It's English folklore.

Half mast trousers = 'has the cat died?'

I really doubt that anyone told us that Lederhosen and purple bow ties were not suitable schoolwear - I cannot recall any parental comments whatsoever - but the boy who came to my primary school wearing these items in the 1970s had a life that was a pretty hellish, tbh. Your kids are perfectly normally/trendily dressed Twiglett. YOu wouldn't dream of dressing your son in too short trousers and terrible shoes and a beige polo necked sweater tucked in, for example. The boy I saw at the Polka really did stand out, and I know kids will notice. Maybe not at five so much, but certainly at 7. I would love to dress my ds in certain clothes that I think are lovely, but I'm not going to make him stand out any more than he does already. It's not extreme - today he's wearing Sainsbury's jeans and a gap t-shirt and gap coat, and he desperately needs a haircut.

yes I think my kids wear ok clothes .. but tbh I don't really notice so much so I can get surprised to notice that DS trousers are suddenly too short.. they tend to live in jeans and jumpers .. even DD rarely gets out of trousers .. and she does have a rather eclectic sense of accessorising which unfortunately I do nothing to discourage (swimming goggles, DH's painting baseball cap, ponchos and sparkly pink bags)

I love the things your DD wears btw Aloha .. she always looks scrumptious .. I was gently joshing with the crinolene (because I remember the fab bloomers )

hello ggglimpopo .. I was just looking at my namechanging list and for some reason I have ggglimpoposgoat on it .. what's that about?

saltire · 20/02/2007 11:01

The problem i have is that DS1 is 8 (9 in a few weeks). he is also 148 cm tall, but has the waist measurement of an average 8 year old. So he needs age 11/12 trousers for the length, which are far too big on the waist. Asda, has been the only place i can get adjustable waist school trousers for him. If i got trousers in his age, they wouldn't just be half mast, they wouldbe shortsFor some reason though their other trousers stop being adjustable waist at age 10, obviously they think all boys have the same waist measurement when they reach that age.
I have bought trouser for DS1 on a friday and by the Monday they are too short

Twiglett · 20/02/2007 11:18

Aloha · 20/02/2007 12:28

Two year olds are insane tbh. The other day my dd went with me the school pickup wearing jeans, a tutu AND a new, too-large summer dress, with a coat on top and her brother's old Doodles (tricky decision between that & her brother's too large wellies)! I don't think they count in the context of this discussion. I love dressing her up though. She has much nicer clothes than I have, esp her hand made tweed coat with vintage buttons...sigh. And I was eyeing her bloomers only this morning, dreaming of summer when she can wear them again!

Twiglett · 20/02/2007 12:33

I saw a site you might like aloha .. hang on will find it

Twiglett · 20/02/2007 12:34

restitch kids' clothes

although mega-expensive ..

Aloha · 20/02/2007 12:37

Very sweet, esp the little corduroy pinafore, but as you say, v expensive! I keep thinking that I should be able to make stuff like this.

anyone else busy taking boy's trousers up? Inspired by this thread I got out ds2's new trousers - still 1" - 2" too long I think, so out comes the needle and thread.

The last pair that I took up for him were still too long and they dragged on the floor - he kept turning them up to show of my fast and dirty stitching

He is only in Reception though
