Shit products - don't waste your money

A couple of times recently, I've been so flabbergastingly disappointed with a product, I've wanted to tell other people, to save them from the same pain. So I thought it might be useful for us to have a thread, where we could all share this stuff.

I'll start...

Charles Worthington Everyday Gentle Weightless Conditioner, which should be renamed Useless Conditioner. I had high hopes. It promises to stop fine hair from getting bogged down with heavy conditioner. The trouble is that it also doesn't condition or do basic detangling. My DP (who has a hearing problem) could hear my hair breaking when I was brushing it after using the conditioner. That bad.

Avoid the clinique clarifying lotions (toners). Other than they have some of the better skincare products available on the high-street.

Pixie glow lotion- doesn't do anything!

bigkidsdidit · 27/08/2017 21:36

Ooh really Bobbin? I'll try that (triumph of hope )

Mrstwiddle · 27/08/2017 22:07

I bought benefit gimme brow after reading amazing reviews, absolutely hated it...didnt do anything for my eyebrows, better off using a powder.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/08/2017 22:27

I also bought GimmeBrow and am decidedly unimpressed with it.

Runningyogabooze · 27/08/2017 22:55

BetterYou Magnesium Spray - I add magnesium flakes to my bath and so thought the spray sounded a good idea.

Firstly it HURTS (no idea why) and secondly it is SO greasy, it never seems to be absorbed into your skin, so you go to bed sticking to the sheets in v unrelaxing fashion. I binned my hardly used bottle of this last week as I'd had enough.

I think Clarins has gone off the boil recently and agree re: Beauty Flash Balm.

This is a great thread - have read all 14 pages.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 27/08/2017 23:02

Bobbi Brown cream blusher is great Imo.

And I love GimmeBrow, find it much easier to apply than a powder.

7ways · 27/08/2017 23:27

Don't know if it's already been said but the St Tropez that you put on in the shower is pure shite. I knew it was too good to be true!

IvorHughJarrs · 27/08/2017 23:42

Anything from No7 is always a disappointment, colours never look right on, creams never make my skin feel nice and it has a whiff of stale grease

Bare Minerals gave me pores I didn't know I had but when I built it up more, as the consultant recommended, it went thick and shiny, like when you wet talc

Jo Malone fragrances smell gorgeous but last about 10 minutes

Nars Orgasm blusher. It is supposed to suit all skins and make you look 10 years younger. Not me, I looked like a glittery slightly startled middle-aged woman

Chocwocdoodah · 27/08/2017 23:49

Oh and Penhaligons. £70 a bottle (at least) for 5-10 minutes of fragrance. Utter crap.

WomblingThree · 27/08/2017 23:52

@Melabela10 that LRP BB cream is my holy grail. The texture is amazing, especially when I apply it with a flat kabuki brush.

I don't like OPI nail varnish; I've never found one that doesn't streak. I don't get the hype or the price. Not tried Chanel, but I couldn't bring myself to pay that much for nail varnish. Most of mine are China Glaze or Barry M.

I'm quite impressed with The Ordinary. It's about the only range I've ever tried where none of the products make my face sore.

cafenoirbiscuit · 28/08/2017 00:02

Simple cleansing wipes made my face burn like buggery. And flared up my excema, and gave me acne. I put the whole bloody lot in the bin.

ScrambledSmegs · 28/08/2017 00:03

I bloody love this thread but can't really contribute - have rosacea and skincare is effectively dictated by that. Everything I have works but can't do purchases on a whim because my skin would feel like those nazis faces at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

However, back when I could use this stuff, Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish was amazing - and then all of a sudden it wasn't. I'm reasonably sure they changed the formulation because I suddenly got horrific cystic spots when using it. Had to stop.

Bare Minerals foundations simultaneously dried my skin to almost mummified proportions and gave me spots. Not sure what that was about. I can use Lily Lolo now although none of the shades are quite right for my skin tone and was glad to find a better match in Bare Minerals. Shame I had to bin it when it was hardly used.

