Has the 'scarf' had its day...

I may be the last to realise but the scarf really seems to be now rather passé. I have many that I would previously throw on with a blazer, t-shirt or jumper and feel fab. Having just been trawling through pin interest, every image that showed a 30 or 40 something wearing a scarf, just looked really dated.
It was such a great, easy accessory. Now what! Interesting jewellery, bags, the skinny scarf?

I've just ordered what I thought was a lovely scarf in the John Lewis sale. Now I know why it was so cheap....

FSVC · 10/01/2017 22:14

Scarves are a weird thing. Some people look great in them and some people just...don't.
They somehow suit me (apart from 'infinity' ones) and I have worn them for many years, but when my (much more beautiful, stylish, and quite a bit younger!) friend asked me how I managed to make mine look cool I had absolutely no idea. I just sort of fling and go. She looks like her own mother in anything but a skinny scarf, maybe cos she's more 'groomed' hair wise?
I think knowing what textures suit you helps, I suit quite floaty or chunky knit scarves even though I don't suit clothes in those textures.
It's like 'statement' jewellery, I look bloody awful in big chunky necklaces but I know lots of folk who look ace.
Black magic I tells ya!
But erm, yeah, 'baby group' scarves, where you don't like your outfit and think a scarf will 'add a pop' - don't do it! My bete noir is a scarf and no jacket. Especially when the scarf has been 'looped'.
If you've got a cold neck, go for it, if you love the scarf, go for it. If you think your scarf looks crap keep trying different ones/different ways?

ClaryIsTheBest · 10/01/2017 22:16

I love my scarves. I like a warm neck in winter :)!

leccybill · 10/01/2017 22:16

Oh blimey. I have a zillion scarves, wear one every day. Hate my long Diedre neck and hate feeling chilly.
Oh well.

Mindtrope · 10/01/2017 22:16

I have a 16 yo DD.

Most of her 16/17 yo friends wear scarves.

Seeingadistance · 10/01/2017 22:16

I'm another one who's in Scotland, and I've have hypothermia without a scarf in the summer, never mind in the winter.

FSVC · 10/01/2017 22:17

Disclaimer - I have been known to wear a scarf tied round my head, out in public, and my 'style' rule is THERE ARE NO RULES so I should probably be ignored.

Thrilled · 10/01/2017 22:17

Exit you may piss yourself laughing but you are thinking within the box. I'm not talking fat face, Boden crossbody etc silly.

Re the warmth thing though, men don't seem to suffer from cold necks indoors, to the point where they have to add a scarf to their outfit do they? Is it about women wearing wide neck tops with a lot of exposed skin I wonder.

Bluntness100 · 10/01/2017 22:19

I think it depends on the type of scarf. My daughter who is 19 wears a huge oversized cashmere one with a sort of pale check on it, it's bloody massive and she folds it up and wraps it round her neck when going out in cold weather .

However if you're talking about the silk square type thing that adds a pop of colour to an outfit, and serves no other purpose, then yes it's dated, I'm sorry. They Are very old fashioned and middle aged now.

DMnamechanger · 10/01/2017 22:19

I wear them all the time and I'm not giving them up.

I wear them for warmth mind you. Not in summer unless it's chilly which it usually is.

Buttwing · 10/01/2017 22:20

Pale grey cashmere looped round your neck once then tied loosely and the black skinny scarf (preferably with stars but the were like gold dust!) were the two scarves to have in aw16. But I say where what the hell you like!

Doilooklikeatourist · 10/01/2017 22:20

That's a relied , I am old fashioned and middle aged / old

DMnamechanger · 10/01/2017 22:21

fuzzy in addition to the different clothing styles, in general men don't feel the cold as
much as women do. Something to do with having more muscle I believe, while women have more fat.

Whatthefucknameisntalreadytake · 10/01/2017 22:21

I love a scarf, I will never stop wearing them - fuck fashion.

SugarLoveHeart · 10/01/2017 22:22

I know what you're saying. The scarf moment may be over.

I love them & have loads, for different outfits.

But I saw a lady with a stunning scarf at Christmas.

Now I'm obsessed & would bin all of mine for one fab scarf.

However, I feel like that posh scarf would be surrendering my youth...

Fuzzypeggy · 10/01/2017 22:22

That makes sense DM

FSVC · 10/01/2017 22:24

I know I said THERE ARE NO RULES, but the only person who I've ever seen get away with a neckerchief is David Essex. Even Parisians look like berks in them, and they surely don't do much to keep you warm?
My old boss once wore a hijab and two scarves in clashing patterns and it looked fabulous, you've just got to find your own thing.

shinynewusername · 10/01/2017 22:25

I thought more 30 something Parisian chic

Yes but it is impossible to tie them in the appropriately chic style unless you are born & bred a frog. It's just one of those things only French women can do, like making their DC sit quietly at restaurants without the use of an iPhone.

BobbiTheCynicalPanda · 10/01/2017 22:27

I wish my OH had seen this thread before he bought me a very expensive, very well known designer scarf for Christmas.
I will never, ever wear it.
I've even started to think very carefully about my relationship as he clearly sees me as something I'm not! Or is trying to change me into something I'm not. Shock

He told me I could exchange it but said designer has nothing else in a similar price range that I'm interested in, except perfume that I don't like.

Eolian · 10/01/2017 22:27

Whatever. Even if it is momentarily passé, it will be cool again shortly. Such is the ridiculous nature of fashion. How else would people be persuaded to give shamefully frumpy items of clothing to the charity shop and then spend a fortune buying similar but mysteriously cooler ones in a couple of years?

Eolian · 10/01/2017 22:28

Sorry, that was meant to sound mystified rather than passive aggressive Grin.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 10/01/2017 22:28

Oh shit. I'm officially middle aged.

JudithTaverner · 10/01/2017 22:28

mindtrope my 16 yo wouldn't be seen dead in a scarf!

Getnakedorgohome · 10/01/2017 22:28

Scarves being passé makes complete sense... I've just acquired several beautiful silk Scarves and I am completely addicted. To he'll with fashion, I am cosy and happy Grin
