Is Joules 'mumsy'?

Ladycocobrazil · 21/05/2017 13:39

Bought a new top from Joules, tunic with bright flowers on and my husband says I look mumsy. To be fair I am a mum of 2 and 40 but just wanted to know what the consensus was about Joules stuff?

I got a couple of very flattering work dresses from joules a few years back, little sleeves and mid thigh length, both of which are not easy to find. I think the quality and choice has declined since then.

I would be interested in where those of us with a bit of a tummy, boobs and untoned arms should be looking? I'm currently 40 wks pregnant and always hold my weight round my middle, so will need something flattering around the middle for the foreseeable.

i just bought \link{https://www.joules.com/Women/Shoes-Boots/Fenthorpe/Leather-Two-Band-Sandals/French-Navy?id=W_FENTHORPE|FRNAVY\these} from joules. i really like them!

Also love their tweed and wellies.

I think if you wear any brand head to toe it can look a bit 'branded'

I find that the cut in Joules is a bit too boxy for me, I had a fab pink sort-of-fleece 10 years ago and I got a great silver handbag for £20 in the sale this year. I still do think the ff, ws, ss are the best shops on the high street for fabrics though. I think of Next as completely different though- I never even go in!

WS used to be great for clothes to teach in- quirky that the kids would comment, but super decent; but he quality has declined imo. Loads of my casual stuff was FF but they seem to cut for pear shapes now- though my disinter gave me a denim halterneck last year that looks fab in me and I would have never tried on!

We don't have an H and m, and their sizing is too unpredictable to bother online. I like Zara, but quality can be shocking- I've got a gorgeous embroidered mini and the stictching was coming undone after 2 wears!

yes they are, though i haven't really tested them for too long yet as it's been too cold Grin

Grin like the sound of tangerine sandals

I find these threads so strange.. people saying that Joules and Boden are mumsy but Jigsaw, Whistles and Cos are cool? Each to their own but personally I find Cos clothes are generally boring, dull colours and totally shapeless but wouldn't label someone who liked to wear those clothes. Whistles and Jigsaw are not much better, very 'middle class' and certainly not what you'd call stylish.
But ultimately Wear what you want? Who cares what anyone else thinks? I have a couple of Bretons from Joules and love them. I also have a seasalt raincoat, new balance trainers and a few Boden sweaters floating around my wardrobe so I'm sure I look a 'type' but I don't give a shit! I also buy stuff from Topshop, newlook, oasis and H & M. Work on the principle that if you like it, feel good in it and it gives you confidence then wear it.

PUGaLUGS · 21/05/2017 20:47

I shop in Jigsaw, Reiss and Zara.

FlossieFrog · 21/05/2017 20:58

I just googled "mumsy clothes" and Boden was the top hit! Read into that what you will!

I find some of the sneering about different brands on here rather sad. I've just had a personal styling session and bought tops from Jigsaw, White Stuff, Joules and Mint Velvet. If that makes me mumsy so be it. I think these (and the other items I bought) make me look better than I have in years. However it tried plenty of items from other brands that looked bloody awful.

As far as I'm concerned if you wear clothes that are good colours and cuts for you, and that you feel happy wearing, then what anybody else thinks is irrelevant. I'm not going to wear fashionable clothes simply because of what other people think.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 21/05/2017 21:02

I'm 23, not a Mum and own a shit tonne of joules clothing. And sea salt and fat face and crew clothing. I love it!

AFierceBadRabbit · 21/05/2017 21:06

I don't think they're mumsy exactly, but then even as someone who has no kids I can't see why looking like a mum is a bad thing? Am i missing something? Mums look pretty good to me!

Joules I can't tolerate because they publicly endorsed fox hunting in their ad campaigns.
Cunts.

Floisme · 21/05/2017 21:18

The OP did ask tbf Floisme.
I know she asked. And I answered but said I hate the term and said why.

Joules used to be horsey. Now it tends towards the mumsy

Fadingmemory · 21/05/2017 21:45

The striped tops are good. Flowery/shiny clothes and most of the rest are frumpy. Friends buy from the children''s range.

PNGirl · 21/05/2017 21:49

I think "mumsy" is sometimes used incorrectly as a synonym for "unimaginative". I have a couple of Joules bretons which are great to chuck on on a Monday morning when I really can't be arsed to overthink my outfit.

MaQueen · 21/05/2017 22:01

God, yes. Yes. And thrice yes, again...

I've got 6 years on you OP but wouldn't dream of wearing Joules. I always think that Joules and (most of) White Stuff is designed for women who are scared of looking remotely sexy.

Just grim.

oddthing · 21/05/2017 22:10

that's just a stupid thing to say maqueen.

i suppose if you look quite bland and need clothing to make you look 'sexy' then perhaps joules isn't for you

WellErrr · 21/05/2017 22:13

odd Grin

I've been wearing Joules since they only made riding and sailing clothes. I wear it because it's very good quality, wears well, and looks nice without being OTT for school runs and bbqs etc.

I hear it's fairly popular. I don't think all these people that wear it do so because they are afraid.

MaQueen · 21/05/2017 22:14

Just my humble opinion... Wink

taybert · 21/05/2017 22:16

I'm a little concerned that some of the women in this thread might be getting ideas that they should shop and "young" shops, leading to a mutton dressed as lamb situation. Careful everyone!

PollyPerky · 21/05/2017 22:17

I just find Joules doesn't have much. The same stripy bretons, a few ordinary trousers, some T shirt dresses, a few summer dresses in garish prints, often chintz, droopy shirts and then the tweedy horsey jackets.
It doesn't change from year to year. I really don't 'get' them at all.
I'm 60s but am told I look late 40s, and wouldn't wear it.

MaQueen · 21/05/2017 22:17

It's popular because it's good quality, it's comfy and it's safe (nothing wrong with being safe). When I think of Joules clothes, I associate it with being very wholesome, sturdy, well-made, etc, etc. It's certainly the go-to uniform for many of the women around here...

It also peddles a certain lifestyle which many people aspire to.
