I think we've all benefited from society's move away from cigarettes. Saying that, I do find the smell of cigarettes nostalgic and cosy.

Good article find there Green - and it's bang up to date with Gabrielle I see! Although bit confused by No 8 - is that what Gabrielle is called or is that a previous incarnation ?

BluebellGal · 02/10/2017 18:25

Doh - it's Chanel No 5 Blush

BluebellGal · 02/10/2017 18:30

Btw what do you lot think about e-cigarettes? I find them overly sweet and synthetic. Better than cigarettes or dope I suppose, but on my daily walk abouts I smell more e-clouds than perfume! I know it's about the taste for users, but why can't the smell be better?

GreenPolishToGo · 02/10/2017 18:32

Just confusing coincidence Bluebell. Evil Under the Sun was published in 1941 and the blogger reckons the scent Hercule Poirot recognises as Gabrielle No 8 is really Christie's way of referring to Chanel No 5 without actually naming it - by changing the number and using Chanel's real first name instead of her surname. Now that there really is a Gabrielle perfume it's going to be very muddling for readers.

GreenPolishToGo · 02/10/2017 18:38

X-posted!

It was hard enough to give up real cigarettes. I wouldn't dare risk acquiring a vaping addiction. I know e-cigarettes are said not to be so damaging but I think only time can really tell. Anyway I couldn't afford to vape and be a scent junkie!

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 02/10/2017 19:50

Wowzer. Old ladies indeed Shock Give me the helpful chit chat here any day.

The other one has got me interested in Fancy Nights though. Had a quick look on Amazon (honestly, have sold my sole to that website, dash buttons and everything. One day I'll visit their warehouse and have them engrave my name on something Grin) but the price didn't seem that good. Might have to find the time to visit an actual real shop...

Thanks for kind words for DS2... faffery with nursery aside he's doing well. He even let me do this evening's puffs without crying/thrashing. The penny might have dropped that life's a bit better when you don't have to work so hard to just breath...

SOTD was Rome 1963. I should probably have gone for something a bit fresher to help blow the cobwebs away after a long weekend but it suited my mood today.

Judydreamsofhorses · 02/10/2017 19:55

SOTD was L'Air de Rien again. My on/off cold is very much on today and I feel rubbish. Annoyingly my MMM Fireplace came today and no-one was in to sign for it so it's languishing at some depot.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 02/10/2017 20:15

My sample of Lentheric Panache arrived today. Wow! Took me right back to my mum's dressing table. This really does feel like a grown-up scent - I suspect because I associate it with my mother. Have to say that it is really rather lovely...the dry down is a powdery musk with just the hint of something floral.

OCSockOrphanage · 02/10/2017 20:37

Marvellous research there, Green, and a great little story but as you say confusing for young readers who go looking for Gabrielle No 8. How likely is Gabrielle to be on sale in 50 years? I haven't tried it, so it would have to be no comment.

Delighted the inhaler use is getting some buy in. It must be awful for him.

OCSockOrphanage · 02/10/2017 20:39

Last remark was obviously for Cheap.

explodingkittens · 02/10/2017 21:02

Has anyone ever tried Nuit de Longchamp? I'm eyeing up a sample on Roullier White (I know, I know) and it sounds like it might be right up my street but I've never even heard of it.

MrsMacNally · 03/10/2017 00:20

What a sad thread .

Might give Youth Dew a whirl tomorrow; it's dark and cold. Although Cheap is making me want to try Rome 1963 again, and all this smoking talk is drawing me to Cabochard. (Anyone wear Habanita?).

SotD has been Amber Extreme. And SotN has been Haute Voltige (metallic peony and pomegranate). Is it me or is peony having a bit of a moment?

Pest - that Notino link was lethal. Have just trawled through 137 pages of samples (think I may be developing an RSI as a consequence). There are several cheap but interesting 5 mls which look good for advent calendars...and the Bond No.9 sample set is winking at me.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 03/10/2017 08:04

Oh my lord, how many pages of samples? Shock mustnotlook mustnotlook.

Having counted no less than 14 serums I am on a beauty no-buy until every single thing is gone. And every single sample is tried. She says...

SoTD Parfum de Therese. I hesitate to even dare say "meh" to such a supposed phenomenon (designed by Roudnitska for his wife and only "bequeathed" to Malle upon his death) but to me, it's yet another generic sweet perfume. If it were made by Versace or Lancome it'd be "almost a PM" but because it's what it is, I feel I need to try harder. The first spray was promising- a hint of "old lady" Grin but an hour on it's giving out a hint of modern Y meets Apres L'Ondee. Dunno at what point the indolic jasmine and leather are going to come through....at the moment can't see it happening!

explodingkittens · 03/10/2017 09:01

Am working from home today so thought I'd try a couple of trickier scents that I might not want to inflict on the tube or the office.

