I prefer the Ted Baker wrap coats, but I'm not into fussy buttons and stuff, I feel the cheapen the look. I adore a red coat though, it's a lovely colour.

RidingWindhorses · 23/10/2017 07:56

I don't have a problem with the price tag, I couldn't afford £850 now but I have in the past.

The problem for me is that it's doesn't look like £850 worth of coat. For that price I'd expect beautiful 100% wool or wool + cashmere. Nor does it look designer it just looks high street. It's just a bit meh all round.

If I were the OP I'd either invest the money in a coat that really looks its value, and would actually keep me warm, or just go for a high street version.

ProperLavs · 23/10/2017 07:56

It's not a beautiful coat, it's not an ugly coat it's just an ordinary looking coat for a ridiculous price. I was expecting something extraordinary, especially for that money. Buy that and you will have been robbed..

HotelEuphoria · 23/10/2017 07:57

I could spend that on a coat but I wouldn't because a) I get bored by next season and b) I don't like it Grin

SuburbanRhonda · 23/10/2017 07:59

The item description says it requires a specialist leather clean.

So not only will it cost you a small fortune to buy, it will continue to cost you in maintenance over the years.

MerryMarigold · 23/10/2017 08:03

All those years my mum told me to stand up straight and put my shoulders back! I should've been a Burberry model!

Laiste · 23/10/2017 08:10

The price? We all buy what we can afford. What's expensive to one is peanuts to someone else. There's people in the world to whom a £1000 is minimum spend. A coat to chuck down in the hall and let the cat sit on it. So the price is subjective.

Now - at the risk of being 'mean', the look of it - i really honestly can't see what is catching the OPs eye so much she wants to spend 3 times her budget. Most women you see out are wearing either a mac, a parker or a wool coat. This one's ... a wool coat.

IF i was stood close enough for long enough and noticed the short sleeves i'd wonder what was the point of having a warm coat (funnel neck ect) with half the sleeves missing.

I quite like it OP.

However, I have to say, I don’t think i’d pay £850 for it. I’d say definitely go and try on, have a look at it in the flesh before buying.

ShirleyPhallus · 23/10/2017 08:23

All criticism isn't "mean", but S&B used to be full of people disagreeing they'd just do it in a nicer way. Ie "not my thing but if you like that how about XYZ"

Now it seems to be people lining up to tell the OP how she has no taste / more money than sense / what she likes is incredibly ugly etc etc (not necessarily on this thread but that vibe)

It's like AIBU has spilled over to here

In my very limited experience, top end clothes often look unremarkable in photos. Even when you see them for real and try them on, you may still think, 'It's very nice but how is it worth that much?' It's only when you've worn it all day then forgotten to hang it up and you still don't need to iron it in the morning that you begin to get it.

I have a crush at the moment on a coat with a similar price tag. I'm not posting a link because it'll just bring out even more people going, 'You fool - Primark have got one for tuppence that's much nicer' or 'You fool - don't you know what's happening in Syria?' or the odd wannabe Joan Rivers, trying out their routine. And besides it's a fantasy coat that I could never afford, but if I could, I have no doubt it would look good for the rest of my life, although it would probably date before then as all clothes do, even the classics.

But then again, there are brands where you're mostly paying for the Bond St rent, the Harpers Bazaar promo and the 'Fuck you, I'm rich' factor. I don't know which camp Burberry is in but there will be posters who do.

And well said Enid, on calling out the '87 year-old' comment. Wine So much shittiness round here at the moment, they should start giving out wellies.

SleepingInYourFlowerbed · 23/10/2017 08:40

I don't particularly like the coat OP but you do and that's the point. I don't understand people saying they wouldn't spend as much on a red coat and go for grey or black. I would never buy a grey or black coat!

If you love the coat and know you would wear it, go for it. I bought a Ted Baker coat that was not to everyone's taste about 10 years ago and I still wear it to this day and still love it.

I wondered if it might be, baby. I've been looking for a second hand, Humphrey Bogart style trench coat lately and my impression is that Aquascutum wear better.

Anatidae · 23/10/2017 08:49

Grumpy models with greasy hair :)

Anatidae · 23/10/2017 08:50

Do post it floisme

Always love to drool over a beautiful coat.

Me too. Price doesn't come into it for me (unless it's obviously a rip off like an 850 polyester blend with bad stitching) if you can afford it then fine. I think a lot of people are having a disconnect between OPsthread title and post with the coat that was posted.

Floisme · 23/10/2017 08:57

Not on this thread Ana - sorry. There's nothing much to drool over anyway as it just looks like a coat from H&M in the photo. Plus I'm not in a feisty enough mood at the moment.

LavenderHills · 23/10/2017 08:58

I don't have a spare £1700 rattling around in my bank account...but if I DID, I'd go the Max Mara Teddy Bear coat Smile

leighdinglady · 23/10/2017 08:59

I bought a red Burberry duffel coat in a similar fabric 12 years ago. It still looks beautiful and I’ve worn it every year. Money well spent

silkpyjamasallday · 23/10/2017 09:00

I think if you love it go and try it out OP, I think that it could well last you many many years and therefore will be worth the money. Burberry also do alterations in store on their coats so you can have it nipped and tailored perfectly for you. The sleeves probably won't be too short on someone who isn't a 6'2" teenager.

@Floisme I can attest to aquascutums quality, I got a 1970s camel wool trench on eBay for a pittance and it is perfection. Took me a while to find one in the size I wanted but I've been wearing it constantly for years and it looks as good as new. That is why expensive coats are worth the money if you look after them and keep them for a long time, I think I will still be wearing my coat into pension age and I don't doubt that it will last.

herecomesthsun · 23/10/2017 09:00

Now I love the look of the Teddy Bear coat (though I can't wear camel)

Anatidae · 23/10/2017 09:01

No worries floisme

I do love these longer line coats - I’m short and apple shaped so I struggle to find one thing that suits - also it MUST be wool because it gets down to -30 and below here, so a nice tailored coat isn’t always the most appropriate. I have a down parka and I really want to upgrade it - when it’s so cold you do need a jacket that can cope and alas those are never cheap. I’d like my next one to be an investment one and am thing of paying up to 800 ish for it.

Anyone who tries the ‘you can get one in primark for thruppence ha’penny’ can come stand out in -30 for a few hours and see if they revise their opinion ;)

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not loaded and I do love a bargain. At the same time I find the invasion of the hair shirt brigade here annoying - it’s supposed to be a nice place where we look at nice things!

EyeRollChampion · 23/10/2017 09:06

That model looks like she's about to keel over.

I don't care how well made it is, it isn't worth £850. It's only 3% cashmere!!!

That is 75% wool, lined with viscose, not a lot of work... absolute daylight robbery.
