Doc Marten wearers, come gather and talk to me...

I live in skinny black jeans.

Why then has it taken me 33 years of life to consider a pair of DMs? My kids have stashed out that DMs are cool and have pairs and they’re only in primary school.

Are they comfy? Are they TTS? What colour shall I get? I’m torn between:

Brown leather (sensible)

White patent (less sensible but would go with everything).

Grey patent (ditto).

Hot pink or purple.

Is it worth the investment?

How are they for wide feet and high arches? DD wants some but always has trouble finding shoes that are comfortable.

gillybeanz · 21/10/2017 15:14

Mine are hurting my feet and have cut the back of my heels.
I thought I'd worn them in properly as they were fine at first, only developing problems now they're worn in.
I find them hard on the bottom of my feet as used to wearing soft insoles like pumps and trainers.
I'm not sure I'd buy anymore as I thought they'd be comfy.

ZepellinBend · 21/10/2017 15:28

They're good tor wide feet bitter, I have wide feet myself. She might need to try on for the arches, I know some people have problems with the seams along the top hurting. I wear high insoles with mine as I've flat feet and they're grand.

MikeUniformMike · 21/10/2017 15:31

try them on in a shop. They tend to be quite ample.

I had DMs with rainbow stitching in my student days. Now I have plain black Emmeline ones.

BitterLittlePoster · 21/10/2017 15:39

Thanks, we'll go try them on. I think I need some too

LaChatte · 21/10/2017 15:58

If your budget can stretch that far, I'd go for the made in England ones as they seem to be better quality. I have two "recent" (5 and 15 years) pairs made in China and one pair made in England from when I was a teenager (25 odd years ago), and the old ones are in way better shap than then new ones.

QueenofLouisiana · 21/10/2017 17:48

I have:
Purple boots
Floral flat sandals
Brown heeled Mary Janes
Black heeled shoes.

I live in them!

Racheyg · 21/10/2017 18:04

I have 4 pairs
Black patent 8 holes
Black patent 16 holes with heels
Black Chelsea boots with heels
Brown brogue Chelsea boots

Racheyg · 21/10/2017 18:05

Only the brown ones were comfy from the offset the rest I had to "break in"

EraArils · 21/10/2017 18:37

Bitter I have wide feet and high arches. I also wear orthopaedic inserts and I have absolutely no problems with wearing them with any of my DM's. In fact they are the perfect boot/shoe for the feet you described.

piknmixer · 21/10/2017 19:09

I bought some of the Kenton DMs with the buckle for £17 from TK Maxx a few months ago.

They are so uncomfortable I can't wear them. Not even with plasters and two pairs of socks Sad

Must persevere!

Hmmalittlefishy · 21/10/2017 19:22

I used to have black and a purple pair when I was a teenager. With lots of comments from my dad about clompy boots!
I've searched my parents house but no joy I must've got rid of them in my uni days of ridiculous high heels
Now I have a shuh advert on the bottom of this thread tempting me

MammyCon · 21/10/2017 19:32

I have a slight obsession! Mine are the sandals and glitter boots (junior size 3 with zip) I’m more than happy to buy from kids range when saves over £50 👌🏻
Daughter is 2 and it’s all she’s ever worn Blush

I have a couple (ok - maybe more than ten) pair. The past two years they have taken a backseat to trainers. I can’t wait for Fall to come and wear them again. (It’s Spring where I am)

NikiBabe · 21/10/2017 22:17

Is £65 a good price in the sale? Found a pair my size.

IamMoana · 21/10/2017 22:23

I don't own a pair (sob) however my daughter is on her third pair. I am yet to find a harder wearing shoe/boot for kids. She wears them with dresses and they suit her down to the ground. Wonder if I could pull off a pair too sometimes Wink

ilovecardigans · 21/10/2017 22:35

I have a pair of vintage 1460 black leather DM boots which I've had since uni (more than 30 years ago!). They are like a second skin and still look great.

Two years ago I bought a pair of black patent 1460 DM shoes for work and after ~18 months the right one split on both sides at the 'flex' point of the shoe. Bitterly disappointed in them and I will avoid patent DMs in future.

fancyKnickers · 22/10/2017 07:38

puppydogmummy Is cherry red same as oxblood?

According to DH, who fancies himself as a DM expert(!), originally they only did cherry red and black. Skinheads used to buy the cherry ones and put black boot polish on them which gave the oxblood look. Now they make them like that.

MikeUniformMike · 22/10/2017 13:55

£65 good value? Depends on the style.

Packergator · 22/10/2017 14:03

My absolute faves are the Aimilie boots with the ribbon laces. I’m pushing 6ft and am a ‘big unit’ so would look super butch in regular DMs. The styling and ribbons soften them up a bit. They’re also a flattering length. The Aimilies don’t need much breaking in at all I’ve found; ready to wear out the box! Maybe it’s because they’re a softer leather?

BitterLittlePoster · 22/10/2017 17:30

Thanks EraArils. That's good to hear, it's really tough to find shoes for those kind of feet, isn't it? I'm going to make dd try some on. She needs something more substantial for winter.

PurpleDaisies · 22/10/2017 17:31

What style did you find for £65 mike?

PurpleDaisies · 22/10/2017 17:32

Sorry, I mean niki. Blush
