Thanks for being so generous with your advice botemp. I will investigate Hylamide SubQ. I love the Superdrug serum, its one of the best products I've used, so a bumped up version of that would be wonderful Smile

botemp · 29/11/2016 14:42

The short-ish answer:

Hylamide has hydration as its focus, then fermented ingredients, then peptides (but it uses the pricier ones for anti-ageing, eg. copper and a more advanced version of the 'ordinary' Matrixyl). It also contains Salicylic Acid which makes it slightly more interesting for combo/oily but normal/dry should fare fine with it.

Buffet has peptides as its primary focus (as mentioned on the previous thread the science behind it is not as 100% sound as one would like) and uses a whole lot of different forms rather than a targeted few, then hydration, and little to no focus on fermented ingredients. It also has Urea in it which makes it slightly more interesting for normal/dry but combo/oily should also fare fine with it.

There's more to it but in brief, SubQ contains a few more expensive targeted ingredients presumably at higher concentrations, is slightly more interesting anti-age wise but I think in use they will be very similar unless you respond especially well to certain peptides and/or fermented ingredients.

AuroraPolaris · 29/11/2016 14:45

The Hylamide eye serum is a good enough serum but I wasn't super impressed. I received it as part of last year's BF offer. Moreover it has a silicone and I think it gave me tiny spots around the mouth (as I always tap the reminder of my eye cream around my mouth).
Interesting to compare those ingredients to the TO new eye serum...

Why don't you look into the Caudelie Plyphenol15 eye cream? That has matryxil 3000 I think. Don't have time to look it up now but can do it this evening.

botemp · 29/11/2016 14:49

To avoid confusion. SubQ mentioned in my last post is regarding the facial serum vs. the Buffet facial serum and was in response to Lotta's question as to whether the more basic TO HA serum was worth pursuing with dry/dehydrated skin.

The SubQ Eye Serum suggestion was more in reference to fine lines around the eye area needing to be 'plumped' up but I questioned whether HA alone would do that with the SubQ eye serum, Aurora.

Dulcimena · 29/11/2016 14:53

Super helpful as always botemp - thank you for the explanation. I noticed the salicylic in the ingreds list after I had posted, that's something I tend to not get on well with so I'll stick with Buffet I think. For now, anyway... :)

JustGettingStarted · 29/11/2016 15:57

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. I don't use glycolic acid twice a day. I travel for work a lot. I use the night time serum when I am away and the pads in the morning when I am home. I do a glycolic product every day, though.

My skin is pretty average. The odd blemish on my chin before my period (I only get those rarely do to birth control). I'm 47. My skin is pretty good. Used to be more red but I quit drinking and that is better. The standard fine lines around the eyes.

I'm happy with my skin I just want to know what to get to maintain it if I get fed up with Olay.

I think I'll look into the Niacinosomething booster, then. Then leave everything else as it is for now.

Pupsiecola · 29/11/2016 16:16

Pupsie where were you able to order it from pls, for future ref?

Dulcimena · 29/11/2016 16:51

Oh and if anyone's looking to buy the Sub Q face serum thingy, it's on offer at £19.99 in store at Boots, the £14 deal is OOS on boots.com.

Badders123 · 29/11/2016 16:51

Hello!
I'm new to skincare (I'm 44 and I know I've left it far too long!)
I used to use Liz Earle but they changed the formulation and it burns now Confused
Anyway, I currently use lush ultrabland cleanser, Nivea toner and Nivea moisturiser
At night the same but added advanced night repair by Estée Lauder
Dh is getting me some new skoncaremfor Xmas - what are he views on Ren?
I am hoping to get some tomorrow so.l I need advice asap! Grin

Pupsiecola · 29/11/2016 16:54

Thanks for name change MN :-)

Dulci I ordered it from Efmedispa. They didn't ask me anything! £8 postage but I can't get to London easily.

Dulcimena · 29/11/2016 17:07

Oh that's good to know Pupsie, thank you. Buying it at Liberty's took much longer than necessary, just one chap doing highly involved 1:1 skin prescriptions/sale pitches - it was quite an experience watching him work for half an hour.

A quick question for P50 users - how long do you wait after using it before moving to the next step of your routine? Do you wait at all? I was thinking about pH levels mainly.

botemp · 29/11/2016 17:47

Badders, sorry but what does " skoncaremfor Xmas - what are he views on Ren?" mean? Are you looking for advice for yourself or you want to get your DH things? Personally have not been impressed by much from REN, I think it was new and exciting once in the skincare world but a lot of brands have surpassed it now somewhat. Feels a tad pricey for what it is and contains a lot of potential irritants for some. The Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask is very nice though, the name's a bit deceiving as it uses fruit extracts rather than straight up glycolic (it does contain lactic acid though) but for those of us not a great fan of straight glycolic that it works out quite well.

I think I need to draw up a standard form for these type of questions:

Skin type:

Approx age (range):

Primary skin concern:

Routine:

AM

PM

Occasional treatments:

Things I've tried in the past with disastrous results:

Things that are really working well for me now:

Any dietary/health concerns/pregnant:

What I'm willing to spend on a single skincare item: >£10, £10-20, £20-50, £50-100, no limits.

I specifically [want help with/am looking for a product to/am curious about trying]...

Please do remember none of us on here have qualifications for any of this, we can only advise on what we would do in a similar situation bearing in mind your specific sensitivities/needs. I personally don't comment on Retin-A use as that is a prescription medicine which should be monitored by the medical professional dispensing said prescription.

