SOTD is Clinique Wrappings, after a Badedas bath. Christmas is coming!

count thanks for the reassurance. I am so paranoid after the last one.

MrsMacNally · 12/11/2017 19:00

EK - the opening probably is the best bit, so if jasmine is spoiling it for you perhaps try a sniff of Be Careful What You Wish For? (A fruit oud - don't think jasmine is listed).

No, it's not obligatory but we will try to turn you. Grin Remind us of your five favourite perfumes of all time, and the notes you love, and loathe, and we can see if you've already tried the most obvious matches. (Green - this might be a job requiring your extensive knowledge...Smile).

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 12/11/2017 19:26

Evening. Hope the weekends have been good for all. DS2 has another cold so hoping a few pre-emptive puffs on the inhaler will keep everything in check...

Yesterday was 4160 Silk, Lace and Chocolate. Not for me. Don't quite now what silk and lace are supposed to smell of but the chocolate was a strong whack of that not quite real taste of a chocolate yogurt (bleurgh!). Glad that one was a free sample... Made up for it today with a bit of Dark Heart of Old Havana. Much much better!!

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/11/2017 19:46

I've just had a Badedas bath! My treat for a Sunday evening when I am on my own.

explodingkittens · 12/11/2017 20:08

Oooh well that's a challenge - can I get it down to 5? It might have to be a non-definitive list Grin but I'd say the following are well up there:

Avignon
L'air de rien
Une rose chypree
Diorissimo
24 Faubourg

I love incense, spice, smoke, wood notes (although that could be seasonal), musk, rose, violet, aldehydes, ?benzoin. I don't get on particularly well with heavy tuberose, jasmine, vanilla, or citrus (although don't mind oranges). I quite like scents that challenge me Smile.

From 4160s I've tried the following:
Dark Heart (love)
Shazam (like but don't love)
MitPG (like but don't love)
Goodbye Piccadilly (like but don't love)
Ealing Green (meh)
Invisible Ben (meh)
TKD (nope)

I could be happy with just loving Dark Heart, I suppose, but given the range of 4160s and how much I enjoy the brand as a whole, I'd really love to find some other winners!

MrsMacNally · 12/11/2017 21:00

EK So, on the darker and more challenging end of things I'd recommend sniffing:

Parallel - nice frankincense-based oriental.
Both the Firesides (Pest knows these better than me).
Who Knew - a green smokey rose.
The Buddahwood Box - quite a feisty, rich, strong wood.
Black Velvet Cafe - dark coffee and an indigo-ish patchouli.
Evil Max - cherry tobacco and leather.
The Lion Cupboard - aromatic herbs and woods.

Haven't tried Eau My Soul but the notes include incense.

I love The Great Randello too, but it's a tobacco gourmand an may be too sweet for you?

JanetStWalker · 12/11/2017 21:31

Can you tell me a bit about Wrappings please, Judy. Is it as festive as I hope it is?

Judydreamsofhorses · 12/11/2017 21:42

janet Wrappings is green and bright, but not in a springy way. I am crap at this, but I would say it has oakmoss in it, and maybe a bit of lavender. I don’t think on it as a particularly wintry scent, but I think Clinique pretty much discontinued it and now bring it out as a limited edition around Christmas. My bottle is ancient.

explodingkittens · 12/11/2017 22:03

Lovely list, thank you 'MrsM - I particularly like the sound of Black Velvet Cafe, Parallel and Who Knew. Just need to hope they come up on the half-price offer soon. I'm not giving up on 4160 yet!

Judy, I really like the sound of Wrappings too...might try and seek some out.

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/11/2017 22:52

Explodingkittens - I have 9 ml of Black Velvet Cafe that you can have happily, as it smells like Izal medicated toilet paper on me. PM me your address and it's yours! I may also have a tester somewhere of Who Knew?

Oh I had forgotten about the Lion Cupboard and the Great Randello - both fabulous.

MrsMacNally · 12/11/2017 23:38

Have just had a spray of The Lion Cupboard and it reminds me a bit of Tabu tonight.

Did anyone else hear Dariush Alavi on The Film Programme (R4)? Was talking about attributing scents to film characters (discussion focused on The Graduate).

JanetStWalker · 13/11/2017 00:10

Thanks Judy, I was half tempted to blind buy a bottle but I bet it's been reformulated to buggery - god forbid we should be allowed to enjoy our oakmoss these days.

SOTD has been 1990s Chanel No.22, everything No.5 wishes it was.

MrsSchadenfreude · 13/11/2017 00:15

I love Chanel no. 22. The reformulated version is not as good as the earlier incarnation, but it's still lovely. And much nicer than no. 5.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 13/11/2017 06:12

PP do a version of Wrappings. I have that version and its pretty spot on. Old ELs are very very good and the writer (can't remember if it was LT or Barbara H) spot on when saying EL is (or at least was) a much underrated perfume maker.
I bought some Badedas in the summer because of you lot! Can anyone remember Midas bubble bath? That was like a cheaper but powerhouse version. Same herb/citrus concocation.
I hated Chanel 22. Maybe I should dig out my sample and give it another go.
No Sotd yet but think it might be something that I wear for me, despite it being something that will scare the PM loving 14 yr old girls I need to face in 45 minutes.

explodingkittens · 13/11/2017 09:00

Morning all! MrsS that's terribly generous of you. I'll pm you.

