Thought I'd start a thread for anyone who finds capsule wardrobes in muted tones tedious as feck.

Ditto little diamond studs and designer bags with glossy bobs.

I personally admire the style of Alys Fowler and Helena Bonham-Carter.

Also love a bit of Gudrun/Lagenlook and other cheerful offerings.

A successful charity shop rummage is a joy to behold. I like messy hair, well -loved clothes and making my own stuff too.

Anyone else?

I have really bright red hair, proper pillarbox. Hairdresser does it every 6 weeks and I top up the colour when I wash it to keep it bright. I love it.

NevermetaGilesIlike · 28/04/2017 12:17

I love that peacock/galaxy hair thing.

At the moment I am rapidly turning white although it is mainly at the sides /front but since the rest of my hair is dark or salt and pepper at the roots the regrowth is very noticeable. Annoyingly so. It also doesn't cover unless peroxide is wanged on first. So at the moment I am considering this. If I cropped my hair to an inch all over do you think it would be doable? My hair is currently a red/brown longer pixie. I am thinking then to let my natural stuff come through. Views appreciated 🙂

I love the clog pictures by the way but am put off by the practicality side of things. Are they difficult to walk in and drive when wearing them? I particularly love them in red.

I am currently surgically attached to my very old battered converse because they are so comfortable.

Jacob, that hair is stunning and would look beautiful I think.

nevermet I love a pixie crop. I think it would nice with white hair.

It's a hair style I'd love to try. Unfortunately, I have a long nose which I'm self-conscious about and with a pixie crop there would be no way to hide it.

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 28/04/2017 13:01

Saucy how do you keep it in good condition? What do you use on it? It sounds very striking btw.

NeverMeta it has the very attractive sounding name of 'oil slick'. I like that silvery blonde colour. Would it need a lot of touching up though?

MarklahMarklah · 28/04/2017 14:12

I had galaxy hair a few months back. Right now I'm between colours but thinking of something with purple, shocking pink and lime green (just tiny slivers of the latter). Saying that, I quite like the idea of oil slick hair.

drspouse · 28/04/2017 14:42

I got some Dunlop last year to stand in for Converse but actually fit my wide feet. They were comfy but I had to throw away two pairs at the end of the season. I'll have to revisit my thread and see if there are any other suggestions.

I have a pixie cut and did have pink hair briefly but even though my shade is quite light it didn't show up.

SaucySusanVsNormalSusan · 28/04/2017 14:58

Jacob, I use a product called Osmo colour revive - I buy the bright red one and it's an excellent conditioner and colour top up. This is my hair at the moment, it's brighter in the light than this photo.

I have a longish pixie cut with blue streaks (naturally dark brown hair). I get the bleach and initial colour done at the hairdresser every couple of months and top up every few weeks with blue dye at home. I also use Maria Nila Azure conditioner which works brilliantly.

quirkychick · 28/04/2017 17:29

Oh, I think I need to join this thread. It has quirky in the title Wink.

But seriously, lots of lovely things on here. I call myself a minimalist maximalist, as I do wear neutrals (not beige!) but then wear them with touches of colour and more dramatic elements. When I had my colours done I was a natural dramatic. Today I am in jeans and a navy jumper, but the jumper has a subtle sparkle, and I was wearing red trainers, a baker boy cap, and a biker jacket.

I was into punk/goth in the late 80s, and then more hippy/alternative, which later became grunge. I think I will always have a touch of this: leather cuffs, flicky eyeliner, more rocker in winter and more hippy/boho in summer.

My once dark, wild curls are now platinum/silver as I transition, though. I might put some colours through when it's grown out.

JaneJeffer · 29/04/2017 01:14

greenglass I love all your shoes. Where are the burgundy boots from?

