Has the 'scarf' had its day...

I may be the last to realise but the scarf really seems to be now rather passé. I have many that I would previously throw on with a blazer, t-shirt or jumper and feel fab. Having just been trawling through pin interest, every image that showed a 30 or 40 something wearing a scarf, just looked really dated.
It was such a great, easy accessory. Now what! Interesting jewellery, bags, the skinny scarf?

Getnaked, have you worked out how to tie them? I've been practicing with my monstrous Christmas gift and I just look slighly deranged in it

Floisme · 10/01/2017 22:33

This is great news for middle aged women. Scarves are a terrible look for us. They don't cover necks - they draw attention to them. It doesn't matter how many times you wrap it round, you're basically telling the world, 'Please don't anyone look at my neck!'

I hate them even more than I hate linen trousers. Which is a lot.

(Except when it's really cold when I wear one round my head like the Queen. And my mum.)

CurlsLDN · 10/01/2017 22:34

Ok, I take it back, sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone.

Can we have some pictures please to clarify what we're all talking about? Because yes I see the mythical 'young people' looking snug and gorgeous in blanket scarves for winter, but I thought we were talking about floaty 'pop of colour' scarves, like this....

To me that has always been an older lady look (not knocking it, if you are an older lady and know what suits you, go for it!)

ChocoChou · 10/01/2017 22:34

Getnaked and Bobbi.

The kings of the silk scarves - Hermés - actually have an app on how to tie your beautiful silk scarves. I think it's called silk knots and it has options for all the different sizes

Fuzzypeggy · 10/01/2017 22:35

Yes curls! Or this. I am not a fan

Grin thrilled

okok · 10/01/2017 22:37

A natty silk scarf looked ok on Lauren Bacall and Sophie Lauren. I don't take fashion advice from 16 year olds.

Manumission · 10/01/2017 22:38

That is so true ok.

Fuzzypeggy · 10/01/2017 22:39

I also agree ok, but I've rarely seen anyone who carries off a scarf as they did

okok · 10/01/2017 22:41

That's true, Fuzzy

ElspethFlashman · 10/01/2017 22:43

This is hilarious - O instantly thought of Fleur de Force on opening this thread. She has a scarf problem, seriously.

Though maybe her problem is that she's like 5'2" or something and wears 7' scarves that envelop her entire torso.

Still love her a bit though. Blush

ElspethFlashman · 10/01/2017 22:45

I mean, for fucks sake Fleur!!!

Getnakedorgohome · 10/01/2017 22:49

Thanks ChocoChou that's helpful! Bluntness mine are definitely closer to the first... does that make me cool?? 😂😂

VanessaBet · 10/01/2017 22:51

Isn't everyone younger wearing knitted ones more like this? Rather than Indian type woven ones which I have loads of but agree don't look quite right currently.

Cleebope · 10/01/2017 22:55

It's a staple of my teacher uniform every day. They hide my massive chest and I don't have to worry about my nipples sticking out in front of a class of teenagers. Couldn't give a toss if I look unfashionable! Plus they make me feel snugly.

MsGameandWatch · 10/01/2017 22:55

I don't see how scarves can be out because whenever I go into H&M there's a new range in there, I would say new ones come in every fortnight. They've changed rather than become obsolete, they're big, woollen and blankety now but they're definitely still in where I live. The thin wrap around the neck in all different styles ones not so much admittedly.

Foureyesarebetterthantwo · 10/01/2017 23:16

I don't think wobbly stomachs are in fashion, so for the time being, the jacket scarf skinnies combo will have to do. I looked on that Fleur's Youtube and in the first video, she had bought two scarves out of four items in the sales. They were really nice ones as well, and I had scarf envy.

I also think one unfashionable thing per outfit is ok, so no scarfbootlegs/fleece/mumboot combos, but if you have one of these things in a whole ok outfit, it looks fine.

polyhymnia · 10/01/2017 23:25

I have masses of the thinner ones from 'naice' places such as Comptoir des Cotonniers, Hobbs, LKB, BeckSondergaard etc. Do really like some of them, but have felt less happy about automatically slinging them on to 'complete' my outfit before I go out in the last few months. Times do seem to be hanging. May at least be more selective about whether I wear one.

Hope I don't have to give up my stripy tops too!

Have always hated silk squares.

At the other end, the 'blankety' sort of scarf will never suit me! I don't even like the feeling of any thick coarse woolly scarf on my neck when it's really cold. Though cashmere is bearable!

polyhymnia · 10/01/2017 23:26

Changing, not hanging!

llangennith · 10/01/2017 23:27

And whatever happened to pashminas?

clumsyduck · 10/01/2017 23:30

I think they are out ! Iv never been a fan to be fair but I don't see many people wearing them now thinking about

Although it's winter so massive cosy useful scarfs are in

SugarLoveHeart · 10/01/2017 23:31

Was sorting through my scarves recently & missing a lovely Pashmina I'd culled... Would have been a perfectly good "house scarf". Not sure I'd wear one out now...

Foureyesarebetterthantwo · 10/01/2017 23:35

I wear the pashminas I have as big scarves rather than the shawl style which is out of fashion. No-one can tell!

ALLthedinosaurs · 10/01/2017 23:41

Scarfs as an accessory I stopped doing in 2005 when I stopped wearing skirts over trousers but as objects of warmness I wear them all winter long. I bloody love my massive scarves that I've made myself! Am I uncool? Shall I not make the red and black stripy one Ive been dreaming of then? Blush
