POAL to me is the oldest of old ladies. (ssssh, don't tell the main boards or I'll get deleted) Grin

I wore PP Sahara Noir again yesterday (needed gentle spice as had sinus head again) Went to bed in Dune.

Ordered some creams and stocking fillers from FeelUnique and one of the free samples they offer with purchase is 1.5ml of Tom Ford anthracite something or other. I expect to be massively underwhelmed.

SoTD PP JM salt sage woody thingy

PerfumeIsAMessage · 04/11/2017 15:01

I have a carrier bag full of quinces to cook this afternoon or tomorrow, so if MrsM fancies coming over to sniff my saucepan she is quite welcome!

MrsMacNally · 04/11/2017 15:42

Yes to rose. Final floral is quite obscure. Made by a now dead woman whose business is famous for something else

Find me a fragrance that smells like that saucepan Pest!

MrsMacNally · 04/11/2017 16:30

Sorry for patchy comms. Checking phone surreptitiously from family event. Spices are the fourth note so you have that cracked too. (Although, again with you on the resins). One floral outstanding, if you get that, you're virtually there name-wise.

MrsPestilence · 04/11/2017 17:15

Roses are red ,violets are black and cyclamen could be any old colour. Made by a florist. I think I have it.

Yay!!!GlitterballStarGlitterball

Discontinued, but still widely available. Have seen for as little as £6.99 for 50ml - which I think is a complete bargain for this dark spicy/resinous rose.

MrsPestilence · 04/11/2017 17:38

I too have a bowl of quinces that need sorting. I tend to cook them into sauce with onion, chilli, white wine and thyme. DS1 calls them lemon turnips, bless he is 26 Confused
Quince oil do for you MrsM?

Are we talking about Elizabeth Arden or Estée Lauder? famous for makeup rather than perfume. I’m stumped which perfume it is although I’ve enjoyed the chance to smell cyclamen

MrsPestilence · 04/11/2017 18:29

Jane Packer, Bluebell

I’m now doused in 4160 Tuesdays Rhubarb and Custard and my DH walked in and said ‘whoa it smells of rhubarb in here’ and I was over the other side of our (admitidly small) living room. When I explained it was rhubarb and custard he agreed that’s exactly what it smells like. So there you go. Amazing silage and smells exactly as you’d expect. The only thing is say is that the vanilla custard base has a weird smokey/tarry opening which smells a bit rough. Do you think that will soften over time as it’s quite newly made? It soon mellows though so not a massive issue. It’s definitely the vanilla base as it’s coming through the vanilla crumble EDP and not the rhubarb and citrus cologne

BluebellGal · 04/11/2017 18:42

Well done Pest Star

MrsPestilence · 04/11/2017 18:45

Vanilla can do that Blue, hopefully it will settle.

Blind sniffing complete, we did:
Pest A (Caron Royal Bain), Pest B (Fat Wood L’Atelier Amber Pampelmouse Rose), Pest C (Bvlgari Jasmin Noir).
Bluebell A (Miller Harris Noix de Tubereuse), Bluebell B (Bath House Velvet Orchid and Cardamom), Bluebell C (Merchant of Venice Byzantium Saffron).
MrsMc A (Caldey Island No 1), MrsMc B (L’Artisan Passage d’Enfer), MrsMc C (Jane Packer Red Rose, Black Violets and Cyclamen).

It was great fun, tricky on the nose and made me read up on notes. I now want to get one of these kits so that I can learn to identify everything. So who's up for being part of the next group?

PiaM hope you are not too disappointed by the Tom Ford sample.

Thank you for playing Pest & Blue and letting me smell your lovely stuff. The chase to identify was terrific fun. Highly recommended!

Think Green has identified a non-sniff variant we could all play too: 'Name that Perfume!' - we just need to take it in turns to think of a scent and setting everyone else off with some starting clues.

Thanks for the PW link Pest - interesting! 4160s used to do a brilliant 'chemistry lab' set for people who couldn't attend a makers workshop in person. (Someone on one of the early perfume threads tipped us off when they went into a winter sale - maybe Jan 2016? Looks like they were discontinued Sad. They were a pretty good substitute with a reasonably large palette plus no time pressure...enough to make multiple bottles).

The mind-bending aspect is how things smell in combination rather than on their own. A life's work to get a grip on that?....

MrsMacNally · 04/11/2017 19:17

Thank you too for the quince oil link - that is intriguing!

And thank you both for the Copal Azur and Jasmin et Cigarettes respectively - both stunning beauties.

BluebellGal · 04/11/2017 19:20

piam I must order some PP to try - looking to put in an order for Christmas. Hope the TF comes up trumps!

I’ve really enjoyed the blind sampling- thanks mrsmac and Pest!

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 04/11/2017 19:21

Evening folks. The blind smelling has been fun to watch and you really do know your smells!

Excited to hear that the Rhubarbs are landing. Will hopefully get my paws on mine on Monday. along with some more Guerlains I've taken a punt on on ebay

Not speaking of Guerlain, soy was the last of my Jicky sample. It really does cone up aniseedy on me for the first few minutes. Like it but not enough for a FB. Although tip a shed load of vanilla in and obviously it's a winner.

Inspired by the Parisienne thread SotD was Paris 1948. Lovely but it didn't make me thin and fashionable. Ah well... (Gallic shrug)

BluebellGal · 04/11/2017 19:28

Yes and thank you for the extras!

I would also recommend blind sampling to anyone thinking of it. Completely removes your predudices and really gets you to concentrate on what you’re smelling. My nose was better than I thought it’d be (but way behind pest and mrsm

I found the decanting and packing easier than I thought I would. Just got spray bottles from eBay, sprayed perfume directly into the little bottles (no mess) and wrapped in bubble wrap. Easy peasy!

OCSockOrphanage · 04/11/2017 20:11

I went to find PoaL and came up with the remnants of my carefully looked after non PP dupe of Noir de Noir. The difference is in the richness. The TF is thicker and much more dense. I am not certain that it's better or more to my taste, but it is very solid. I tend to prefer lighter notes, but the intensity is gorgeous occasionally.

MrsMacNally · 04/11/2017 20:11

Pest - I feel the need to put this temptation in your path... Jardins d'Ecrivains sample set. Unless I've cocked up, shipping costs looks bearable.

MrsMacNally · 04/11/2017 21:13

OC - I discovered Red Roses, Black Violets & Cyclamen when looking for a dark rose as a more affordable alternative to Noir de Noir. Not identical, but in a similar ballpark. Shout if you want me to send you a little bit to sniff.

MrsPestilence · 04/11/2017 21:26

MrsM I may have just ordered that £6.99 bottle off e-bay.

The samples will still be there after Christmas

did you see the Cocottes ones

Any volunteers for starting name that perfume? Green you were so controlled with the Byzantium Saffron, do you want to go first?

CountFosco · 04/11/2017 22:23

I have bought 30ml bottles of Ealing Green, Doe in the Snow and What I did on my Holidays as Christmas presents for my family plus I got a 9ml bottle of Tart's Knicker Drawer for myself. Feels very wrong buying the perfumes I love myself for others but they are all very different so I'll suggest trying each others perfume as an experiment. I'll be watching out for the half price offers of the ones I like.

Popped into town today and gave myself a squirt of Chanel Coco based on the notes in Fragantica. I wanted an orangy spicy perfume but there's something in the top note of all Chanel's I've owned (all presents) that I'm not fussed about. But it then calmed to something smoother. Might have helped to not be overspraying all the 4160 of course.

And here's me worrying it might have sent you screaming to the hills...
