Are Style bloggers wealthy as a result of their blogs or do only wealthy women actually blog in the first place?

Just wondering really as every single style blog I come across is written by someone who appears to have pots of cash and thinks an item reduced to £200 from £300 is a 'bargain'?

I seriously can't get over the amount most of them seem to spend on clothes!

OP posts:

The blue denim were def the best on me though. I think My Fashionable 40s has similar green ones which just looked plain daft on me.

Maudlinmaud · 10/05/2017 21:20

The shops are full of them and it pisses me off because this year capris are very scarce. I had to order a pair from Asda Grin there was none anywhere else. I had no idea about the fit or quality. They haven't arrived yet.

CrispyBathTowel · 10/05/2017 21:21

Here Grin

CrispyBathTowel · 10/05/2017 21:24

Will stop derailing the thread now Blush

Maudlinmaud · 10/05/2017 21:30

Looks like it's just us anyway Grin
I actually think those are quite nice on you, the edges of them just remind me of longer jeans I wore in noughties. They certainly don't add pounds.

sowhatusernameisnttaken · 10/05/2017 21:56

I feel like I'm missing something with aforementioned blogger, is she REALLY stylish?!!

CrispyBathTowel · 10/05/2017 22:13

is it the blogger who is in her 40s and is fashionable that you're referring to so what? I don't know if stylish is a word I'd use but I find her relatable as I have a lot of similar things anyway plus I think the things she links to orvwears are affordable, realistic and wearable for my lifestyle unlike a lot of blogs.

CrispyBathTowel · 10/05/2017 22:15

They're still not for me Maud - I'll just admire them from afar on bloggers and continue my hunt for the perfect casual summer trousers. Though I did get a pair of navy roll-up chinos recently which are a nice fit (from M&S of all places)

EnidButton · 11/05/2017 01:42

TheyCalled I don't follow them on Instagram sorry so I don't know.

glitter Ah, thank you. I didn't know she had bride/wedding channel.

EnidButton · 11/05/2017 01:48

scrubs her face like it's a 1940's front step

Grin love this.

sowhatusernameisnttaken · 11/05/2017 14:13

crispybathtowel yep. Just not my cup of tea at all but I guess there's different bloggers for different tastes.

MaQueen · 11/05/2017 14:40

I only really bother with 'My Fashionable 40s' now, and 'MyLittleFrenchCloset' which is the French site that MF40s steals lots of ideas from (but she's honest about this).

I really love MF40s style, and the way she puts pieces together. She likes to make her clothes work hard for a living, and is very good at mixing and matching. She uses the same key pieces time and again. Plus, most of it is very affordable, very wearable, and from H&M, Mango, Topshop etc.

Thanks to her, my wardrobe is looking much fresher and (hopefully) more stylish. Since I have started copying her style my DDs have started complementing me and bleddy borrowing my clothes Hmm

I did follow 'Midlife Chic' for a while, but find her taste waaaaaay too classic frumpy for my taste. She always looks like she's dressed head2toe from Country Casuals gear, and you just know that deep down she loves a beige twin-set and pearls...

Judydreamsofhorses · 11/05/2017 14:40

I follow a lot of bloggers, and the bit that boggles my brain is where someone is being paid to work with a brand, and posts copy full of typos. A couple I follow are more lifestyle with a bit of fashion thrown in, and blog full-time, so clearly making a good amount of money from it, yet their posts are littered with errors. I can remember a post before Christmas where the person was working in collaboration with Twinings tea, and wrote "Twinnings" every single time she mentioned the brand name. (And yes, I suppose they could be dyslexic before anyone points that out, but surely then you'd ask someone to proof for you before hitting the publish button?)

MaQueen · 11/05/2017 14:42

crispy I think you look good in those jeans (I have them in the denim and khaki).

I notice you're wearing MF40s favourite Softy Kick in red from Topshop...? I have them in red, black and gold Blush I am desperate to buy the TS Amelie biker boots that she wore a lot back in the Winter, but don't know if I'm brave enough...

squoosh · 11/05/2017 14:49

I got into fashion blogs aged about 11 or 12

That makes me feel so old! Grin

The closest I got to a fashion blog when I was 12 was a copy of Jackie magazine.

