We'll go anywhere in search of things that smell great, and then we discuss them here. Feel free to join us.

Why are we not allowed to talk about Zoologist perfumes by name? I must have missed something

I caved and purchased the Rhubard Custard trio from 4160 (they sold out but added more).

Pestilentialone · 29/09/2017 13:13

Chiroptophobia gets some people badly. So one of the Zoologist perfumes has become b*t. You can name the others, even Beaver.

OCSockOrphanage · 29/09/2017 13:24

B*t has been consigned to the reject drawer forthwith! No, it does not improve from wet leaves and wool. In its favour, the sillage is fairly limited and the longevity not enormous.

A scrub, followed by a spritz of the Civet. Will give it an hour or two before I judge....

BluebellGal · 29/09/2017 13:36

Aha! Thanks for explaining Pest

Pestilentialone · 29/09/2017 13:50

OC for Cabotine Fr.ed gives
Anais Anais, Cacharel
Artemisia, Penhaligon's
Nocturnes, Caron
English Bluebell, Yardley
Very Irrésistible Sensual, Givenchy
and
Fleur de Chine, Tom Ford
That's quite a varied selection of suggestions to build on.

London to Mumbai is much better sprayed on elbow crooks and cleavage. I smell like the inside of a very posh old wooden spice cupboard, complete with lavender sachet or a pomander.

MrsMacNally · 29/09/2017 14:30

By chance have been in B** and Civet today. I really like them both. Appreciate a cool mineral/vegetal fizz isn't everyone's bag, but definitely works for me. The opening is a curiously dank sweetcorn but the heart/dry down, whilst still striking and unusual, are a bit less challenging. Civet is plummy, buttery and gorgeous. I'd like 15ml of each - will have to save up for a travel set.

PiaM - L'Heure Bleue makes me think of the intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana.

OCSockOrphanage · 29/09/2017 17:03

Twins for a day!

Civet is very civilised; buttery is an excellent description. I don't think I'd want 15ml though, but the second wear will tell all.

Thanks for the Cabotine follow on suggestions. I am fairly sure I have a decent sample of Artemisia somewhere in the pencil case that I can offer, but no others.

Both piercingly beautiful, yet melancholy? Yes, I see why you say that MrsMac. Thank you for reminding me to listen to it again.

Tried the new perfumes in lush today
Was underwhelmed

PerfumeIsAMessage · 29/09/2017 17:24

Oh yes, wonderful music. Smile Aching.
Reminded me to email dd's violin teacher too....(sadly we are still at the eeeeeuuuuuuuuuuuuuuwwwwuwwwwwwwwwwuuuwwwwweeeee strangled cat level rather than the awe inspiring concert orchestra level....hey ho.

BluebellGal · 29/09/2017 18:11

Yes badders I was underwhelmed too by Lush's new perfumes

SOTE is Prada Infusions D'Oeillet which I didn't appreciate until today. It's perfect for autumn as it's warm and spicy. I'm getting a strong note of clove even though it's not listed on fragrantica (I think that might be the carnations though?). It's really fab and is starting to go powdery - a hallmark of the Infusions series I'm thinking.

The Prada Infusions series is really rather good. No duds and unusual accords/ high quality for a mainstream fashion house

Badders08 · 29/09/2017 18:13

Oh I'm rather fond of carnation

MaryLennoxsScowl · 29/09/2017 18:49

Bluebell have you tried Serge Lutens' Vitriol d'Oeillet? It's carnation too and I rather love it. Spicy but cold.

explodingkittens · 29/09/2017 19:10

SOTEvening is Imaginary Authors' Violet Disguise. I am total sucker for violets and this does have that Parma Violets thing going on, underpinned by a very fruity accord. Against my better judgement, I kinda like this! It's a bit cheeky, probably better on someone twenty years my junior though... Am off out for dinner and drinks with a friend who needs cheering up, so this is probably a good choice.

