Has the 'scarf' had its day...

I may be the last to realise but the scarf really seems to be now rather passé. I have many that I would previously throw on with a blazer, t-shirt or jumper and feel fab. Having just been trawling through pin interest, every image that showed a 30 or 40 something wearing a scarf, just looked really dated.
It was such a great, easy accessory. Now what! Interesting jewellery, bags, the skinny scarf?

nope, but they're still very much in contention in Shropshire, lol, everyone wears them.

I wouldn't care either way, i'm an 'alternative' type of person who lives in Lindy & leggings, I'm not giving mine up for nothing or no-one!

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 11/01/2017 12:00

I had to go back in the house yesterday to find a scarf as it was bloody freezing.

I ain't giving my scarves up for noone.

CherrySkull · 11/01/2017 12:05

exactly Exit, this time of year they're perfect, i hate wooly scarves with a passion.

I am alternating my blue one with silver snowflakes and my white one with 30's style mickey & minnie mouse and love hearts on it at the moment, they keep me lovely and warm on the school run!

i think my friends would drop dead if i turned up without one, lol, i have about 30 of them and wear them all year around (except really hot days) some of the big cotton pashmina sized ones make great shawls on nights out.

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 11/01/2017 12:07

I even have a scarf that a lovely MNetter sent me for Christmas a few years ago.

I often find random bits of popcorn or peanuts lurking in mine Blush

CherrySkull · 11/01/2017 12:13

i got stiffed by my MN secret santa a couple of years ago and MNHQ sent me some stuff to say sorry.. i still wear the scarf that was in there, its purple with white birds on :)

Nameforsaken · 11/01/2017 12:37

I must say I only wear warm scarfs, bot the silk type

Thrilled · 11/01/2017 13:24

This is the sort of thing I mean. For all the non believers, a scarf did look good without being 'middle aged' or adding a 'pop of colour' etc etc.

Before anyone tells me these photos are 20 years old, there are hundreds more examples.

Winter scarves are exempt, as are scarves needed for warmth at work or for covering clothes that do not meet, due to pregnancy.

Here's the thing.

Do you like them? If so, wear them.
Do you not like them? If so, don't wear them.

'Dated' is a merchandising construct - they have to shift stock and make a profit somehow.

Thrilled · 11/01/2017 13:35

Sir you mean we have to make our own decision?

wizzywig · 11/01/2017 13:40

Do you mean silk scarves? They always remind me of air hostesses and teachers (sorry). Or the chunky scarves? I thought chunky ones were still on trend

Nameforsaken · 11/01/2017 13:46

The Kate on the left looks fine, the Kate on the right looks dated

SirChenjin · 11/01/2017 13:47

Yep Grin

Thrilled · 11/01/2017 13:51

Sir but that's no fun. We need to talk and understand each other's feelings towards the wearing of the scarf.

name I fear both looks are dated.

i've never worn a silk square, all mine are long and thin when folded, they're all long enough to be wrapped around my neck an trail down my front, they're mostly cotton or polyester based.

BusterGonad · 11/01/2017 15:24

Did they ever have their day??? 😂

Haffiana · 11/01/2017 15:24

I am so glad that now, in my mid-fifties, I get to choose what I feel I look good in, rather than that someone else gets to choose it. The other advantage of getting older is the shrinking pregenual anterior cingulate cortex which means one is far less self-conscious or prone to caring what others think. Wonderfully liberating...

I love colourful scarves.

DailyFail1 · 11/01/2017 15:27

I don't wear scarves I wear shawls, as they tend to be more versitle and look good flung over my work clothes at lunch.

LoupGarou · 11/01/2017 15:34

Another vote for shawls, beautified warm and comfortable! I also love scarves and wear them everyday, but we live in the arctic so I'd be a bit silly to not wear one regardless of fashion, and trust me, I commit far worse fashion crimes in the pursuit of staying warm Grin

NotTodaySatan · 11/01/2017 15:38

Daily can you post a pic of what you mean by shawl?

Having visions of La casa del Bernarda Alba here.

DailyFail1 · 11/01/2017 15:53

Something like this. Love Pashminas but usually get better quality ones from Pakistani dress material shops-

DailyFail1 · 11/01/2017 15:54

I also love the blanket style ones from Monsoon.

SirChenjin · 11/01/2017 15:54

Thrilled - my feelings towards the scarf are that they are lovely things if you like them, and something to avoid if you don't.

Haffiana - I could not agree more!

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 11/01/2017 15:55

I am mildly horrified by the thought that I may be committing a fashion crime on a daily basis, but I love my scarves and have too many. I do think the skinny, pop-of-colour type ones are out, but I am clinging to my warm woolly ones.

One thing I have noticed that seems to be a trend amongst the young and fashionable is to wear a big scarf, but not to tie it. Lots of people seem to be wearing them just slung around their neck, which looks awfully chilly to me, and kind of pointless.

CherrySkull · 11/01/2017 16:22

its actually quite effective Spuriouser i generally wear mine that way, they keep the back of the neck warm, and if the front gets cold they're easy enough to rearrange to wrap around the neck instead.

Cleebope · 11/01/2017 17:08

Bluntness I have huge sticky out nipples and have bought so many bras that do not keep them hidden. Only 1 bra does this and I wear it so much that it is falling apart so if you can recommend me a brilliant high street nipple-concealing bra it would change my life. I wear scarves all year round. If I want to look sexy I leave off the scarf!!
