This isn't a good look is it?

Ignore the decorating mess please.
I'm trying the boot/dress combo for the first time and thought I'd got it in the shop but I haven't have I?
I'm short with stumpy legs and boots which are too tall or fussy make me look squat. So I thought plain low wedges with leggings but I dunno.
The dress is going back. It looked good in the shop but it doesn't now. Don't you hate it when that happens?!
Any suggestions? I want something different to knee high boots.

You are a similar shape to me. The dress is too short, and the ankle boots immediately shorten your legs.

I think a knee length boot would look better. Marks & Spencers have a nice flat suede boot here

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/10/2017 17:13

The dress is definitely not too short, but it might be a bit too A-line maybe.

WelshMumof1 · 14/10/2017 17:16

Personally I don't like the fit on the dress. I don't think it's a flattering shape. It's like a square sack. I'm not a fan of that, although some people do like it obviously. I like the boots a lot actually but you have a nice figure and I would pick a dress shape that compliments it a little more. Something with a waist line maybe. If you do stick with the dress I would go for a brown or beige boot.

But we're all saying different things so I guess it goes to show fashion is quite different. You need to wear it with confidence whatever it is and you're clearly not sold on this outfit.

yumyumpoppycat · 14/10/2017 17:16

Think the second dress is lovely on you.

ShoesHaveSouls · 14/10/2017 17:16

OP, I just wanted to say that you look like a different person in the second dress! Much taller and slimmer. Isn't it amazing what a dress-shape can do??

FizzyGreenWater · 14/10/2017 17:18

You look half the size in the second dress, which is lovely and REALLY suits that tights/boots look (slightly retro).

Black tights ALWAYS. I'd go opaque and maybe even woolly.

Agree that you need different boots, ankle yes, possibly brown, but mainly something with just a bit more ZIP. Maybe fly london type, this kind of thing?

*don’t have defined heel

endehors · 14/10/2017 17:34

Second dress style better with those boots. Longer, flat boots with first dress.

NapQueen · 14/10/2017 17:35

That second dress is beautiful! Where is it from?

lasttimeround · 14/10/2017 17:39

I think the first dress is too tight - it's catching round the hips I think. It's generous around the top half which is a bit confusing. I love the dress itself - I have similar and will imitate the coloured tights with it. I've worn with dark tights and beeb a bit unhappy with result. Second dress shape is better on you. Lovely dress too.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 14/10/2017 18:29

It's the boots that are the problem, they are cutting your legs off and making your legs look dumpy.

The green dress goes brilliantly with the purple tights!

The boots just look wrong with everything, they don't flatter you at all.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/10/2017 18:36

No, no, no to purple tights!

And to the battered brown boots too. I like battered brown boots in general, but the Op looks as if she's trying to dress up a bit.

StorminaBcup · 14/10/2017 18:45

I’ve just looked the picture with the purple tights and I don’t like the dress on you OP. It’s not a flattering length and it doesn’t show off your lovely waist.

picklemepopcorn · 14/10/2017 19:01

I .think if you were moving, it would look great! It's because you are square on to the camera.

Olddear · 14/10/2017 19:18

I think it's the boots. I think you'd be better with more of a shoe boot. I think the ones you are wearing make your legs look quite stumpy (sorry!!!) whereas a shoe boot would elongate your legs.

CountFosco · 14/10/2017 20:27

Think you have a nice figure, what height are you? I'm 5'2" and think you look shorter than me? Which means even a petite dress might be too long. I'm also guessing you're tiny, no more than a size 10 but probably an 8?

I think the green dress is lovely but the body is too long on you, you've got that oh so familiar to me ruck at the back because the waist in the dress is below your natural waist and that then makes your tummy look worse than it is. I also think the length might not be the best on you, you'd either look better with a tiny mini halfway up your thighs or something just below your knee hitting you precisely at the slimmest part of your leg (I'd pay to have dresses and skirts cropped to that length), that's why the other dress makes your legs look slimmer.

Agree with PPs that tights look better than leggings with a knee length dress, since you are short I'd at least wear tights that are the same colour as your boots but preferably wear only one colour from head to toe (boring as hell to do that all the time though and not advice I always follow!).

I'm not keen on the wedge boots for the same reason as Remus, they look a bit hoof like. They are perfectly flattering though so if you like them keep them. I love a Chelsea boot with a skirt and they'd probably be a bit wider round the ankle which might be more flattering, having said that, for me something that show off my ankle like a brogues is even better (I have big calves but tiny ankles) so some experimentation is required. Use your most flattering shoes to identify a dress then use your most flattering dress to identify a pair of shoes.

SP00KYLilBucket1 · 14/10/2017 20:30

How about a black legging, with a light brown boot and the same colour belt to go around the middle?

NotAgainYoda · 14/10/2017 20:51

SPOOKY

Well one boot and one leg is going to look plain daft

OutComeTheWolves · 14/10/2017 21:05

That green dress is gorgeous. Where is it from op?

Jojobythesea · 14/10/2017 21:22

100 denier black tights from M and S and ankle boots that are looser around the ankle thus making the leg look slimmer. Ankle boots are very flattering I think with dresses and wedge heel ones especially.

NashvilleQueen · 14/10/2017 21:31

I know this sounds silly but I get a bit funny when there's too much black (opaque tights and black boots) on the lower half. I think it's weather related! Not that cold yet.

Dress and tights are fine. I think it would be better with flat boots of a different colour. Either tan or something which references the colours in the dress.

NashvilleQueen · 14/10/2017 21:32

Agree not wedges.

EnidButton · 15/10/2017 02:24

It is cold in Northern England Nashville. Guessing it's also cold in Scotland. No idea where the OP is mind you but just because it's mild in some parts of Britain, doesn't mean it's the same everywhere.

EnidButton · 15/10/2017 02:25

Didn't mean that to sound arsey sorry. Grin

Floisme · 15/10/2017 10:00

This is why I have given up on dresses. Bollocks are they easy to wear - they never fit properly. I think Count and other posters have nailed the reasons better than I can but basically it looks like there's too much fabric in the wrong places and the proportions don't look right. It's not you, it's the dress.

That said, I really like the colours but I think the black tights / leggings are too harsh and they overwhelm it. I'd try with something like grey.

I can't see the boots very well but they look fine.