Also tried Histoires des Parfums' Olympia, Music Hall, for which I had high hopes. Sadly it disappeared into soapy nothingness after half an hour, but the top notes were glorious and there was a really exciting smoky, cigarette-y note in there too. Hey ho, maybe it will work better as a cleavage scent rather than a wrist one...now I just need a cleavage!

GreenPolishToGo · 29/09/2017 20:36

PIAM yes DS is still at the excruciatingly screechy stage too. Violin teachers must have nerves of steel.

After all these classy niche scents with fabulous names I shall lower the tone by saying today's sample (if I reduce the pile of untrieds I will have an excuse to buy another Perfume Society box Wink ) was Agent Provocateur Pure Aphrodisiac. Fruity, floral, forgettable...another clone of the regiment of PMs infesting High Street perfume counters at the moment.

Having duly forgotten the PM I had a much more entertaining time comparing vintage Eau de Calandre on one wrist with vintage Rive Gauche on the other. Goodness they really are similar. Rive Gauche is brighter and sharper, but Eau de Calandre is lovely in a more muted way - as though one is painted in oils and the other in watercolours.

Bluebell that LookFantastic Advent Calender is gorgeous. You'll enjoy storing samples in it. And of course you can have two! In fact if one's a 12 and one's a 24, then surely the 12 isn't really for Advent at all but should run up to Twelfth Night...Sounds persuasive to me, anyway.

Pestilentialone · 29/09/2017 20:52

Green you could probably manage to justify a 40 door calendar for lent Grin

OCSockOrphanage · 29/09/2017 21:02

Lent is about denial, unless I have missed the point. Perhaps we should have a 40 day perfume shopping ban and use our samples and swap. Just saying'...... not totally serious.

OCSockOrphanage · 29/09/2017 21:05

Gardeners often say that carnations and pinks have a clove note. They are so much grown round here by market gardeners we tend to take their rich scent for granted, and they are so cheap as cut flowers.

Pestilentialone · 29/09/2017 21:06

Feck it is Michaelmas. I wondered why DH was going on about blackberries, apparently they become devils spawn tomorrow. Today was a day to feast on perfume. Lent should be devoted to eau de cologne.

Judydreamsofhorses · 29/09/2017 21:48

SOTD was FM Hiver, but have since have a bath and am now in Black Opium and cosy pjs.kittens, I ordered MMM Fireplace today.

OCSockOrphanage · 29/09/2017 22:13

Well done judy. Love Hiver, so Fireplace is likely to succeed, especially as you like MM generally

Civet is quite soothing, settles down nicely, not a wow.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 30/09/2017 09:07

Have ordered a vintage bottle of Panache from eBay - can't wait to smell it and see if it smells how I remember. Was very tempted by some of the lots of vintage perfumes I saw.

SOTD is a layering of Rome 1963 and Jasmin et Cigarette. The first smells strongly tobacco on me but is missing a floral note while it's the other way round with Jasmin et Cigarette. Hoping I get the best of both worlds this way. Grin

MrsMacNally · 30/09/2017 09:40

Morning All.

Ohh - that sounds a lovely combination Boldly.

Am side by siding Traversee du Bosphore and vintage Cabochard after the Michael Edwards Fragrance Finder threw out three identical choices in response to both of these. It categorised them both as dry woods (leathery woods). They are, but they are also quite different. TdB is a sweetly floral leather and Cabochard is much smokier and, to start with, even a bit skanky in a direct comparison. I realise that Cabochard smells clean and dirty all at once (soapy/skanky).

Feeling anxious at the Lent talk....

Hope you enjoy it judy, it's definitely a toasty autumnal scent.

Have done my good deed for the week and bought a little bottle of Acqua di Gio off ebay for the friend I saw last night. I can't stand the stuff but she loved it and was loudly lamenting its discontinuation. So that will hopefully be a nice surprise for her!

No SOTD for me; am perfume-free right now as am just about to hit the shops...
