Has the 'scarf' had its day...

I may be the last to realise but the scarf really seems to be now rather passé. I have many that I would previously throw on with a blazer, t-shirt or jumper and feel fab. Having just been trawling through pin interest, every image that showed a 30 or 40 something wearing a scarf, just looked really dated.
It was such a great, easy accessory. Now what! Interesting jewellery, bags, the skinny scarf?

Pretending I haven't seen this thread!!!

I knew it would happen one day but they hide a multitude of sins including slopped soup!! and jazz up (in my head!) a main old jumper

I ain't chucking them though - they will come back round one day!

On no - I too am.uncool and love scarves

What about adidas trainers? Are they 2015/16 too?

SealSong · 10/01/2017 23:55

So scarves are middle aged and frumpy? Well, as a middle aged frump I guess that gives me licence to carry on wearing them. Happy days.

Hohumming · 11/01/2017 00:43

I agree with you OP. My sister wears them all the time and I don't think they add anything to what she is wearing.

I went for lunch last week with an elderly relative. I wore a simple grey wool top. Just as I was leaving the house, i ran back and threw on a scarf. When I met her, she was wearing a similar scarf. She is in her 80s. In future I will put on a simple pair of earrings or bracelet to make myself feel more stylish.

I think scarves have had their day unless they are obviously for warmth or to hide a gaping neckline etc. Hush do some very nice ones but at ridiculous prices.

coxsorangepippin · 11/01/2017 01:04

I agree. But what else should I wear with skinny jeans that's a bit floppy but isn't a scarf (and isn't a tent shaped top, because I'm pregnant and loose tops don't look good)?
I can't possibly wear a waterfall cardigan instead...

KoalaDownUnder · 11/01/2017 01:18

I hate scarves, so I'm glad. Grin

They feel horrible around your neck, like I just want to rip them off and free myself.

And virtually nobody needs them for warmth here (Aus), so they're usually a wispy coloured thing tied there. Trying to look jaunty or something.

I have felt a bit left out in the past few years, due to my inability to scarf. Now I'm pleased. Smile

EnidButton · 11/01/2017 02:54

In that pic Fleur is wearing a tartan blanket scarf. They do tend tenf to be huge. Do agree about her but that's a bad example. Blanket scarves or wool knotted ones are fine. No-one is sitting around at home wearing one of those.

It's the thin, often patterned, cotton, silk or chiffon ones that we're taking about surely?

MandyFl0ss · 11/01/2017 07:27

And ponchos? What about ponchos?

cutsthemustard · 11/01/2017 08:05

It was in Paris for one day only in November and every single man was wearing a scarf. Apart from DH. I wanted to buy him one but he impolitely declined.
Maybe the law changed at midnight on NYE.

No don't tell me this! I love scarves, especially at the moment as am pregnant and all maternity dresses are designed for people with massive boobs. Mine haven't got any bigger and didn't in my last pregnancy either so I've been wearing scarves to hide the gaping neckline on all my clothes!

GetAHaircutCarl · 11/01/2017 08:34

You'll rarely see me outside without a scarf from October to March.

I really am cold blooded and always feel chilled without one.

I update them though. All. The. Time. As my credit card will attest.

I love a hat too!

Bluntness100 · 11/01/2017 08:40

They hide my massive chest and I don't have to worry about my nipples sticking out in front of a class of teenagers

Sadik · 11/01/2017 08:48

"Most of her 16/17 yo friends wear scarves."

^ This. I've got a 14 y/o, and levi jeans/leather jacket/big scarf is her staple slightly smart-ish outfit in winter time, and definitely what her more arty teen friends would also wear. I'd say right now the sort of teens who would wear DMs also wear a scarf IYKWIM.

borntobequiet · 11/01/2017 08:52

They will be back in a couple of years so if you get rid of your scarf collection you will regret it...

BitOutOfPractice · 11/01/2017 08:56

My turned-17-on-Monday and 14YO DD also wear scarves. Skinny jeans, band t short, converse, biker jacket, big big scarf. Standard teenage issue I thought

Fuzzypeggy · 11/01/2017 09:00

I think we're talking about the look that some women wear, and has been prevalent in recent years, the wearing of a colours scarf to jazz up a plain outfit. I don't think we're talking about winter scarves whoch will never be out of fashion, or what teenagers wear. I certainly think the scarf added to jeans and Breton top has died out and looks dated. This is what I for one think of on this thread.

FourKidsNotCrazyYet · 11/01/2017 09:01

Up, dressed and scarf on. I'm feeling not as confident. But am meeting other mummies so will confirm with them if I should have the scarf or not Confused

Jointhejoyrun75 · 11/01/2017 09:10

I have scarves, but hardly ever wear them as can never manage to arrange them so that they look right. I end up just wearing them slung around my shoulders with the 2 ends just hanging down my front which looks shit, or if I try and do any type of round my neck arrangement with them I end up feeling claustrophobic and like I can't breathe.

Any solutions to this dilemma? Is there a scarf arranging tutorial - sure there must be?!

Notagainmun · 11/01/2017 09:11

I am late forties and only wear a scarf on bitterly cold days. I feel like a stylish pensioner when I do.

PNGirl · 11/01/2017 09:23

Fleur the YTer has a very odd style. She buys everything in the sales or from designer outlets, then throws on a scarf, stumpifying black ankle boots, and a not-quite-the-colour-she-wanted-but-it-was-reduced designer handbag. Overly-long ratty hair which she uses as a security blanket and voila!

I only wear a scarf in winter and it's almost always grey or black and white with a black biker jacket.

BobbiTheCynicalPanda · 11/01/2017 10:43

"The kings of the silk scarves - Hermés - actually have an app on how to tie your beautiful silk scarves. I think it's called silk knots and it has options for all the different sizes "

Will check this out, thanks Choco.
My Christmas present is an Hermes one Blush.
Awful really as I know how much it cost OH and would like to find a way to wear it. Although I don't want to send a message to OH giving him 'permission't to buy me more of them!
The print is lovely. It's just the actual '200 x200 silk square ' part that's not!

Nameforsaken · 11/01/2017 10:48

I have no boobs so don't wear a bra as they're so uncomfortable. A scarf hides my nips Grin

GlitterGlue · 11/01/2017 11:05

I often wear a (non woolly) scarf for work as the temperature is often Baltic and it looks slightly smarter than two cardigans. I make no claims on being fashionable.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/01/2017 11:18

What about a scarf like this? Or do you actually have to be Audrey Hepburn?

Has the 'scarf' had its day...
