Soap instead of shower gel

Firstaidnovice · 04/10/2017 08:02

Just wanted to say that based on a thread I read on here probably a few months ago, I swapped my shower gel for soap (I think the original thread was about deodorant, as OP felt a bit whiffy not long after showering, but lots of people recommended switching shower gel for soap instead).
Anyway, the difference is remarkable! I went to a stupidly hot soft play with DS at the weekend, where I had to follow him round the bloody playframe for an hour, (which is a whole other thread!), and still felt pretty fresh that evening, which I never would have been before. Same for the mornings, I usually wake up feeling a bit stinky because I seem to get very hot overnight, but no more! I'm just using Simple soap bars, two for £1. Amazing!

Probably already been suggested, but Lush has lots of soap! (And shampoo bars - these last ages, longer than a bottle of shampoo)

TheLegendOfBeans · 09/10/2017 14:53

Not RTFT but is Lush soap any good? I'm a sweaty beast and in the process of running down my shower gel before I treat myself to a nice soap.

I'm a bit obsessed with bath bombs so any suggestions re soaps will allow me to buy loads carefully select a winner

I went back to soap a while ago after using L'Occitane shower cream, the one I used was discontinued. Their soap isn't anything special so have used the ones from TKMaxx. I was finding that shower cream didn't remove sweat niff from pits and I have never in my life had smelly pits until the last year or so.

I have recently bought a 4 pack of Knights Castille (think it was in Waitrose) and it does the job but is not the same as in the old days, when Camay only came in pink (before the days of Shield). I also keep Simple Soap in the house as am not keen on perfumes.

DiegoMadonna · 09/10/2017 14:56

I swapped a couple of years ago for financial reasons (shower gel is ridiculously priced and unnecessary) and I have to admit I never noticed any difference in cleanliness/freshness. Definitely saves me money though.

Branleuse · 09/10/2017 14:59

i feel greasy and itchy afteer shower gel. Soap feels much cleaner

MrsHathaway · 09/10/2017 15:00

I've been a soap user forever - though the occasional dabble with Dove which was rather unsatisfactory, and now I know why. I have terrible dry, sensitive skin and the perfumes in shower gel shred me.

Soap is also fantastic for shaving legs/armpits etc so you can also stop buying shaving foam.

I mainly get mine from DH's many trips away with work. A hotel bar lasts weeks and he gets one a day when he's away. The trip he's currently on is a year's worth of soap.

alizondevice · 09/10/2017 15:01

When I switched to soap a few years ago, I noticed a build up on soap scum in the washbasin and tub that took quite a bit of effort to clean. I'm embarrassed to say I finally gave up and went back to liquid soap and shower gel because I didn't want to spend all my time scrubbing away soap scum. Blush

Have of you experiences this? Is there bar soap that doesn't go gross and gooey and leave soap scum residue?

Orangeplastic · 09/10/2017 15:01

Fairy this apparently Waitrose only use sustainable palm oil in their products.

Going to try this one today. Bought to wean dh away from Head and Shoulders.

I'm definitely going to start making my own soaps though - just gathering the info and the ingredients.

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/10/2017 15:01

High, hot and a helluva lot, sounds like a cool user name! Grin

alizondevice · 09/10/2017 15:03

Also, how do you keep communal soap from getting hairy? My husband sheds in the shower. Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/10/2017 15:04

alizondevice try vinegar in a spray bottle to shift soap scum (usually it's because of hard water)

MysticMugBug · 09/10/2017 15:05

IMO knights castile smells like dead whale Grin
My dad buys it out of cheapness but I can't handle it myself.
I mainly use boots baby head to toe wash and either Cussons Pearl bar soap or one from Lush under my pits.
I think I'd find soap anywhere else on my body too drying.

JemimaLovesHamble · 09/10/2017 15:11

I love Crabtree and Evelyn Jojoba soap, but found it quite drying. Maybe for armpits and bits and feet that may not be the worst thing though...

PurplePillowCase · 09/10/2017 15:16

hairy soaps: teach him to make a lather with his hands or a flannel.

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/10/2017 15:22

Or give him his own soap

Auldspinster · 09/10/2017 15:30

I've been using wrights coal tar soap and have felt more fragrant for it. I love Dr Bronners peppermint soap but it is a little too bracing round the sensitive parts!

AlistairSim · 09/10/2017 15:37

I've been a soap user forever, nothing feels as good as a brand new bar!

I used to use baby wash on my children but they both had dry patches, my mum suggested trying soap and it cleared up within a week and has never come back.

I recommend Parrot soap, it's from Thailand but available on Amazon and comes in loads of different types and has fabulous retro packaging.

theftbyfinding · 09/10/2017 15:40

How interesting to read this thread because I treated myself to a bar of this diptyque soap last month and noticed I felt cleaner and fresher than when I used shower gel. It's expensive but a huge 200g bar and lasts so well. www.spacenk.com/uk/en_GB/bath-body/body-cleanser/handwash/34-blvd-st.germain-soap-MUK200007214.html

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 09/10/2017 15:41

jemima try Dr Bronner almond - it foams brilliantly and doesn't seem the least bit drying!

RavenLG · 09/10/2017 15:48

I told my other half about this thread as he always complains he stinks. He bought a soap (no idea what one, he said it was in an orange packed and looked "manly" [eyeroll]). It smells like a bloody pet shop! [gagface]

I need to get him a decent one asap!

Islacornx · 09/10/2017 15:56

Just read the full thread and I’m already converted, definitely going to buy some soap tonight!! Grin

ReginaBlitzkreig · 09/10/2017 15:58

I can't use soap every day (too drying) so I alternate with Seba Med soap free olive oil cleanser, which is very nice. It lasts ages as you don't need much.

Orangeplastic · 09/10/2017 16:14

Interesting Regina the Seba med you are using contains SLSs which are implicated in lots of dry skin conditions - I know they make my eczema much worse and are used in most liquid washes.

You can get moisturising soap bars - they contain more oil.

ReginaBlitzkreig · 09/10/2017 16:24

Does it now!
I foolishly assumed it wouldn't, so hadn't checked the labelling- I do avoid SLSs. That may explain why my skin has been so dry of late. Thank you Orange, I will switch to something SLS free.

onlyonaTuesday · 09/10/2017 16:39

I’m loving the shield soap I bought last week.
It lathers beautifully and smells so clean.
I am also writing a list of recommendations of this thread for my Christmas presents
