We'll go anywhere in search of things that smell great, and then we discuss them here. Feel free to join us.

Mother's mother's 70s disco funk band? Are you talking to me, or about me Cheap? Loved all that 70s funk! I'm only 61. And I am not likely to be a granny for a decade as DS is still at school.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 03/10/2017 13:36

Flemish is basically the same as Dutch - different accent and expressions, stronger dialect influence - but the language taught at school is the same.
'Liefhebbers van oma parfums' would roughly translate as 'lovers/enthusiasts of granny perfume'.Grin

The Panache has staying power - it is still lingering on my skin from yesterday!

explodingkittens · 03/10/2017 13:39

Oh definitely in Flemish (or Dutch if we can't quite manage that), love it!

Talking of tricky languages, am sitting here trying to get my tongue around Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem (never even got to GSCE German) for rehearsal tonight whilst simultaneously trying to mark some poor student's MSc dissertation and not order anything from The Fragrance Shop... I have the attention span of a gnat today and I'm not helping myself checking back here every five minutes Grin

MrsMacNally · 03/10/2017 13:47

My Dutch contact tells me that Flemish and Dutch are as US and UK English?

That's 70s funk going into the Venn diagram then...?

OCSockOrphanage · 03/10/2017 13:56

+25 minutes... Beaver isn't too dangerous after all, it would seem. It's shaping up to have the longevity of a mayfly!

Part of the Venn diagram !

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 03/10/2017 14:02

Haha Sock that was my laboured code name for grandma chic! I guess it would get past the censors Grin

I don't mind a bit Craig Charles' funk soul house party on a Saturday night though so all good for the Venn diagram!

Have just caved on the 4160s crowdfunder and ordered a medium bottle of the rhubarb and custard. Probably time to set fire to my credit card...

...but, you wonderful bunch of enablers, I'm obsessing about old Guerlain now! Ridiculous since the only one I've tried is Shalimar (but is one of my favourites so not helping!). SOTD is Samsara - not an old one but I do like it. That cycle of obsession thread is apt - I keep looking at pictures of the beautiful 250ml golden bee bottles. Swoon!!! I need help - obviously (!) if I get a few samples of the classics I'll get this out of my system. Any ideas where I can find them? The usual go tos I can think of either don't have guerlain at all, or else they focus on the newer stuff. Where do I get Jicky et al from?!

MrsPestilence · 03/10/2017 14:10

Union Gunpowder Rose smells of Yardley English Rose soap mixed with Wrights Coal Tar and a bit of generic shampoo. It smells just like I do when I get out of the bath but ten times stronger. Interestingly it is marketed as a Man's fragrance.

Good grief that other thread got weird (in some places). I guess it depends whether you mean OLD - worn out, past its best, tired, stale, frayed, senile and polyester clad OR OLD - mature, experienced, worth keeping, wise elder with impeccable taste in tweed, jewellery and of course perfume.

Maybe we are incomprehensible because we not only respect old ladies perfume but are innately curious about it.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 03/10/2017 14:12

Cheap I got a set of Guerlain samples from Surrender to Chance. It was a selection of their classics.

OCSockOrphanage · 03/10/2017 14:20

I have a decant of Jicky, but had to get it from The Perfumed Court in the US. Their prices are fair and their shipping costs reasonable, and everything has always been good from them. They were my go to before the sample sites in the UK improved.

How many enables gets you a badge? Is it like Blue Peter badges?

MrsPestilence · 03/10/2017 14:22

Lots of retro samples at Surrender to Chance.

MrsPestilence · 03/10/2017 14:28

Flemish Bommas Scent Appreciation Society?

Bomma, according to the power of Google, is Flemish for Gran/Granny/Grandma, and hopefully sufficiently obscure that no one will lynch us before we can explain that we think bommas have fabulous taste in perfume.

Cheap my Guerlains have been part used eBay bargains. If you're patient something in the right price range will turn up eventually. If you can't wait, then decants are the way to go. But don't forget the risk of Customs fees on parcels from non-EU countries. In my experience US post always gets caught.

BluebellGal · 03/10/2017 15:04

Good name Green, it'll be time to use it soon - the thread is filling up fast. If MN is popular in NL we may get lynched. But there's enough evidence here of our love for granny perfumes, so we should be ok if we link back to this thread.

I've got a headache from the Goutal Tenue de Soirée. It started out so promising. It is now a teenage body spray which is getting stronger as the day goes on. I can't believe they call this a Chypre - it's a fruity floral gourmand

BluebellGal · 03/10/2017 15:12

Just realised we're the inverse of typical ageism here.... we dig "granny scents" diss "teenage PMs"! Grin

MrsPestilence · 03/10/2017 15:16

Does anyone know of any Flemish perfumes?

explodingkittens · 03/10/2017 15:24

Google suggests that Caldey Island Lavender, which I know is much-beloved on this thread, was actually composed by a Flemish perfumer. So not just Flemish but lavender too...we've hit old-lady paydirt Grin

explodingkittens · 03/10/2017 15:26

In fact it's in the Turin and Sanchez book.

MrsPestilence · 03/10/2017 15:28

we've hit old-lady paydirt can somebody please translate this into Flemish Grin

MrsPestilence · 03/10/2017 15:39

Linguistically and formally, "Flemish" refers to the region, culture and people of (North) Belgium or Flanders. So Louison Libertin is our Flemish nose, apparently the only Belgian Nose. Will be reading up on these Reviews look interesting Hmm

MrsMacNally · 03/10/2017 15:59

Worrying a bit about potential Welsh backlash Pest.

Wondering what 'lovely friendly perfume thread' is in Flemish....