So left wrist is A Lab on Fire's Paris*LA. PINK MINGER. Jeez. This is basically Woolworth's pick'n'mix crossed with the Yankee Candle no one ever buys. Grim and going to scrub.

Right wrist is JHAG Citizen Queen. I tried this a couple of weeks ago and didn't like it, but for some reason I ordered 2mls instead of my usual 1, so might as well give it another go. It does open with a good aldehyde blast but am definitely not convinced so far. Won't scrub yet though, would like to see where this goes.

Am not opening that notino link...

MrsPestilence · 03/10/2017 09:07

The Fragrance shop has Mary Greenwell Fire is stock, plus perse size Lemon and Plum. They also have 6ml roller balls of a few Estee Lauders. They also have one of the hardest sites to search.

MrsPestilence · 03/10/2017 09:08

PURSE

SoTD is Union Gunpowder Rose. Thinking....

GreenPolishToGo · 03/10/2017 10:10

Good to hear DS2 is getting better Cheap.

Kittens I have never come across Nuit de Longchamp but it sounds ravishing in this review and Barbara Herman rates it in Scent and Subversion. Do let us know what you think if you try it.

Today's sample is E Coudray's Iris Rose, chosen because it came to hand while rootling and I remembered that it was Bluebell's latest discovery. I'm not quite sure myself but it isn't a scrubber. The top notes are to me comically reminiscent of the smell of a 1970s hairdressing salon - the type with the helmet hairdryers - but it is settling down into a powdery, musky, lipstick type scent - yep, very grande dame. I'll give this one another whirl.

Oh and Bluebell do ignore my witterings on vaping - it was only afterwards I realised I'd answered a question you hadn't asked in the first place! Blush

Fancy Nights sounds very interesting - the reviews on Fragrantica are mixed, to say the least. And include the description "old lady" so it must be worth a sniff. Wink

BluebellGal · 03/10/2017 11:51

Not opening link to Notino or the Fragrance shop - have spent so much of my salary on perfume this month it's ridiculous- I don't need anymore! But thank you for heads up ladies as always!

Poor kittens - I'd be pretty annoyed to invest in niche samples and discover a PM. I am also a bit meh about JHAG - they are good but not amazing

Aha green, glad to have inspired you and yes! 70s salon is what I get! A swoosh of hair product (hairspray opening maybe), heated up plastic, then later powdery like a (dare I say it) old lady's dressing table with one of those retro talc puffs. God knows why, but I luffs it Grin

BluebellGal · 03/10/2017 11:56

Oh and I don't even remember 70s salons ... I'm thinking of 80s/90s salon that we're a time warp. It's grandma chic. Please don't take offence Grin

I've gone all Chypre for my SOTD Annick Goutal Tenue de Soirée. It's VERY wearable for a Chypre - floral and sweet. Another Iris focused scent. It's definitely not in the grown up category

explodingkittens · 03/10/2017 12:31

I think Grandma Chic needs to be part of the next thread title - we may get deleted though Grin

I finally gave up on Citizen Queen. After three hours it was just soapy nothingness - no balsam/wood/amber/leather for me. If I want to smell of soap I'll buy a bar of imperial leather.

So am now in the gorgeous, sleepy embrace of Heure Exquise (Goutal Twins, bluebell!) Every time I try this I like it a little more; the iris opening is just lovely and then it dries down into a really comforting but still quite sparkly powder. I get a very vague lavender from this as well, it's just so soft and snuggly.

MrsMacNally · 03/10/2017 12:50

In Flemish?

OP posts:
BluebellGal · 03/10/2017 13:17

That's sounds lovely Kittens - Iris and powder is like a calling to me, must try. Unfortunately my Goutal is not faring well- it's turned into a PM Shock another example of accountants ruling the classy perfume house. It's not horrible but terribly mass market and not very French.

Yes! to old lady reference in next thread title and Yes! to in Flemish (a reference to comment a perfume lover on the other thread made about us - that she can't keep up with the perfumista thread and it might as well be in Flemish Grin)

Dutch for "old lady perfume lovers" is "De oude minnaars van het dameparfum"

Can't find a Flemish translator online. Anyone actually speak Flemish ??

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 03/10/2017 13:19

Mother's Mother's 70s disco funk band??

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 03/10/2017 13:20

Cross posted there - love the term dameparfum though!

OCSockOrphanage · 03/10/2017 13:33

Voting to have the title for our next thread in Flemish!

Fingers crossed that no chap enquires the name of today's scent because I am back to testing the Zoologist range, and the SoTD is Beaver. I have only just applied it but the first wave is linden blossom and vairy pretty; swiftly followed by castoreum, which is distinctly faecal. I think I need half an hour before I do my errands... just in case I need to scrub!