Continuing with the theme, SOTD is Goodbye Piccadilly. Giving this a proper run-out. I really enjoy the lavender and violet top notes in this, and then I do get some nice leather notes after about an hour. Sadly, two hours in, it's gone oddly minty on me! At least I smell fresh and clean I suppose...

teta · 13/11/2017 10:08

Wearing Tobacco Rose today, which after the initial umph seems to settle to a low silage of salty skin-toned Rosiness. Do I need this when I have 15mls of Montales Roses Musk to use up first?
For the poster looking at Roses , good wintry Roses are La fille de Berlin by Serge Lutens - pure deep red rose or a winey Rose like Guerlain Nahema. If you like powdery perfumes then Drole d Rose by L Artisan Parfumeur is gorgeous .Also Lipstick Rose by Malle is a real femme fatale Rose.Jacinthe et Rose by E Coudray is also very pretty - Rose with hyacinth.
Rosine perfumes specialise in Roses and have a really good sample pack so they're definitely worth trying .

BluebellGal · 13/11/2017 12:39

SOTD is ELdO You or Someone Like You ... in all it’s minty fresh greeness- feels a bit out of season and bit of a shift from Salk the 4160 Vanilla I’ve been wearing recently. But my colleague just said it smells a bit of Christmas pine trees. It’s got that mouth tingling freshness about it (same thing happens when I sniff those fake pine scented Xmas needles they sell in John Lewis and garden centres)

BluebellGal · 13/11/2017 12:40
  • a shift from all the 4160 vanilla (eg rhubarb & Custard)
BluebellGal · 13/11/2017 12:41

Thanks for the teta for the Elaine tip - that sample pack is going on my Xmas list Smile

BluebellGal · 13/11/2017 12:41

^ sorrry teta phone is changing all my words!

GlovesAndHatsAndFloofyCats · 13/11/2017 17:22

Oooh badedas. I love Badedas but only buy it at Christmas as it’s expensive. Which seems ridiculous really, given the amount I spend on perfume...Hmm The shower gel/shampoo all in one is also lovely, I do get that for hospital stays!

I still haven’t got my perfume mojo back Angrygreen I tried Alien Essence Absolue as you made it sound so lush...all I get is Karvol I have resorted to good old Paloma Picasso for comfort reasons.

4160s are interesting, for me, as they have something in them which identifies them as the same house/nose etc in a way other perfumes don’t. JHAG is the same, and also Chanel, I feel. Maybe it’s just my amateur nose that has an inability to distinguish this normally from other brands?

This seems like the place to mention Christmas scents, not necessarily perfume? I have a secret love for Scentsicles, especially the fake Christmas tree. DH says they smell like toilets. Hmm Anyone else have any strong feelings on this subject? I also like Shearer Frankincense candles. Vastly superior to ubiquitous Yankee candles cookies/gingerbread/cookies/cinnamon/cookies types, IMHO.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 13/11/2017 17:36

Serendipitously I also went for Paloma Picasso today after my mingy moment with the AC sample the other day. PP is a thing of great beauty and I've been sniffing myself all day.

My order from FeelUnique arrived with the TF sample freebie. It's called Anthracite. It reminds me of something... it's got that men's cedary aftershave thing going on, but something else as well.

I love love love Christmassy smells. Have house full of candles always (though prefer melts as they are stronger) I love Yankee and don't care. Grin

MrsMacNally · 13/11/2017 18:06

Have yet to find the ultimate Xmas scent. Pest suggested layering to achieve the depth/excess I'm after, and that sounds right. So far I do like Captured by Candlelight x Black Velvet Cafe, and also Shazam! X The Dark Heart. I may also need to try Yatagan x Sahara Noir too. Pine trees and church Grin.

Still want to find the ultimate Xmas gourmand. Thought Arabie might be it, but that felt thinner/lighter than expected. Need plums, dried fruit and booze, with cloves and cinnamon, on top of a really dark sticky resinous base. If I manage to do a 4160s makers workshop in 2018, so far this would be my project.

explodingkittens · 13/11/2017 18:16

Home and in MMM By the Fireplace. A fragrantica review calls it 'freshly-torched creme brûlée' and I'd concur. I can get on board with this kind of vanilla, despite my post upthread, because there's enough of a deep smoky edge to stop it being too much of an overly-sweet gourmand. I like this a lot.

MrsMacNally · 13/11/2017 18:47

You probably should try The Great Randello - creme caramel and pipe tobacco smoke.SmileSmile
