit so these are great. Just looks a bit strange when on the loo looking down at 'inside out' velvet. Also bought some from Poundland as well as some gloves.

Feel better about facing the winter now!

CountFosco · 31/12/2017 17:29

It means dowdy right?? Unfashionable?

Nothing like tarty!!

What the PP said was it was a loaded word in the same way 'tarty' is because it's gender specific. Women are sluts/madonnas, mutton dressed as lamb/frumpy. There is no such thing as a woman getting it right.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 31/12/2017 20:44

I want to hear about the best buys!! Not the definition of frumpy.

Scabbersley · 31/12/2017 20:45

Me too!! Frumpy is fine. Get in with the reccos!

corrianderisthedevil · 31/12/2017 20:54

Can we get back to the best buys please?

Scabbersley · 31/12/2017 20:57

my favourite coat of the year

Apileofballyhoo · 31/12/2017 21:44

I'm also wondering about the 5% Schnitzel. I'm very impressed with the 2% - I've only been using it for about 10 days - I tried it, left it for a few days, then every 2nd night and now every night (caution, meet wind). My 11s are definitely less pronounced.

Skin feels fine when I put it on, but when I put on moisturiser on top it is a bit stingy/prickly. Same when I put on sunscreen in the morning. No redness or anything and my skin looks well. Horrible dry crepey bit under chin seems dryer though so I'm not sure whether I should not use it there.

Was having a good browse of Deciem today. I'm going to order more stuff - I'm pretty confident I understand what I want to get now!

mrwalkensir · 31/12/2017 22:29

yep - largely down to build - my sister and daughter both look casually gorgeous in their seasalt waterproofs - I'd look like a weeble

goose1964 · 31/12/2017 22:45

Poundland do a foot moisturiser that comes sachets, inside are a pair of little sock like bags. You wear them for 20 mins and your feet are soft as a baby's

One of my Best Buy's this year are Decleor Aromessence Iris Rejuvenating Night Balm, not to say it suits everyone skin type but for my dry sensitive skin it works a treat, it goes on a bit greasy (it's a hard waxy balm that NEEDS warming up between your fingers) but after a while it sinks in and in the morning my skin is very soft and just lovely. I'm 39 and not too wrinkly, but you just can't beat it for softness and the smell is devine!

BusterGonad · 01/01/2018 11:18

Another one for me are Sainsburys skinny jeans, I'm not saying the are completely perfect, but if worn under longer tops and jumpers they are great as they don't give me a muffin top (medium to high rise) and they are stretchy so they are very comfy. If I was exposing the zip area and waist band I'd want a different brand but as I've said for longer tops and comfort you can't go wrong!

BusterGonad · 01/01/2018 11:24

Here's another Playtex lace flower bras, they are not hugely sexy but if you get measured and wear the correct size they are very comfy and hold your boobs up to where they should be, they do large sizes (34FF here) and you can get slightly padded or normal. I wore my new one out last night and my boobs where standing proud! lol. They are not push up bras but give you a lovely lifted but natural look. Great wide straps too....god I feel old saying that! Confused

BusterGonad · 01/01/2018 11:25

Here.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2018 11:27

I've just bought Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair, which my skin seems to be liking so far, although v early days.

Also, we've just been in Germany and I bought a pot of really thick Nivea cream for about a euro. Absolutely lovely for aching feet!

BusterGonad · 01/01/2018 11:34

Remus I love thick Nivea too, you should also try Astral, it's lovely stuff when you're just craving comfort in your face! Iyswim!

Cocolepew · 01/01/2018 11:45

this
I have ridiculously puffy eyes and have been using this for a couple of weeks. It's made a major difference. I'm not sure if you are supposed to use it on your lids, Im guessing not. But I use a tiny but and its helped my baggy eyelids too.
It does say it helps dark shadows, but I took that with a pinch of salt, my dark rings are practically purple. I had a good peer last night and think the shadows are definitely better.

Cocolepew · 01/01/2018 11:47

Sorry link didn't work.

I also bought a pair of Paper and Stitch Lift and Shape jeans, super comfortable, fit really well, flattering on, no gap at waistband and come up to mid rise. I went and bought another pair in a smaller size just before before Christmas as I lost a tiny bit of weight and though the originals still look good I want a pair for smarter wear.

Apileofballyhoo · 01/01/2018 12:22

Thanks for that FB link bagel.
