That's SO helpful, thank you!
I shall copy and take it with me!! Smile

It's so lovely that you're all so welcoming and generous with your expert advice. I have tried to keep up with the advice but failing!
Im 40 and have have dark skin with yellow undertones. Do get redness sometimes and have old scars from spots. I was getting spots before my period but have been using the LRP efflaclar wash/toner/duo every day for last few months and that seems to have stopped them. I also use miccellar water to clean makeup off before LRP effaclar wash in evening.
My skin feels dry and looks dull and wrinkled near eyes. So I've just started with the nip fab pads twice a week at night and bought LRP retinal cream and B Radiant day cream and night cream from Superdrug. Have I done the right thing??! help !

AuroraPolaris · 29/11/2016 21:14

yongian I think KIKO have one of those corrector palettes. Haven't tried it myself though.
What about just using VICHY Dermablend as a concealer? You can always mix it with moisturizer for under eye.

bo re the (wonderful) Clarins oil you recommended - it's Lotus Oil (supposedly for oily skin, I say supposedly cause I have normal-dry skin and I've been using it for YEARS) or Blue Orchid oil (for dehydrated skin).

AuroraPolaris · 29/11/2016 21:16

grew is the micellar water the only thing you cleanse with?

Pupsiecola · 29/11/2016 21:33

Very timely Vlog from Dr. Sam Bunting about skincare + skiing.

Hi No I use the LRP efflcar foaming wash. I do have an oily t zone and dry patches so guess I'm combination

botemp · 29/11/2016 21:42

Forgot to add Badders, Retinol needs to be introduced slowly just like acids. Probably only need to use it every other day, but see how you go.

Crikey, Grew it sounds like too much product tbh but it may just be the way you're describing it all at once. Can you write out your routine? Micellar is definitely not the best way to cleanse, and can be very spot inducing. See below for why neither of the effaclar face washes are ideal.

Thanks for the correction Aurora, Clarins just need to combine the two oil and call it Blue Lotus, I'm sure it'll be a hit Grin.

Arsenicinthesugarbowl, I'd advise much the same as I advised Badders at Tue 29-Nov-16 20:23:45 as you have similar issues and skin types. I think with the exception of PC BHA and the oil blends (which are hard to economise on) it's all under £25.

AM

-I'd steer you away from Cetaphil as it contains SLS and is quite harsh in that sense (but continue to use if you are not having issues with it but generally with pimples I suggest removing SLS from your routine, incl. shampoo, toothpaste, etc.) use LRP Toleriane Dermo Cleanser.

  • You acid tone after cleansing, finish up the dragon's blood pads and then get some Paula's Choice 2% BHA, try the samples from their own site. You might find the Clear or Resist version more beneficial for you than the more universal Skin Perfecting 2%. The reason you're most likely responding well to effaclar Instructions as above.
  • The Ordinary Vit C 23%, but really hold off on incorporating this till later.
  • The Ordinary HA 2% + B5 serum

-The Cetaphil moisturiser is mineral oil based, I don't think this is ideal if you have spot issues and it's not aiding with cell turnover so not the best anti-ager either. See above for suggestions or use the ED here too as it can be used 2x a day.

-SPF, as above.

PM

-Oil Cleanser, DHC Cleansing Oil, Clinique TTDO balm, etc.

-LRP face wash (the Toleriane dermo). Are you currently using the foaming gel as that's another SLS one I'd steer you away from. The deep cleansing one has a troublesome pH so I'd definitely steer clear.

  • The Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2% (2-3x a week)

-Effaclar duo (contains Niacinamide so no need to get a separate serum and pores not noted as major concern).

-Moisturiser if you feel it necessary as ED can be used with and without.

So in order, get the cleansers sorted. Get yourself a day moisturiser and separate SPF and the Ordinary HA Serum. Then the Advanced Retinoid, PC BHA, Vit C.

botemp · 29/11/2016 21:45

You reminded me Pupsie, last week's Dr. Sam Bunting's video for The Telegraph here on Hyaluronic Acid.

botemp · 29/11/2016 21:47

Sorry! Wrong one, it was onAzelaic Acid.

AuroraPolaris · 29/11/2016 21:48

grew that LRP cleanser has SLS which is stripping and harming your skin. For PM try to find a gentle balm or oil cleanser for first cleanse. Maybe Body Shop Camomile butter? I myself use the DHC oil at the moment because of bo and love it.

For second cleanse and AM you could switch to LRP Toleriane.

yongnian · 29/11/2016 21:48

Oh KIKO, keep hearing about that, thanks aurora will check it out.
Have also heard great things about Vichy dermablend but my skin is so many tones and 'colours' (redness, sallowness, purplish scars, dark circles) I've struggled to get the right coverage with even the various shades and consistencies of skin-coloured concealers/tinted foundation I have...I also have lots of dark freckles that I like to keep visible (they look awful covered anyway and they are very distinctively 'me') so never I always use a 'only where needed' approach. I like to see skin...(so long as it's looking top notch!)
Sorry, that was a long ramble about my concealer/foundation philosophy there!

botemp · 29/11/2016 21:52

I trailed off there... "The reason you're most likely responding well to effaclar is on account of a form of BHA in it. Using a BHA alongside it will see further improvement.

botemp · 29/11/2016 21:55

yongnian I think Nyx also do pots of creamy concealer and one of them is green. No idea if it's any good though.

