Ok, am a 40yo frump. Photo of me included.

Have booked in at hairdressers tomorrow for a pixi cut. Hair is currently past boobs. Really thick. I wear it tied back in a high pony tail all the time and need to do something as it's so boring.

So really cropped? A bit bouffant? Something in between? Or cancel the appt?

Your face is quite long and an oblong shape so I think a side swept fringe and/or shorter layers round your face would work really well. Have the rest cut just above your shoulders and you'd suit the messy/salt spray look.

I think you might regret getting it really sort. Bobs don't have to be boring.

I think bob 2 or 4 would be good. Are you in London?

Your glasses don't look that dominating to me.

If you have to wear your hair off your collar for work, I don't see how a layered bob would work Confused. It would be difficult to tie back, although it would look lovely on your days off!

Aftertheraincomesthesun · 20/12/2016 18:28

I've always had long hair. I had all mine chopped off in the summer. I have a face like the moon. It looks fabulous, despite my hairdresser saying I would hate it.

RandomDent · 20/12/2016 18:31

I think this thread probably proves that nobody really knows!

If you fancy a change go for it! I had my medium length hair cut short in the summer. I love it. I think I look younger and fresher and my hair just looks more "done". I was worried it would be a bit stark so have an asymmetric fringe and plenty of layers to keep it soft. Really nice to be able to wear earrings and them be seen too! If you don't like it it'll grow again x

CoperCabana · 20/12/2016 18:36

I think you would really suit a rockabilly cut BUT I am addicted to having my hair cut short and then growing it back. As I have got older, I have found I need more make up to pull it off and need to think about my clothes a bit more. Which is why it is currently long as I can't be arsed with all that at the moment! I still think do it though.

Are there 2 different posters here asking for advice or has the OP name changed?

doctorboo · 20/12/2016 18:38

I hope you went for it Need I think you'd look nice.

NeedANewHaircut · 20/12/2016 18:38

I do wear quite a bit of makeup for work. Have got no makeup on in these photos, straight from the gym and looking rough! Grin

You're glasses are fine, they look the same as the ones in the link Hmm
Random is right, if you want to do it go ahead. Nobody elses opinion really matters.

Deux · 20/12/2016 18:40

Possum, that length should be long enough to tie back as the sides are long.

Tell the hairdresser that that's what you need.

Please post a photo of your new hairdo.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 20/12/2016 18:41

Yes, Needa, you seem to have a sister called Possum with the same dilemma? Grin

cansu · 20/12/2016 18:42

You look a bit like me! I have come to the conclusion that whilst me hair seems a bit boring, it actually suits my face. If you want something different, go for a long bob of some kind. You could get one that is shaped so it is shorter towards the back, but I really wouldn't go for this kind of pixie cut. Agree that you need a very elfin type face to get away with this style.

I agree with others about the glasses. Yes, those styles are in and I too can only have plastic frames. But I think they look a bit too large and assertively rectangular and a slightly gentler/lighter style would be better.
On hair would definitely vote for messy, not super short bob.

CaraAspen · 20/12/2016 19:55

Your specs are cool!

NeedANewHaircut · 20/12/2016 20:34

Still undecided.

So I asked dh's opinion which is unheard of.

He said, its only hair and if I dint like it it will grow back. He likes this style in the photo. When I met him I was actually a skinhead after watching Aliens late one night when drunk......so I don't think he minds short hair. I was younger and slimmer then though.

He then asked me how I'd do my hair if I was going out in the pull. I laughed and said not like it currently is. And he agreed with me. I asked him if he likes my current hair, he said "it's ok when it's tied up and tamed but not when you've got it down".

OK, so i get you want to change your style, you're fed up with your hair as it is and you said yourself, you just tie it all back 99% of the time anyway.....DONT GET IT ALL CHOPPED OFF BECAUSE OF THIS!!!!

You have lovely long thick hair. SHOW IT OFF. Stop tying it back, and run a brush through it, style it for a week and those compliments will come flooding in. If you fancy a change, opt for a colour and at most, have a trim. Have a go with different styles, top knots, plaits etc. Yes hair does grow back, but once we hit our naughty fourties, its at a ball-achingly slow rate and if you go for a short pixie crop, it'll seem like forever.

There's a mum on the school run, she's lovely and the only one that has really long hair, its gorgeous. I kick myself every time i see her because if i hadn't messed about with mine so much with colouring and cutting, mine would be near that length now.

CoperCabana · 20/12/2016 21:00

I am mid forties and 18 months ago I had an asymmetric cut with it shaved at the back and side. It is now below shoulder length. So it may not be slow to grow back as not everyone is the same.

sarahnova69 · 20/12/2016 21:05

If you want it short, cut it short. I absolutely don't believe all this rubbish about how only models with razor cheekbones can pull off crops. There's a short cut for everyone and if you have a hairdresser you trust, he or she will tell you what they suggest for your face shape. I think you do want layers and texture.

My hair is in a pixie cut. It requires absolutely minimal daily styling - I comb it when wet and then mess it up with paste and my fingers, job done. It does need trimmed ideally every 6wks or so though.

sarahnova69 · 20/12/2016 21:07

Also I agree your glasses are too big. You can still have plastic frames, you just want ones that are a bit narrower across the front. They actually look like they sit too far from your face and slide down your nose because of this. I wear glasses too and have awesome (fairly chunky) purple Prada frames.

GertrudeBelle · 20/12/2016 21:08

Please don't do it. It may look terribly stylish in the salon but will turn into the "mumcut" once you leave.

Your hair is lovely. Go a bit shorter/edgier, but please not so short.

clumsyduck · 20/12/2016 21:12

Don't do it op !!! I would love boob length super thick hair !!

Maybe get some highlights and a decent cut and start styling it more to wear it down ??

I have longish straight hair and I sometimes think it's boring it suits me and looks nice when styles and worn down . but short really short hair does not suit me at all Infact anything remotely near chin length doesn't suit me I think you regret it !!!
