Doc Marten wearers, come gather and talk to me...

I live in skinny black jeans.

Why then has it taken me 33 years of life to consider a pair of DMs? My kids have stashed out that DMs are cool and have pairs and they’re only in primary school.

Are they comfy? Are they TTS? What colour shall I get? I’m torn between:

Brown leather (sensible)

White patent (less sensible but would go with everything).

Grey patent (ditto).

Hot pink or purple.

Is it worth the investment?

I have cherry reds (am 44). I wore a black pair pretty much every single day from the age of 17-21. Many of my colleagues wear them - all colours, all prints, all ages!

I love them, so comfy once they're broken in. I am quite fierce with my breaking-in and I'm sure an aficionado would be horrified but I basically stamp on the heels Blush. Thick socks are a must as well.

Nothing beats a pair of DMs.

AngelaTwerkel · 20/10/2017 12:03

I'm on my first day of DM cherry red boots today! They feel very stiff, hoping they will ease up a bit.

Had a pair from age 16 to 24, hope these are as durable.

FlyingGoose · 20/10/2017 12:16

These are my current pair, I love them and will be buying another pair soon 😀

I have three pairs. A pewter mid calf pair with a flowery inside (you can fold them down) with ribbon laces.
A brown pair (as above but with cream fur lining)

And a pastel pink pair of pascal boots that were actually my wedding shoes. They’re so comfy!

toboldlygo · 20/10/2017 14:07

Can I ask how everyone wears them with skinny jeans? Do you roll up (showing top of socks, can't wear them without my padded socks) or tuck them in?

MrsLogicFromViz · 20/10/2017 14:14

I have quite a few pairs, my favourite my side zip 14 hole boots. So cool - I'm a 9/43 and I can get women's ones.

MrsLogicFromViz · 20/10/2017 14:16

There's also a mid-season sale on at the moment on the official DM site.

NC4now · 20/10/2017 14:21

Breaking in a pair of DMs is a rite of passage. Like childbirth, you forget the pain when you fall in love with them.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 20/10/2017 14:24

Niki I do! The Noelle ones. They are incredibly comfortable and I haven't had to break them in at all. They come with two sets of insoles too...one set is furry, I can't wait until winter!

DS (10) has just got his first pair of DMs - black shoes for school. He LOVES them and wants some Chelsea boot style now but I've told him to wait until his feet stop growing!

PNGirl · 20/10/2017 14:35

Tucked in for me, but they have to be skinny all the way to the ankle. None of this loose-calf masquerading-as-skinny-but-really-straight business.

explodingkittens · 20/10/2017 15:22

I'm very tempted by a gold pair currently on ebay...

IdentityRequest1 · 20/10/2017 16:18

I wear skinnies tucked into thick boot-socks, so you can see the tops of the socks out of the boot. If that makes sense...

IdentityRequest1 · 20/10/2017 16:22

Last year I wanted the Pascal Virginia stingray, but couldn't afford... they are 'the one that got away' for me...

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 20/10/2017 16:56

These are my current favourites. Slightly ridiculous but I love them.

And these are the ones that everyone comments on. I've had mine a few years and they still look great.

I have a pair of brown Doc Marten chelsea boots and they are by far and away the best boots I've ever had. Take a bit of wearing in but so, so comfortable now and exceptionally hard wearing.

(And even better, I got them brand new in the box in Oxfam for £15).

TheRattleBag · 20/10/2017 17:08

I have fifteen pairs Blush of varying design. I'm slightly embarrassed by this sometimes, but they're just about all I ever wear. (And the count leapt by three in one go when I visited the factory shop over the Black Friday weekend last year. Well, with 25% off how could I be expected to resist?)

The easiest to break in were my Serena boots in black and brown - they were comfortable virtually immediately, so are good ones to start with.

Current favourites are my silver shoes which also come in a boot version. Or it might be my red and white heart patterned brogues....... or my purple boots...... or my willow pattern shoes. It's just too hard to narrow it down!

I've got the cherry red Emmeline docs at the moment, they're amazing, I live in them. So comfy and they go with everything!
Probably going to buy a pair of classic black ones too Smile

My only tips for breaking them in are stock up on cushioned plasters and wear two pairs of socks with them to begin with. Takes me about a week or two and then after that they're fine

Jellyheadbang · 20/10/2017 17:17

I'm 45 , I have about five pairs of dms, shoes and boots.
one pair I've had since my teens. I love them I have disability and they're the most comfy and supportive plus I think v stylish.
I receive compliments everywhere I go although some people complain that they're not feminine I love them 😍

Jellyheadbang · 20/10/2017 18:03

Just learned on here about about willow patterned dms. Be still my beating heart!

Luckyme2 · 20/10/2017 18:06

My 13 year old DD had a cherry red pair for Christmas last year and is no delighted that the season has changed and she can wear them again. Luckily they still fit. I am quite envious as they look Fab on her!

WeeMadArthur · 20/10/2017 18:13

Has anyone had the Telkes ones? I think the cherry red ones are gorgeous. How hard are they to wear in, new shoes always shred my feet. They are reduced to £80 right now

MrsDOnofrio · 20/10/2017 18:41

I’m 49 and have several pairs:

1460’s in purple and bright, bright red
1461’s in white patent and black patent
Flora Chelsea boots in cherry red
A pair of brown motorbike style ones that have yet to be worn because I’m not quite sure how to wear them
Currently eyeing up the silver 1460’s

Only had slight difficulties in breaking in the black 1461’s and the red 1460’s. Chelsea boots fitted like a dream from day one

TarquinGyrfalcon · 20/10/2017 18:41

Can I recommend the Doc Sock. Made by DM with extra padding. I wasn’t sure if they were a gimmick but I have new DMS and the socks is making breaking them in a doddle. Wore different socks one day and I was in agony.