Check out a few of Lisa Elridge's acne/redness/rosacea videos she uses the Dermablend in those a lot and her technique is very much sheer skin, heavy duty on the blemishes.

AuroraPolaris · 29/11/2016 21:56

No waaay I want them to combine both oils bo!!!!! Don't anyone dare to mess with one of my favorite smells ever!!! I'm still not over the fact they discontinued my favorite cleanser ever ShockShockShock

By the was, was in De Tuinen today and they have new soy wax candles. Very nice non artificial smells. Promptly bought the rose one (really smells like my roses) and another "darker" one which I'm burning at the mo. They r on sale at the mo - 11 euros something and grey are 30 hours.

yongnian · 29/11/2016 21:56

Hmm yes aurora I've just checked out the KIKO colour wheel corrector palette, it looks good....might try this before going the whole nine yards with make up forever.
Isn't there someone on here who uses KIKO? Or has it been recommended by you bo. Seem to remember something about it.
Colours/pigments look like they might be nice...wondering about texture..

yongnian · 29/11/2016 22:01

Will do bo like Lisa Eldridge and that's my MO too.
Yes think I did notice the Nyx corrector too when I was first looking, will re-check.

Percypig5 · 29/11/2016 22:01

I'm nearly 40 with teenage skin and skincare routine currently all over the place (so advice would be fab). Ridiculously oily in forehead, nose, chin, prone to spots around temples and blemishes pretty much everywhere (think it's mostly hormonal).

I tried coconut oil to cleanse which helped with the oil and skin looked clearer but ended up too dry so routine currently consists of simple oily skin range exfoliating wash and moisturiser. However, been using it a week and I am mega oily.

Only signs of aging are under eyes so guess I should use an eye cream.

Budget is an issue.

wageslave · 29/11/2016 22:03

Hello, I'm in need of help but not sure where to start.
I'm 49, v fair skinned and freckled, can't tan and burns v easily, never sunbathed, v sensitive - dry patches and scales on chin and on nose but also get congested pores and blackheads. I can't tolerate any sort of face wash so use a balm in the morning - if I don't use this I get v dehydrated. In the evening I use a lavender hyrdolat I got in the south of France and use it too as a spray to help hydrate.
I would like brighter looking skin and with less dehydration, but not looking as if I've got an oil slick on my face either!
The only exfoliator I can tolerate is the Clarins gentle peeling, can't use any that involve water. Can't use anything else from Clarins, all too harsh. Many products seem to burn and make me look like a tomato e.g., Liz Earle cleanser. Tried LRP efficlare duo on blackheads but this aggravated my skin too

I'd like to experiment with acids but don't know where to start- glycol is or hyralonic or something else?

Some advice on improved hydration without sensitivity, as well as anti-ageing would be great. Budget up to £25 per item. Would prefer not to use mineral oil based products too. What would be good from the TO range?

botemp · 29/11/2016 22:03

I use Kiko (mostly in summer though, the tones suit me better then) but I hardly use concealer, let alone corrective concealer not a stealth boast. Isn't the Stila one supposed to be good, well at least according to the youtube yabbers.

Are they de Tuinen own brand, Aurora even though they now go by Holland & Barrett but stock none of the UK H&B stuff? And Blue Lotus would of course be in addition to, discontinuing is evil and a damnable offence in my little Queendom Grin.

AuroraPolaris · 29/11/2016 22:04

Yeah that's what I thought yongian. It's not too expensive so not much to lose there.
I have a very very nice KIKO dark burgundy lipstick and it's pretty amazing. Extremely moisturizing and creamy for such a dark intense color and pretty good staying power (and nothing lasts on me).
Also have a gray nail polish - also very nice, though nail polish is not my expertise.

And speaking of - wanted to stress what bo wrote regarding the fact we are none of us skincare experts. We only write and advise out of our own experience, which in some cases is simply based on a lot of trial and error because many here have sensitive skin.
Remember every face/ skin is different so proceed with care, use common sense and try to get samples Wink

Pupsiecola · 29/11/2016 22:07

I've just ordered some DHC Cleansing Oil. I love the Emma Hardie Balm but the £55 one I bought from M&S mid October is about 2/3 gone. I just can't justify that price on a cleanser. Will try the oil and see how it go. The reviews look excellent.

AuroraPolaris · 29/11/2016 22:09

No no an Estonian brand called Joik

God I hadn't thought of that cleanser for quite a few months. Now I'm furious again AngryIt was the best thing ever for my skin.

AuroraPolaris · 29/11/2016 22:10

Sorry it's bo of course... it's late already GrinWink

Pupsiecola · 29/11/2016 22:12

Bo you've mentioned before that you use two different shades of tinted moisturiser depending on skin colour/season. I assume this means you tan in the Summer, but I also know you're a stickler for SPF. Can you explain please? (I stay blue all year round lol).

OP posts:
AuroraPolaris · 29/11/2016 22:13

I use the EL stay in place something something long name concealer ... in the little tube.