ChoccyJules · 29/04/2017 11:00

Ooh those green DM shoes are lovely. I'm not very good with shoes though, tend to be in boots of some description. It's a combination of needing flat and also wearing leggings a lot, so would need to be barefoot in shoes (right?).
I bought some shoes on a whim in the John Lewis sale, they are black patent flat slip-ons. Twas the patent which lured me in. Shiny! But haven't known how to wear them yet. I want to wear socks for comfort but then feel that would be wrong, when I see people in shoes they do tend to be either wearing tights or barefoot. Can I wear socks with jeans or skinnies for example? The shows look too big and boaty to wear with leggings.
Oh and after all the boots recomendations I have ordered a replacement pair of Mes2 in tan, which I hope will be more summery and my gorgeous brown patents can finally go in the bin, sob.

Theres a batshit crazy thread going on about short hair www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/2915655-do-you-like-short-hair-on-women?pg=1&order= .

Whirltime · 29/04/2017 11:09

Choccy how about wearing trainer socks with shoes you can barely see them then. Its what i do.

quirkychick · 29/04/2017 13:35

Thank you Jacob loving the clogs and dms upthread. I have Lottas as they are cheaper than hasbeens. A blue sandal pair and a burgundy classic clog pair. More for going out as they're not that easy to walk in!

I only looked at the beginning of that thread about hair... personal style should be exactly that, personal.

Greenifer · 29/04/2017 14:14

Fuck me, that hair thread is depressing. Everyone seems to think that a) short hair means you must be a lesbian and b) people thinking you are a lesbian is something that all right-thinking people would go out of their way to avoid. I couldn't give a flying fuck if anyone thinks I am a lesbian (my husband would be quite surprised, though) and my hair has zero effect on my sexuality as far as I can tell, having had it every length from about an inch long right up to almost waist length.

ThatItBe · 29/04/2017 14:35

Hello. Loving this thread.
Been on the short hair thread being outraged.

Any opinions on White Stuff? I hated them at first, got to like some bits, bought a fair few things mostly in sales and now think they've gone incredibly blah. At least in the past you could get skirts with frogs on or birds in flight but now it's all pastel linen stuff. Dammit.

Agree on Clarks. Could not find a thing I would consider buying.

quirkychick · 29/04/2017 14:59

I haven't looked in White Stuff for ages, ThatItBe

Greenifer · 29/04/2017 15:20

I used to love White Stuff and agree it is all a bit blah now. They used to have more lovely strong colours.

BroomstickOfLove · 29/04/2017 19:17

I quite like White Stuff because they are one of the few places that regularly have clothes in the sort of greyish muted colours that suit my soft, pale colouring. Which is the reason why most people don't like it. I'm not wild about the styling, but I can generally find wearable stuff there.

CBW · 29/04/2017 20:00

Bring back colour

SlipperyJack · 29/04/2017 20:24

I have a gorgeous skirt from White Stuff, probably about 15 years ago. Pencil, woollen, in a sort of overlapping woven shell pattern (small) in green shading through brown to cream. Have had loads of compliments on it, and people look surprised when I say it's White Stuff.

Oldraver · 30/04/2017 16:11

Choccy...I have bought these [https://www.sockshop.co.uk/products/pringle_mary_plain_cotton_shoe_liners/ Shoe Liners]] recently and they seem pretty good. They are cotton for my smelly feet and have grips on the heel

I've bought some cheapies previously from H+M and they used to ping off

whysorude · 02/05/2017 00:51

Like the pics NevermetaGilesIlike

I too am going grey at the front and, fed up with colouring, decided to go from just below the ear bob to short back and sides (no. 3) with a quiff on top. Best decision ever. Although it requires frequent cutting it is less faff to maintain on a day to day basis.

MeadowHay · 02/05/2017 13:03

Ahhhh I am so excited with this thread! I have found my people! Grin

Though I must confess two things that are really limiting my ability to express myself through my style...

  1. Money. I would love to get my hair done all wacky and that and wear cute and/or alternative clothes but I can't afford to Sad. I buy most my clothes from cheap high street shops in the sales. and
  2. Confidence. I see some people in proper wacky outfits and I love them and wish I had the confidence to wear them. But I'm always worried people will stare and tone down my outfits. I mostly live in t-shirts, skinny jeans and trainers. Which is comfy, but dead boring, I don't feel like it really represents me adequately.

Any tips on either of the above? I deffo need to start scouring charity shops for a start.