ElspethFlashman · 11/05/2017 15:26

I only look at My Fashionable 40s, Susie SoSo and Does my bum look 40.

The first two basically dress like me. Very low key and normal. Not very exciting. A fair bit of Primark. However they are affiliated with Village handbags and MFF is affiliated with Chambers and Beau also.

DMBL40 is partnered up to the eyeballs and her style is..... interesting (stop with the awkward length trousers, I beg of you!) But her energy and enthusiasm is what gets her hits. She posts almost every day and loves it. And is an entertaining writer.

I also like her candour on Instagram. She has a kid with SN and it sounds tough. She has some really stressful days. I take my hat off to her for being so prolific tbh.

silkpyjamasallday · 11/05/2017 15:41

@squoosh I am only 22 so it's not that you're old I'm just younger than a typical MNetter! And I used to love looking through my mums old copies of Jackie magazine (she is a bit of a hoarder but has a big enough house that it doesn't show) I remember feeling quite indignant that when she was a teen she could buy a dress for £3 not realising about inflation etc.

olderthanyouthink · 11/05/2017 15:51

silk I'm 21 and I was looking as beauty and fashion blogs at about the same time as you but it wasn't as much as it it now.

heateallthebuns · 11/05/2017 16:30

I only started following the mummy and middle aged bloggers last year coz I'd turned 40 and felt frumpy. It's been great for me, I got a fringe and started wearing red lipstick and now I feel and look much younger and more stylish (imo). I like susie so so, my fashionable 40s, dmbl40 also find mid life chic a bit classic for my taste. My favourite is the fashion lift. She always looks great and mixes in normal outfits with weird ones!!!

heateallthebuns · 11/05/2017 16:31

I feel like they cater to my age group much more than magazines which I rarely buy now.

CrispyBathTowel · 11/05/2017 16:34

MaQueen the softy kicks are very comfy aren't they plus a more updated shape than ballerinas. Am considering getting the black though The Frugality was wearing a creamy white pair from Mango which looked nice but they're nearly twice the price.

I like the Amelie boots too and a lot of bloggers wear similar - they always look good but I'm not sure it's a boot look that I could pull off. Maybe this coming winter ...

Maudlinmaud · 11/05/2017 16:40

I admired your shoes too Crispy, have never seen anything similar and now I know why, I don't step foot in topshop. I may have to start.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 11/05/2017 16:54

I know a lot of successful bloggers who started out by buying shit tonnes of stuff on credit cards, taking a load of photos (about 3 months worth) for their blogs and instgrams in one day and then sending it all back. They did this 4-5 times and ended up looking like they had an amazing wardrobe but when you saw them in real life it would be same skinnies and a nice top as usual. After about 6 months of more than 500 views per day you can start to make £350 a month on affiliates and about £400-500 on Adsense. Then over 2000 page views per day you start with small sponsorships and greenies. 5000+ views a day (so still small) and you can start to look at an income where you don't need to work full time outside blogging.
None of these women were wealthy before and many used only their iPhones as methods of photography and blogging for up to a year.

silkpyjamasallday · 11/05/2017 16:59

That's really interesting @keiraknightleyactswithherteeth so these women were actively pursuing blogging as a career rather than a hobby organically becoming a source of income? I know lots of bloggers return stuff after photographing it or sell it on via their own blogs or depop but to do it purely to source products to blog about that you have no intention of using or keeping is a bit more shady.

Mrs9C · 11/05/2017 17:00

I really struggle with bloggers because of this. Such a lack in honesty of items they received for free...they get upset and cry (I've seen it) over the flack they sometimes receive, and what would really solve it is a simply "I received this for free for review" at the beginning of the post. One said that we all know Instagram is just viewing adverts, why are people complaining, we know what it is. Really? That's not why I joined. But it's what it's become, from Shark vacuums to Boden, it's stuffed with deceptive advertising that is very cheap for the brands but extremely lucrative.
