Is Joules 'mumsy'?

Ladycocobrazil · 21/05/2017 13:39

Bought a new top from Joules, tunic with bright flowers on and my husband says I look mumsy. To be fair I am a mum of 2 and 40 but just wanted to know what the consensus was about Joules stuff?

If Joules was ever transmuted into a holiday it would be a breezy, Whitsun weekend in Salcombe...

Personally, I prefer a weekend in Paris Wink

MaQueen · 21/05/2017 22:21

Agree navy I would definitely say frumpy, not mumsy

taybert · 21/05/2017 22:26

It was an observation that there's a thread every week about a brand or outfit being "mumsy" or "frumpy" then other threads almost as often about whether people are too old to wear something or if it's "mutton". Seems to me there's a pretty small window of what's deemed not to fall in to either of those categories.

If you like the top OP then wear it. And tell your husband his jeans make him look "dadsy". Whatever that means.

I think it's his dull, frumpy and not very stylish. I wouldn't wear any of it and I'm 43. Mind you I still dress mostly in Zara H&M and New Look so what do I know?

HarrietSchulenberg · 21/05/2017 23:28

It all depends on your body shape and how you wear your clothes. And WTF does "mumsy" mean? Stupid, negative term used by insecure people who aspire to appear youthful but feel they are not. Or to put down other women to make themselves better. Technically it should be a positive word to describe someone who is a mother, but no, it's used for derision.
Just try the clothes on and if they fit and you like them, buy them and wear them.

Allice · 22/05/2017 06:27

I live in joules clothes, most of my work wear is their blouses and dresses, I'm 44 and just don't care!
I bought a dress from white stuff on Saturday too so I'm truly doomed!

Spudlet · 22/05/2017 06:38

Well, God forbid any woman should look like she might possibly have reproduced, right? How awful. Although remember, women without children are cold, career-obsessed bitches so don't be one of those, either! Angry

Sorry, I hate the term 'mumsy'. It's sexist shite which reflects our society's completely fucked up attitude towards women in general and childbearing in particular and I find it utterly loathsome. I'd worry less about the top you're wearing and more about setting your dh straight on this point, tbh. While wearing my Joules top, of which I have many Grin

gingeristhenewblack43 · 22/05/2017 06:40

I get asked all the time where I got some of my tops from. One in particular gets comments from shop assistants and I get stopped in the street by randoms saying how lovely it is. They're always Joules tops. Nothing wrong with being mumsy Wink

taybert · 22/05/2017 06:41

No Navy, I can see that. I was just making a point that between being frumpy and dressing too "young" it's sometimes difficult to see what's left.

Therealslimshady1 · 22/05/2017 06:56

I have a joules dress that manages to be sexy and demure at the same time (very nipped in). It is genius, but now they cut dresses for "straight up and down" shapes, which I can't wear...

Yep, mumsy as a lob, statement necklace, boot cut jeans and a ticket for Take That, wouldn't go near. And I'm 40.

BusterGonad · 22/05/2017 07:23

Wendy 😂 I'm surprised you didn't mention the mum boot!

AWendyAteMyFitbit · 22/05/2017 07:26

Indeed buster Grin,** its a bit early for me obvs.

HexeSauerkraut · 22/05/2017 07:31

Go Spudlet! You sound like my friend who's a sociologist Smile.

Tanaqui · 22/05/2017 07:44

The thing is Ma, I actively don't want to look sexy at work! I'm a teacher, I want to look friendly, approachable, calm, unflappable, capable, clean- lots of things, but not not not sexy!

BusterGonad · 22/05/2017 07:57

I'll let you off then Wendy, it is very early! Grin

MinesaPinot · 22/05/2017 09:38

At the end of the day OP, if it's what you like and what suits you then who's to say otherwise. The Joules shop that used to be in Sevenoaks was always a bit floral-y for me so I didn't go in there, but having had a look on the website I quite like a couple of the dresses and tops.

In every shop or online at the moment I think you have to really search but there are some gems out there (but not the Pepto-Bismol M & S dress obviously).

CreamCheez · 22/05/2017 09:41

Can't say I've ever been to tempted to walk into my local Joules... Used to like Cath Kidston etc when I was younger, but not now I'm over 40. Not that I listen to him... But my husband says l look better in less fussy things!

FiftyShadesOfDuckEggBlue · 22/05/2017 12:05

As some people above said, Joules do the best Breton tops! I like their other stuff too (don't care if they're mumsy!), but usually I find them a little too expensive.

TheNiffler · 22/05/2017 12:49

Says the poster who thought a White Stuff tunic teamed with leggings bare feet, and ballet flats suitable for a family funeral 🙄

MaQueen · 22/05/2017 13:31

Yep, you're absolutely right Niffler (your memory is impressive, I must say). Though in the end, I teamed it with opaque black tights and black boots because it was bleddy freezing.

But, the tunic is now in the bag for the charity box, tis not a flattering outfit, I have to say.

Maudlinmaud · 22/05/2017 13:34

Bleddy is such a lovely word. Almost pretentious in fact.
