Is Joules 'mumsy'?

Ladycocobrazil · 21/05/2017 13:39

Bought a new top from Joules, tunic with bright flowers on and my husband says I look mumsy. To be fair I am a mum of 2 and 40 but just wanted to know what the consensus was about Joules stuff?

I can imagine MaQ, it was only this year though, so hardly taxing.

Bleddy is the rugger of swears imo Maud

MaQueen · 22/05/2017 13:47

Nah, I think it impressive Niffler considering I can remember feck all about you Wink

hiccupgirl · 22/05/2017 13:48

I'm very firmly middle aged (45 is looming fast) and a mum. I don't buy from Joules because it's too identifiable IMO. Too bright, flowery and garish although I did nearly get a nice blazer in the sale but it had a logo that put me off.

I do buy Boden because I think it blends in better with the rest of my wardrobe and some WS and FF for the same reasons. I bought a lovely top from Oasis last year and it shrunk badly on the first wash and was unwearable which put me right off there.

But when it comes down to it, wear what you like. I love bright colours and a bit of pattern. Wearing neutrals or lots of plain matching shades makes me feel down so I stick to what I like.

MaQueen · 22/05/2017 13:49

Actually bleddy is a Midlands term, Sue Townsend uses it quite a lot in her Adrian Mole books...

Maudlinmaud · 22/05/2017 13:51

All the same, I might introduce it into my vernacular. I could do with a touch of class.

MaQueen · 22/05/2017 13:57

Be my guest Maud Smile

GreenHairDontCare · 22/05/2017 14:02

HATE the term 'Mumsy'.

I'm a mum, I'm pushing forty, and I'm much, ahem, curvier than I was in my twenties.

If my Joules breton, M&S jeans and biker boots make me look like a mum who only really does the school run, walks the dog and does a bit of shopping, well, that's who I am!

I need comfortable, wearable clothes that suit my lifestyle. That tends to be Joules, Marksies, White Stuff etc.

If I tried to look like some kind of willowy French lady, I'd look like a massive tit. Ditto if I wafted around in skirts or dresses. It's just not me.

I know it's the 'mum uniform' but hey ho. I do have bright pink hair so I don't feel completely regulation Grin

I love Joules clothes!
If I could afford it, my wardrobe would be entirely Joules and Seasalt.

Then again, I am a mum and I am 40 Grin

Although I have an unmarried friend with no DC and she also wears a lot of Joules Confused

StarsAndStripes18 · 22/05/2017 15:04

Love Cath Kidston too Grin

TheNiffler · 22/05/2017 15:58

That's it, Green. You dress for who you are. Bit daft to do otherwise, you're fooling nobody

PollyPerky · 22/05/2017 16:16

But what do you all buy from Joules?

I find the dresses frumpy - the patterns are a bit weird- don't want a stripy T shirt dress or a floaty sleeveless thing.

Breton tops- everywhere.

Jeans- same as everywhere.

Knitwear- oversized and droopy.

Scarves- lovely 100% polyester. Yuck.

jackets- passable but a bit 'look I'm wearing Joules'.

Floisme · 22/05/2017 16:24

I do like their tweed jackets - the ones in muted colours - that they do in winter. I know some people fear the Miss Marple factor but I think she's cool.

BusterGonad · 22/05/2017 16:39

I have a Joules cardy from 8 years ago, it's a pale lemon cashmere mix, it had a tie right on the breasts, it made them look so saggy so I cut them off and now i love it. Funny thing is I didn't wear it for a few years and now I always wear it. Maybe because I was nervous of the colour but now I wear what I like and what puts a smile on my face! Grin

MaQueen · 22/05/2017 16:55

"That's it, Green. You dress for who you are. Bit daft to do otherwise, you're fooling nobody"

Don't most people dress for who they are? It's just that I'm not a vari-
coloured, Joules fleece, that's all.

MaQueen · 22/05/2017 16:58

I actually prefer Joules to Cath Kidston. I saw a dress in CK, bright red and festooned with little toadstools- and there was a matching cardi with mushroom shaped buttons.

Why on Earth would a grown woman want to dress like Big Ear's wife FFS???

FrustratedFrugal · 22/05/2017 17:06

I have a stripy Joules top (nice, thick cotton), one of their horsey quilted jackets (a flattering shade of green, superb quality, great for travelling and wearing under an oversized winter coat), two blanket scarves (see the pic, I love them), two Right as Rain rain jackets and one Coast jacket.

I'm in rainy Scandinavia and we wear raIncoats for nine months each year. Very few people around here have heard about Joules but countless people have approached me to ask me where they could buy them. So I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with the items.

I'm 40+ and a mother of two, but I don't feel that I've lost my way. My staples are from H&M, Mango, Zara, Gap, COS, &Other Stories, Esprit and Uniqlo with the odd designer bit thrown in to complete the outfit.

Is Joules 'mumsy'?
BusterGonad · 22/05/2017 17:18

MaQueen Big Ears wife. 😂

heateallthebuns · 22/05/2017 17:22

There's the odd thing I like, but mostly mumsy yes.

GreenHairDontCare · 22/05/2017 17:30

Well exactly. I'd look daft in a turtle neck (bit jowly tbf) and my wide shoulders and saggy boobs mean anything strapless is a horror show.

I know what suits me and I'm not trying to desperately convince myself I'm a maven of style and grace. So as boring and frumpy my wardrobe may be (it's not), I'm happy that I don't look like a bag of spanners. Which is all anyone can hope for, really Grin

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 22/05/2017 17:31

Don't you just love a mumsnet style and beauty thread. If it's not high fashion, costs a fortune from some obscure designer or from Top shop or zara its classed as mumsy!!!

Women should just be able to wear what they are comfortable in and what suits them without worry of ridicule as heaven forbid should a 41yr old mum of three look like a 41yr old mum of three!

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 22/05/2017 17:43

I personally don't wear Joules clothes, as I don't like patterns, but I wouldn't term it 'mumsy' because I'm not a twat.

If you like it and feel it suits you, then wear it and bloody well enjoy it.

Excuse me carabos that I didn't ping back into a YouTube flat 6 pack yum after having my DC. Once I do get that sorted, then I'll pop on my g string and river island club outfit. I'll pm you a pic too, just to cheer you up Hmm

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/05/2017 18:54

I don't get the Zara love. The quality is poor and it seems expensive for what it is.
