Doc Marten wearers, come gather and talk to me...

I live in skinny black jeans.

Why then has it taken me 33 years of life to consider a pair of DMs? My kids have stashed out that DMs are cool and have pairs and they’re only in primary school.

Are they comfy? Are they TTS? What colour shall I get? I’m torn between:

Brown leather (sensible)

White patent (less sensible but would go with everything).

Grey patent (ditto).

Hot pink or purple.

Is it worth the investment?

I'm a 45 year old teacher and I wear docs to work every day. I have black shoes, cherry mary-janes and long and ankle pull ons.

I also have pale blue 8 holed ones which I wear at the weekend. I also have 2 pairs of sandals.

My fave shoes since I was a teen.

MiniTheMinx · 20/10/2017 19:39

We all wear them. As a family we look like a bunch of anarchists on a demo!

I've got three pairs, a classic black pair, and a silver pair. My favourites are really soft leather with a low wedge sole, they look really heavy. I actually toned my legs wearing them because they are heavy.i want to buy another pair. Not sure which design they are and can't find them anywhere now.

I want some cherry red but they need to be soft leather without the seam at the ankle.

insancerre · 20/10/2017 19:45

Dd now wears a pair of blue suede dms that dh bought me when she was a baby
She is now 21
So, yes, they do last

Fiona1984 · 20/10/2017 20:30

I have a pair or the 14 hole amilitia DMs. Love them, I find them very comfy and didn't need to break them in. But they are slightly big so I always wear hiking socks anyhow.
I've only not worn them much lately because my car pedals are pretty cramped and the DMs make my already huge size 7 feet even bigger!

JeremyCorbynsBeard · 20/10/2017 20:34

We too are a family of DM wearers. DH has 17 pairs. Mind you, he is very, very old.

I have the Vonda ones (red roses embroidered on) which I love, black traditional ones, black Maryjane shoes and tan pull on boots (which look nothing like normal DMs). DD has grey, fur-lined ones and also the cherry red patent.

They will last you a lifetime.

Fiona1984 · 20/10/2017 20:41

I really want the Vonda ones! I can't justify £140 on another pair of boots though, and not sure what I can wear them with.
I have a lovely pair of Fly boots which always get mistaken for DMs.

puppydogmummy · 20/10/2017 21:33

Is cherry red same as oxblood?

NikiBabe · 20/10/2017 22:10

I was thinking of the youth range as they go up to adult size 5.

But the eyelet boots have zips up the side ffs.

Grimmfebruary · 20/10/2017 22:11

I've had my calf length ones since I was 17, cost 120 quid and have survived 9 winters. Comfiest boots ever.

Hobbes8 · 20/10/2017 23:29

puppydog I think oxblood is a darker burgundy.

BillWagglestaff · 20/10/2017 23:37

I love DMs and am looking to get a new pair. Can’t decide between the beautiful new William Blake ones and a pair of classic brown Chelsea ones. What do I do?!

NikiBabe · 21/10/2017 00:35

Does anyone know any good sale / outlets to get them from?

BradleyPooper · 21/10/2017 03:05

Love DMs, have had various pairs over 25 years. My 8 yo has a pink glitter pair and my 12 yo has red patent and grey sparkly. They last so well, kids sizes are often reduced and have great resale value when they grow out of them.

63 and checking in here. I've been wearing the Docs for years, and mourn the fact that astounding prices still only get some (literally) lightweight stuff these days.

My faves are black glace leather lace-ups for work. Had them for twenty years now.

PurpleDaisies · 21/10/2017 09:24

I'm currently choosing a pair. I haven't had them since I was in school and I'm so excited.

Does anyone know if the youth size 5 is the same as an adult size 5?

fairyofallthings · 21/10/2017 09:26

I always wear DM shoes, they are so comfy and last for years. Do it.

TatterdemalionAspie · 21/10/2017 09:58

I took DD to the Camden store in the hope of finally finding shoes that fit her oddly shaped feet. She didn't like the feel of them, but I ended up getting a pair of their 'For Life' boots - they will repair or replace the boots for the rest of your life Shock - for myself. They were more expensive than the standard Docs (they retail at £195) but the leather is better quality and they're made on the 'comfort' last, so are extra wide. I tried on various styles, but none of them felt remotely as comfortable as the 'for life' ones. After a lot of trying on and haggling, I got a 20% discount so paid £156. That's a lot of money to me, but I figure they'll last me for the rest of my life and they're such a comfortable, durable boot.

They didn't take any of the wearing in I remember from wearing Docs years ago - I wore an extra pair of socks and they were comfy from the very first wear. They came with a pot of the Wonder Balsam and a little sponge, which is fantastic at softening the leather and keeping it supple. I've worn them every day for the past few months and they still look brand new. I ❤️❤️❤️ them!

Docs for life

CountFosco · 21/10/2017 11:55

I've got purple 8 holes. Be warned, they inspire such love that you will regularly get other women telling you they love them.

IdentityRequest1 · 21/10/2017 12:12

My kid has some gold glitter ones, and I'm so jealous! My next pair will be something outlandish...

NikiBabe · 21/10/2017 13:05

I think the youth dms are the same. A 38 is a 38.

But the youth sizes have inside zips.

ZepellinBend · 21/10/2017 13:11

Mine last approximately two years max Confused Really jealous of those of you that have them a long time. I am exceptionally hard on my feet and walk everywhere being a non driver. Still love em though, especially the Triumphs. My podiatrist says they are good for feet being flat, thick soled and lace up for support.

NikiBabe · 21/10/2017 14:29

Youth 4 & 5 are definitely adult 37 & 38. I looked in a shop today.

Youth sizes are £50 cheaper. However the zip.....does is look crappy?

PNGirl · 21/10/2017 15:00

I'm not keen on any of the current glitter ones with zips as I think they are expensive for non-leather!

NikiBabe · 21/10/2017 15:10

They have leather too.
