I'm sorry, is it 1998?

I went shopping for the first time in ages today and these tops were everywhere. Took me right back to the 90's! I had a fine array of vest tops to put over my tee shirts but I think I'll give it a miss this time round - my very pert 34B kahunas are sadly no longer up to the strain. (Nor are they still 34B or pert Grin). Isn't it funny how fashions seem to roll back round again?

Yes to that River Island carrier bag and god did stuff last. Had a duck egg blue cardigan with collar and pockets that I spent all my wages on one week and it lasted through six form and uni and beyond. I loved a silk shirt with a short Lycra skirt. Nice

christinarossetti · 19/02/2017 21:30

For some reason, I have kept the long sleeved, low back body from River Island that I wore c. 1994.

Wtaf were/are they about? What's wrong with a tucked in top?

Kwackerly · 19/02/2017 21:34

I remember wearing black jodphurs with black rollneck and mid calf biker boots and huge white cable jumper which came nearly to my knees.

Also often went out in opaques, travel fox trainers, men's red satin boxer shorts and a see thru black t shirt with wonderbra underneath... I thought I looked so cool. I really wish I had photos!

MiladyThesaurus · 19/02/2017 21:56

I remember wearing a lot of checked trousers too. I had several pairs in about 1996 or 1997.

I went through a phase of wearing over the knee socks to school (with my short school skirt).

venusinscorpio · 19/02/2017 22:05

YY Grace, I lovingly saved any nice bags to carry stuff in.

GraceGrape · 19/02/2017 22:13

I used to love shopping in River Island when it was all done out in wood like some 19th century paddle-steamer. I'm sure that's where I bought my very best floppy velvet hats from.

QueenofLouisiana · 19/02/2017 22:18

I've suddenly realised that I still have a RI t-shirt from 1991. It's still going strong! As I'm about 3 sizes larger than I was at the time, and it still fits, I wonder how massive it was at the time!

clumsyduck · 19/02/2017 22:18

I am currently embracing this 90s fashion resurgence Grin was still a child then so I dabbled with what I could afford in Tammy girl but that's about it
No checked trousers or dungarees though , a step to far I think !
Bodies , chokers , band tees YAY

Galdos · 19/02/2017 22:18

In my experience, if you stand still you are in fashion about once every 10 years. Suits me!

clumsyduck · 19/02/2017 22:21

Ha! I think you are right galdos!

I hope naughties fashion doesn't come back in though it was boring and pretty terrible . I also refuse to give up my skinny / straight cute jeans

clumsyduck · 19/02/2017 22:21

Cut not cute

TheThickenPlots · 19/02/2017 22:55

Kwackerly I know the shop you mean in 7 dials, I had a top from there that I treasured. I also had a hideous multicolour, glow in the dark cropped string vest, that I wore clubbing with only a bra underneath and my mums old velvet trousers from the 70s, add massive platform boots and I must have looked bloody amazing. Shame there are no photos Blush

TheThickenPlots · 19/02/2017 22:57
  • should have added that the vest and boots were from Camden market so obviously had to be cool Wink
Botanicbaby · 19/02/2017 23:38

burgundy leather jacket, chunky plastic platform sandals - perfect for clubbing all weekend, chinese satin dress, cargo pants, chenille jumpers.

morgan tops with the logo and a plastic 'm' sewn into the fabric... think it was the beginning (or return) of bodycon tops?

colour block french connection t-shirts too (was that the era they rebranded as fcuk? ) which seemed very 'out there' at the time?

yes to the brown make-up. think bobbi brown was in her heyday. i remember ruby and milly make up and those cult nail polishes with the plastic rings attached to them, cannot remember the brand.

uma thurman and THAT bob, white shirt and chanel rouge noir went viral (a new word for the 90s). also kelly macdonald shiny spaghetti strap dress over t-shirt in trainspotting Smile.

p1nkflam1ngos · 19/02/2017 23:39

I did it all, and I have no regrets! Pass me my plum lip liner and some dewberry body spritz, I want to look like the Topshop fashion pullout from Just Seventeen. Where's Jason Priestley and Evan Dando at?

Graphista · 20/02/2017 00:11

Botanic you mean hard candy?

cdn-img.instyle.com/sites/default/files/styles/622x350/public/styles/594xflex/public/images/2015/02/021315-hard-candy-new_0.jpg?itok=mLMoiY7X

Yes, brown lippy and black/red nail polish

Botanicbaby · 20/02/2017 00:41

graphista yes it was hard candy, thank you!

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/02/2017 04:41

Hang on, it was an 80's revival last week, or possibly the week before, how on earth can we be on a 90's revival?

And yes it was originally just a revival of the 70's anyway, which was the decade that style forgot, so it can be safely ignored.

HappyAxolotl · 20/02/2017 08:32

Oh, BotanicBaby & Graphista, there is a 90s memory! Lusting after Hard Candy nail polishes and trying to save up for them, even though there was no stockist in my tiny town and being pre-internet having no means of finding a stockist or any way of buying them.

Of course now we'd not only be able to buy them online but we'd be able to find decent dupes for about £2.

I forgot about the hanky tops. I loved them as I was very flat-chested and had a pretty damn gorgeous back if I did say so myself. I still do so I'm hanky-ing for a re-run!

Floisme · 20/02/2017 09:13

I won't hear a word against 70s fashion. Or early 80s. I just thought we might have moved on.

Still there's one trend I'll be genuinely pleased to see again and that's a man's waistcoat: one of my favourite looks both in the 70s and the 90s. I've still got a couple somewhere but don't worry, I will wear over a Tee this time. I wish I could say I was free thinking enough to wear them when they're not in fashion but I'm afraid I just feel a bit of a knob.

Baconbinge · 20/02/2017 10:03

For all of you who remembers wearing a 'trouser skirt'.... Zara are currently sell these...

I'm sorry, is it 1998?

belgina · 20/02/2017 10:31

I had the exact same thought the other day when I was wondering around H&M. Velvet tops, slip dresses over t-shirts,... I felt like I had been transported to my teens.

SuperFlyHigh · 20/02/2017 10:51

Kwackerly I remember that top in 7 Dials and I also got a lot of my clubbing gear from there, mini skirts, rubber waistcoats etc!

We also used to go to Camden Market (when it was good) as there were a few clubbing wear stalls there.

And Hyper Hyper in Kensington High Street. I worked at an office on the same high street and must have spent an obscene amount of money on clothes.... Shock

One of our favourite clubbing combos was a pvc crop top sort of halter neck with a tiny skirt, a bit later crochet tops and dresses (Karen Millen sales) and we also loved wrap tops and skirts for clubbing in various combos.

The amazing thing was back then although you did get some who did it, there wasn't the abundance of fake tan, baking etc that there is now.

SuperFlyHigh · 20/02/2017 10:51

Top - I meant shop!
