I think it's a very classy looking, lovely coat. If you can afford to treat yourself, @OP, then I say absolutely go for it! I think it's beautiful.

I'm a bit surprised, as well, because I've thought Burberry were a bit too "experimental" these days for my taste. Mostly I really hate what they're doing with massive bell sleeves (as PP posted) and the "swing" type shape that just looks too big. I want a coat that hugs me and actually keeps me warm, thanks!

KitKat1985 · 23/10/2017 02:38

You'd think that for £850 they could afford to put full length sleeves on. Grin

Seriously OP to me it's a very typical looking coat so not sure I could justify the £850 spend, but if you really like it and can afford it then why not.

Italiangreyhound · 23/10/2017 02:39

Actually, OP I think this one is nicer.

I thought of this when you said "empress".

You could have a look at the outner if you fancy a bargainous high end alternative like this from Love Moschino.

A coat so beautiful, I'd feel embarrassed to be such an empress in it
coconutwater1 · 23/10/2017 04:52

I love the colour, I like red coats and still have a one bought in Munich for about £60, around 10 years ago.

But even-though Im on the short side as well, I feel its a little too short in both body and sleeve length for a winter coat, and really dont like the buttons at all think they cheapen the look. Love the funnel neck though, its the same as what I have on my red one (and a DKNY black and white coat) really like that style on coats.

But for the price Im surprised at the material composition, price is irrelevant if you like it and can afford it, its your money but I think its overpriced. If we all liked the same things it would be very boring....

Why no go and try it on an see how you feel in it?

Volontaire · 23/10/2017 04:58

Oh my.

That is a seriously ugly coat.

You know when John Lewis do that style, and call it - inspiringly - Janet that you’re into generic frump territory.

GrumpyOldFucker · 23/10/2017 06:34

I think if you really want it you should get it. I had similar lust 8 years ago for a black military ish Burberry cost that I tried on but couldn’t bring myself to buy for £650. Kept thinking about it and wishing I had gone ahead.

I bought a very similar one on eBay a couple of weeks ago for about £200 and I’m very very pleased with it.

coconutwater1 · 23/10/2017 06:34

TBF the Janet looks nothing like the red one

wetotter · 23/10/2017 06:43

What makes it special? Is it the draggly bit off the sleeve?

I don't think I'd spot it as an expensive item, because of the mucking round with sleeve embellishment (which I seriously dislike and think will date)

Nearlyadoctor · 23/10/2017 06:52

It's not my taste but I can see totally where the op is coming from. Go and try it at least then you'll know one way or the other. It doesn't matter whether it looks expensive it is what it is and if you can afford it and love it go for it.
I've been lusting over a Canada Goose Victoria Parka in plum again not everyone's taste at £775 - its arriving today so if I love it I'll keep it, if not back it'll go!

GourmetFishFinger · 23/10/2017 06:56

The color is gorgeous, but it was probably made in the same factory as primark clothing and "finished in Milan" (buttons we're handsewn by textiles students in Milan).

ShirleyPhallus · 23/10/2017 06:57

The Janet coat doesn't look anything like this one Confused

When did style and beauty get so mean?

fruitlovingmonkey · 23/10/2017 07:01

It's beautiful.
I'm a little suspicious of the fabric blend but I really dislike man made fibres. If that's not an issue then go for it.
You don't need to justify your spending as long as you can afford it.

WhyWouldYouThinkThat · 23/10/2017 07:03

When did style and beauty get so mean?

I know it's like baby names......

UnaPalomaBlanca · 23/10/2017 07:09

It’s quite nice but super expensive. I actually like the slightly short sleeve- looks elegant if you expose the wrist and also looks good with the sleeves underneath.
Not a fan of the funnel neck as they have styled it in the picture. Would look better standing up, not splayed out.
Is there an element of you liking it so much BECAUSE it’s expensive? The allure of the unobtainable/ out of reach?? Would you like it as much if it was £39.99 in Primark?

NotAgainYoda · 23/10/2017 07:10

It's a nice coat. But I'm not fashionista and I'm convinced that sort of coat could be got for under £200

But I have never spent £850 on any item of clothing

If I was in that league of spending maybe I might

The shops I go to; the money I spend are luxury to many people. It's all realtive

LegArmpits · 23/10/2017 07:19

You sound a bit like Anne of Green Gables talking about a puff-sleeved dress 😂

twattymctwatterson · 23/10/2017 07:19

It looks like a completely average red coat that costs the best part of a grand

ontherightpath · 23/10/2017 07:23

It's a beautiful coat so if you love it, it goes with most things in your wardrobe and the fit is right, then go for it. I have a burberry mac and max mara coats I been wearing for years, they're beautiful quality and are a joy to wear. I would be happy to invest in that coat too.

surferjet · 23/10/2017 07:31

Is the thread title a joke?
I clicked on expecting to see a beautiful £3000 Gucci or something, instead, I got a bog standard coat you see every day.
Sorry op. It’s nothing special.

Anatidae · 23/10/2017 07:33

I want this. It’s so so so so soft and warm.

It’s also 875 quid so I won’t be having it.

I may just go back and stroke it a bit

A coat so beautiful, I'd feel embarrassed to be such an empress in it
Anatidae · 23/10/2017 07:37

And op, that coat is lovely. If you wanted a cheaper version there is a pattern I’ve seen coming out soon for something similar (I’ll try to find it...) and you could check Fabric Godmother for wool coating - she often has ex designer (prada, missoni) wool and other fabrics.

If you can afford it and will love it and wear it and gain joy from it, then buy it

AppleKatie · 23/10/2017 07:39

You were going to spend £300 and then saw a nice one for £850 and thought why not?

OP it's a nice enough coat, but the sleeves would annoy me- imagine having to have long sleeves that 'go' underneath every time you put your coat on- I couldn't be arsed.

But nice enough coats can be bought for £100-£150, £850 is joke shop territory.

WillowWeeping · 23/10/2017 07:44

nettle I love that Gucci coat

WillowWeeping · 23/10/2017 07:46

There tends to be a huge difference between the quality of coats in the £50- £250 and the £250+ range.

The more you spend the more likely you'll get 100% wool or wool mixed with cashmere which tend to be better wearing and much warmer than cheaper alternatives.
