Soap instead of shower gel

Just wanted to say that based on a thread I read on here probably a few months ago, I swapped my shower gel for soap (I think the original thread was about deodorant, as OP felt a bit whiffy not long after showering, but lots of people recommended switching shower gel for soap instead).
Anyway, the difference is remarkable! I went to a stupidly hot soft play with DS at the weekend, where I had to follow him round the bloody playframe for an hour, (which is a whole other thread!), and still felt pretty fresh that evening, which I never would have been before. Same for the mornings, I usually wake up feeling a bit stinky because I seem to get very hot overnight, but no more! I'm just using Simple soap bars, two for £1. Amazing!

Oh, we didn't worry about mildness! Grin

I’ve been using Pears for a few weeks now. Being less smelly has done wonders for my general well-being.
I’m in Canada and I’m lucky enough to be visiting a small town in the Rockies with its own soap company. And they cure it for 8 weeks before it hits the shelves!

I miss the old formula Pears soap. Anyone remember the Pears girl on the back of the packets?

Mrsmomo · 08/10/2017 10:27

I've been reading since the original post and also found that switching to soap made a big difference. This thread has been very interesting and I've been looking at some of the suggestions. I've seen a l'occitane verbena liquid soap (love the smell) and wondered if anyone has tried it or uses it. BTW thanks to the OP and OOP :)

Semiskimmed · 08/10/2017 10:30

I use lush soaps when I can afford them, and dove usually. I use them to clean, then use a bit of shower gel or shower oil to smell nice.
Tk maxx have fabulous soaps, I had a lovely Italian one that smelt of oranges. It was beautiful.

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/10/2017 10:40

Mrsmomo I've used the L'Occitane verbena liquid soap. It smells heavenly but is very expensive. I much prefer the bar soap which smells just as gorgeous (perfumes the whole bathroom), lasts forever and is much much cheaper. I get the 250g size - lasts me for months!

Thanks BoreOF, it is pricey. I'm thinking of it as something to buy as a special treat or who knows, if I add it to my amazon wish list my DH might spy it in the run up to Christmas..........

AuntyElle · 08/10/2017 11:46

Love this whole Back to Soap movement.
Shower gel was total marketing rubbish wasn't it? It would have never occurred to me to use soap in the shower or that it was more effective.
Last Christmas TK Maxx had French/Italian soaps in pretty boxes, edged with glitter and some of them incorporated music boxes!!! I hope they get them in again.
Another Christmassy option:

Reading this thread has reminded me of some lovely Claus Porto soap I had from Portugal - really tempted to order some as a treat (even though I've got 6 bars of Nesti Dante in the bathroom cupboard)

Just washed my hair with soap and it looks clean and very smooth and shiny - I have wavy/prone to a bit of frizz hair but there is no sign of frizz, my hair looks incredible - as good as it looks after a visit to the hairdresser - I'm definitely going to use soap on my hair again!

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/10/2017 16:40

I only wash my hair once a week using the Superdrug shampoo dye, I co-wash in between and my hair is much better for it.
I've given up finding face creams/eye creams/plumpers/refiners etc too.
I use astral moisturister all over, and that's it, I thin it down a little for my face, and once a week gently scrub with a wash mit.

starzig · 08/10/2017 16:45

TK MAXX do lovely soaps

yeahrightwhatever · 08/10/2017 18:29

Moose, have you come across Upper Canada soap? Got some a year or so ago in Boundary Mill and it's gorgeous but can't find it since.

FiveShelties · 08/10/2017 18:37

I just called into the supermarket and somehow a GREEN Pears soap leapt into the trolley. Green Pears ---- when did that happen? Of course, the last thing in the world I need is another bar of soap!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 08/10/2017 19:46

yeahright No, I haven’t but I’ll keep an eye out for it. Mine is Rocky Mountain Soap Company. I bought some blood orange and a seaweed and spearmint this morning :)

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 08/10/2017 20:30

Apparently my grandma used to wash her hair in sunlight soap-she had brilliant White hair without a hint of yellow.
What product was that Brillo? I don't wash mine too often, but always looking for something.
I've just put my stinky hard working ds on to soap. Thing is the one in the bathroom is my beloved Savon Marseilles, I'll get him some Waitrose out.

arrrrghhwinehelpswithteens · 09/10/2017 14:15

I use carbolic soap instead of spray cleaners in the kitchen (they trigger my asthma) & it always seems cleaner. I have some Lush in the bathroom & now I think about it I do feel better when I use soap (skin feels cleaner somehow?!) so I think I'll try this!

fairyofallthings · 09/10/2017 14:17

Soap is so much cheaper too, though I've discovered that one bottle of shower gel now lasts three times as long now that there is one less person in the house. I'm not sure if that is because DC#1 used too much or that DC#2 doesn't use enough! Grin

fairyofallthings · 09/10/2017 14:18

@orangeplastic what soap did you use to wash your hair?

Kaykee · 09/10/2017 14:26

I love a nice smelling shower gel but wouldn't have ever used it on my armpits or anywhere sensitive due to fragrance so also use mild baby soap, always have. But might look into some of these nice soaps in place of my shower gel. Save some space in the shower too I can imagine.

megletthesecond · 09/10/2017 14:29

appu I'm using the Lush Gardeners soap. Bergamot and clary sage. It's slightly herby.

CoolCarrie · 09/10/2017 14:42

Same here, Timmytoo, they are fab and last for ages. They cost about R55 here in Woolworths, which is our version of M & S, and in Dischem.

Scabbersley · 09/10/2017 14:44

The Dr bronner soaps are amazing.

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/10/2017 14:47

Oh, I love this thread! No sniping, just lots of lovely soapiness Smile

CoolCarrie · 09/10/2017 14:49

High, hot and a helluva lot, sounds like a cool user name!