Ilovetea33 · 28/08/2017 00:23

Benefit Dr. Feelgood - very heavy consistency, can't figure out what I'm supposed to do with it.

WildIrishRose1 · 28/08/2017 00:25

Havent RTFT, but I love the Big Hair - have it for years and my hair looks nothing like its usual frizz when I use it - the Charles Worthington conditioner, and Bare Minerals.

Germgirl · 28/08/2017 00:40

I was sucked into the Lush Sleepy hype. Millions (or so it seems) FB posts about people sleeping for hours on end after rubbing a bit of mauve cream on themselves.
Ordered a big pot and anticipated a good nights sleep at last.
It smells like my nans handbag. But I was prepared to overlook that.
What I cant overlook is the fact that I've had possibly the worst two nights sleep ever since I started using it. I'm not completely blaming the lilac goo, I'm not well, I have a lot of pain and dizziness, I have a very uncomfortable PICC line in my arm, but even so! It's awful.

intergalacticbrexitdisco · 28/08/2017 02:36

It smells like my nans handbag

Bwahahaaaaaaaa! :D

Grawp · 28/08/2017 03:15

...But I was prepared to overlook that Grin

please leave a review on the Lush website Germ!

Fruitboxjury · 28/08/2017 03:46

Kiehl's hydro plumping retexturising serum gave me horrendous breakouts which I couldn't fathom until I stopped using it for a week and had clear skin again. Apparently silicones can do this but I don't think it has any?

Aussie Miracle Moist - turned my thick fine hair into limp greasy mess, it's definitely the silicone that does it

Another vote for BBH, I'm less than impressed with the results, really disappointed as I had a fantastic heated brush that I left on holiday and bought BBH to replace it. I think the barrel is too big for me and my hair is too thick. I don't have time to section it off every day.

EdinaMonsoon · 28/08/2017 04:20

Avene Micellar Cleanser is awful. Made my skin sting & left it really dry.

Mac lipsticks also very drying & fade quickly.

Clarins Extra Firming Day Creme is good but no better than L'Oreal ExtraOrdinary Oil Cream which is at least half the price.

Wella System Professional shampoos & conditioners are crap. My salon switched from Kerastase to this brand. I dutifully bought some & it leaves my hair lank & greasy.

Most salt sprays do not create beach waves in my hair. I end up with matted dull straw. The only one that worked was one that I bought in the US that had coconut oil in & left the hair smelling amazing & really soft.

Therealslimshady1 · 28/08/2017 05:54

Fruitbox, the 3rd ingredient is dimethicone, which is a silicone!

That serum is almost purely glycerin and silicone! Someone is making a fortune there!

OMG I'm so upset as someone crashed into me when I was in morrisons car park and drove off! I went to my car and saw the damage and went in to demand cctv and they don't have any. It's so upsetting. Flowers to us both

Hulder · 28/08/2017 07:51

I love Gimme Brow but it is a 'better than your natural brows' look - if you want more brow than that, it's probably not for you.

Ninarina · 28/08/2017 07:53

Oh sorry also forgot to mention shit products.
Advanced Night repair did nothing for me but I still tried Double Wear foundation. Also does nothing for me.
Mac lipstick look nice for five minutes then vanish.

Margomyhero · 28/08/2017 08:07

Every brow product I have tried has been shite - other than Benefit Gimme Brow.

I've tried powders, gels, mascara type items - all make me look like i have two slugs lounging on my forehead.

As I am a lazy bones I just get mine tinted once every 4 weeks at the local hair salon. Costs me a tenner and no effort necessary on my part.

Liiinoo · 28/08/2017 08:54

The original Clarins Chubby sticks for lips. I loved the look of them and bought several before realising they had so little pigment I might as well not bother putting them on. The recent Crayola range was better.

Anything Charlotte tilbury seems to be all hype (and again I fell for it). The Magic cream is awful. I tried it a few times and threw it away, heavily scented, sticky, just awful.

I love Bobbi Brown products except for the shimmer bricks. They do very little and always seem to fall apart after a few weeks.

Luckily I have daughters so all my costly mistakes get passed on to them.
