Ok, am a 40yo frump. Photo of me included.

Have booked in at hairdressers tomorrow for a pixi cut. Hair is currently past boobs. Really thick. I wear it tied back in a high pony tail all the time and need to do something as it's so boring.

So really cropped? A bit bouffant? Something in between? Or cancel the appt?

I think a messy bob would look great on you too. Leave it messy, smooth it, curl it, tie it back...very versatile. I've just grown out a pixie cut very like the one in the check shirt pic, it was easy to style BUT needed very regular trips to the salon for trims and thinning out (every 3-4 weeks) as my hair is thick and heavy, and having the same style all of the time got so boring!

ChocoChou · 20/12/2016 13:50

Longish messy bob is my suggestion OP, you'll look lovely!

Cocolepew · 20/12/2016 13:51

Urgh to a bob. Go short Smile

Gatekeeper · 20/12/2016 13:51

NOOOOO!!!!

please don't cut off your beautiful hair; I really really don't think it would suit you. You need a certain face shape and bone structure to carry it off like another poster above suggested otherwise you might end up crying your eyes out bemoaning your actions

SandwichYum · 20/12/2016 13:53

Well I think go for it, it is only hair after all!! The photo in your second post looks nice. In fact all the photos are nice hairstyles. Also your hairdresser should be able to advise and help with ideas as what will work and be easy to manage will depend on where your hair naturally lies. Thick hair is easier to manage cut short into the right style.

KnittedBlanketHoles · 20/12/2016 13:54

The fringe in Nancy's photo would suit you. I'd leave most of the length of you don't have time to faff in the morning and can't have it on your shoulders for work.

Cocolepew · 20/12/2016 13:55

If you are bored and want a restyle a bob is boring. Its just a shorter version of what you already have.
You'll be paying for a trim.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/12/2016 13:56

I had similar hair to you- naturally wavy, very thick, dark. I went to the hairdressers and told her to cut it all off. She did a lovely long bob, with a fringe. I don't regret it on a daily basis although I do miss having very long hair. But, I will say this- unless you are happy to style it every day, or at least prepared to go out 'unstyled' then think about whether you can do this. I let mine grow out enough to put up in a ponytail because I just couldn't do it every day. I need it cut more regularly because it very quickly looks uncared for if I leave it too long.

That being said, I still prefer it shorter, it suits my face, and I don't miss the hassle of very long hair (took 24 hours to dry naturally!) nothing beats that feeling of having a totally new look after having the same hair for years.

Get your hairdresser to cut according to your face rather than from a picture and be brave- even if you hate it, it's hair, it will grow back!! Post pics please when you've done it!

fledglingFTB · 20/12/2016 13:58

This? But maybe with more severe at back. I am Envy of your curls.

I get it, Needa, you want a big change. I'm like you, once I get an idea in my head, I have to go for it or always regret not trying it.

I think you can pull off a short do. I would like to see you with something along the lines of the last pic. A full floppy fringe would look brilliant on you, sort of long and side swept. Then short back and sides.

A couple of things to consider:
Short hair needs styling every morning if it has some length on top, you will wake up with major bed hair if you have a natural wave,

Short hair needs regular trims,

And of course, do you like your ears? They'll be on show.

Be prepared to be bossy with your hairdresser. Most of them get so nervous cutting long to short and will try to talk you into getting a long bob. Unless you're quite assertive and arm yourself with pictures, you'll come out with a couple of inches cut off on the hairdresser's insistence that you have lovely hair and no one will notice Grin.

Cakescakescakes · 20/12/2016 13:58

I got a bob with a heavyish blunt fringe recently after decades of long hair. I have to straighten it but I love it and the fringe has definitely taken the frump out of the bob.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/12/2016 13:59

That should say I occasionally miss having very long hair - like, once a year when I'm going somewhere glamorous.

NeedANewHaircut · 20/12/2016 13:59

I've had a longish, messy bob before and because my hair is so thick and impossible to tame it just kind of went triangular and I looked like a Playmobil person.

And treat yourself to an air styler if you do go for a bob/ inverted Bob. It makes doing the back a doddle and helps keep it manageable. I sleep with one big roller in my fringe sometimes too to just keep it in shape.

PollytheDolly · 20/12/2016 14:01

Yes don't do a bob. Just about grown my inverted bob out and is now one length past my shoulders. Never again.

Re colour, going grey too - I'm 44. But have it coloured every 4/5weeks at hairdressers but I treat it as a luxury and chill out time lol and the cost is fairly reasonable. She's self employed and works on her own.

CashelGirl · 20/12/2016 14:02

If I had straighter hair I would go for a long fringe and short at the back and sides. Then you found sty,e it up to a quiff on high days and holidays and then just have it down the rest of the time. Take advise from your stylist and pics when you are fine. Your hair looks like it would be very versatile so have some fun with it. Xx

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 20/12/2016 14:08

I looked like a playmobil person Grin

yes I always thought that when I had a bob and fringe. Bobs are hard work on thick wavy hair, they need a lot of styling or will just mushroom out into triangle head territory.

CaraAspen · 20/12/2016 14:13

OP:

NOOOOOOOOOO. Avoid a short cut.

gemm36 · 20/12/2016 14:14

I have short short hair and have done for 5 yrs I love it so simple and easy and you can glam it up if you need to.
This was my xmas hair, I live it my ds15 not so much.

ArseyTussle · 20/12/2016 14:15

That Felicity Jones photo is lovely. I definitely think something to break up the one length-ness is the way to go.

What about either of these?

HelloYellowMellow · 20/12/2016 14:17

Sorry OP but I don't think you'd suit the super short hair. I agree with a long bob/shoulder length wavy type style would look lovely and make you look much more up to date. It's less of a shock too! Although I think it's nice as it is but I get the need to have a change.

MargotLovedTom · 20/12/2016 14:36

I agree with pp that a short cut needs elfin features or it can look too Big Boo butch (had to google Big Boo Wink).

The woman in the khaki vest Arsey posted has a good style.

isambardo · 20/12/2016 14:41

I got a pixie cut a couple months ago and I love it! It is more high maintenance than long hair though, needs styling every day and I do wear more make up now to keep myself looking girly! I have thick brown hair with lots of grey. When it was long i constantly tied it in a ponytail, it was an absolute pleasure to get it chopped :)

NeedANewHaircut · 20/12/2016 14:48

How long does it take each morning to style it isambardo?

OP I'm in the "go for it" camp. Your hair is beautiful but with a good hairdresser will be beautiful short(er) too! It grows.

You should have a look a rockalilycuts on Instagram. You could pull off something fab!
