I'm trying the boot/dress combo for the first time and thought I'd got it in the shop but I haven't have I?
I'm short with stumpy legs and boots which are too tall or fussy make me look squat. So I thought plain low wedges with leggings but I dunno.
The dress is going back. It looked good in the shop but it doesn't now. Don't you hate it when that happens?!
Any suggestions? I want something different to knee high boots.

The boots come to just above my ankle bone.

You need a good gap around the ankle with boots like that, they look too tight to the ankle. The dress is a bit boxy for you.

You need a slightly lower denier tights. And a plain, not print dress.
The look is completely fine and suits you.
It is the dress not you!

I think a black background with the print would have helped. Matched with the black tights and boots it would create less of a top vs bottom look.

Basically the look is fine on you IMO. Just needs a tweak to the dress.

I like the print. Keep the dress. Plain fabric would make this look drab. I like the way the fabric drapes and the big bold pattern on that lovely green. I agree that brown boots and only semi-opaque tights would give it a lift. Maybe even beige boots. Something a bit more funky around the feet and leg area. All in all though I like the whole ensemble.

Offthread, you can't see it on the pic but I can get a finger down between my ankle and the boot. I think that's OK?
The main problem with the dress is that I don't actually have a tummy! Bum yes but my tummy is fairly flat (although untoned). I think you're right about it being boxy.
Pickledonian what colour tights/leggings with brown boots though? Brown tights look odd but wouldn't colour blocking make my legs look awful?

I think a slightly more sheer tight would look better. There is nothing wrong with your legs, or your legs in those boots. The dress is possibly too boxy, and the neckline a little matronly on you, it hides your shape rather than enhance the good bits.

I feel a bit tarty with tights and ankle boots. I've never seen anyone else and thought that though.

Where could I get some reasonably priced chelsea boots? I'm a size 5 but the ones I tried on today looked really clumpy.

I like the dress on you but think you should go for velvet opaques maybe say a 70 denier same effect as leggings eg coverage but smoother lines and look.

Have you tried a slightly longer dress? Something a bit softer/swishier that doesn't hold its shape the way this one does? I don't think the length is doing you any favours, but a few inches longer would be much more flattering.

The slightly A-line shape of skirt is making you look a bit cartoonish when it almost looks really stylish but just falls short. I think you could look awesome, with a few tweaks to the outfit.

I like the boots. I think the dress print is nice, but a dress with a fuller skirt and a waist might suit you better. Also if you have thicker legs (I'm taller, but pear shaped and have big legs) a knee-length dress often looks more put together and for me, makes me feel more confident and comfortable. this type of shape

Also I like this look with a little cardie on top, which also means you can wear a sleeveless dress which are easier to find.

I am also short and stumpy. I would try a swishier dress and stick with one colour for everything.

I think the dress because of its contrasting colour to your tights cuts your legs off and makes them look shorter.
I would go for more knee high boots or ankle boots with same colour trousers and top.

Yes, definately tights and not leggings. Tights give a much more smoother/sleeker look.
I think maybe the boots are too tight at the ankle, maybe more of a gape would look better. I would maybe put tan boots with that dress. If you're taking the dress back though, you need to see what colour boots most of your clothes go with.