Dulci, I wait about a minute but usually because I'm mucking about tossing out the pad or choosing that moment to brush my teeth. I don't really subscribe to the wait time mantra, I've not seen strong enough evidence for it (that isn't anecdotal) and when I have tried it found it made absolutely no difference.

The knowledge you ladies have wows me!

Bo can I fill in your questionnaire?!

Dulcimena · 29/11/2016 18:45

Thanks again Bo. Good to know it wouldn't make a difference either way - time is precious!

Cherryburn · 29/11/2016 18:48

Quick question for all you skincare gurus...can I use P50V and Pestle & Mortar Superstar retinol serum on the same night? Have just started using both separately and have experienced no problems so far. Is it ok to use them together? Thanks!

botemp · 29/11/2016 19:11

Biologique Recherche advise against using P50 with Retinols, Cherry. I'd caution against it since they're both new to your routine despite the P&M being a somewhat gentle Retinol and alternate for now. Let us know how the P&M Retinol serum works out for you as I've been eyeing it Grin.

Storm, go right ahead, just use the updated version below, just realised info on whether someone wears makeup is worth knowing too.

Cherryburn · 29/11/2016 19:45

Thanks Bo. Will let you know re Superstar!

botemp · 29/11/2016 20:23

Badders, below is what I would work towards (unless any product isn't agreeing with you currently finish it all up first, no need to go out and buy it all instantly). Go one at a time introducing things gradually. Start with SPF, cleanser, moisturiser. After getting those sorted explore the other products, spaced two weeks apart, evaluate efficacy after six.

Routine for sensitive combo-oily, with dehydration (?) targeting enlarged pores and ageing.

Core actives:

  • Beta Hydroxy Acid for pore tightening, oil and sebum control.

-Hyaluronic acid for dehydration (possibly in combination with peptides and fermented extracts for further anti-ageing boost).

-Vit C for collagen production, melanin inhibiting, and facilitating healing post inflammation and breakouts. SPF and Retinol booster.

-Niacinamide for pores and skin tone evening/brightening.

  • Retinol for anti-ageing and pores.
  • SPF for anti-ageing and protection.

AM:

  • Lose the ultrabland, it's a far too heavy a cleanser for the morning. Relegate to nighttime for now (consider an alternative as I've heard this is quite a difficult product to work with and cleanse properly). Consider something like LRP Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser here in its place.
  • Nivea Toner really no need for a toner here provided you have a well performing cleanser. I'd toss this out (assuming it's the Nivea Visage Daily Essentials Refreshing Toner) it's an old school alcohol laden nightmare that does nothing beneficial to your skin.
  • Vit C serum, beyond its textural issues The Ordinary Vit C 23% is a worthy contender.
  • HA serum, Hylamide q10, The Ordinary Buffet, Superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating Serum, etc.
  • Nivea Q10 moisturiser, not the most exciting moisturiser in the world with a few ingredients that not everyone will like (silicones, fragrance, parabens) but mostly the obsession with Q10 is a bit overrated. It's a good antioxidant but it's not the most exciting one out there. A regime with Vit C, Niacinamide and Retinol will do more for anti-ageing than Q10 on its own. Alternatives to look at, LRP Toleriane Fluide or Face Theory

-!SPF!, you really need to get a separate SPF in here if you're getting serious about anti-ageing ingredients and/or acid toning. Beyond that SPF is beneficial on its own for anti-ageing and most importantly preventing skin cancer. SPF 30+ in winter and SPF50 in summer. The SPF in your moisturiser is sorely insufficient. LRP Anthelios or Biore Aqua Rich UV Watery Essence are good contenders for daily wear year round (but the Biore less so on hot holidays).

PM:

-Lush Ultrabland (or an alternative version of a balm/oil cleanser if preferred).

-LRP Dermo Cleanser if wearing SPF/Makeup

-Acid toning. Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid. 2-3x a week. Introduce gradually, you may find using it daily works best but start with 1-2x a week and build up gradually.

-Estee Lauder Night Repair Eye, if you like this and the normal serum it's fine. Somewhat overpriced for what it is, mostly a suped up HA serum with a lot of fermented ingredients and some peptides (TO Buffet and Hylamide SubQ have a similar profile ingredient wise). There are various Korean versions that are more affordable and eye creams that do various things depending on what you desire from it.

-Estee Lauder Night Repair Facial Serum, consider swapping this out for The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% and TO Advanced Retinoid 2% using an HA serum from the AM here too if you feel a need for added hydration (the Niacinamide serum does contain HA though so not likely).

-Moisturiser, as above and consider an oil blend to boost the 'basic' moisturiser a bit for nighttime (and to massage with). Clarins Blue Lotus Oil, Pai Age Confidence Oil, and various others that have been discussed in thread one, this would be one of the last things I'd look into buying although it does make for a good Christmas present but considering the investment sampling and knowing your skin well by this point is the way to go here.

An incidental clay mask (1x a week) from Cattier will help with the pores (the pink or white one).

REN as mentioned before there are not many products that I have been wowed by. Hollin likes the Omega Serum which is somewhat oil like.

Nip + Fab are acid toning pads (mostly, it's a brand but these are the ones people usually refer to), come in Glycolic (AHA) and the Dragon's Blood pads contain BHA. I've never tried them myself due to alcohol and fragrance issues but they are very well liked, they are not excessively strong but will suffice for most and are quite affordable. I think PC is a better pick for BHA personally (based on formulation and efficacy) and find nothing really surpasses BR P50 on the AHA front but many will have differing opinions on this.

Fun as an advent calendar sounds trying out a lot of different skincare all at once often ends in tears... Also, brands are uninteresting as such, most only have a few standout products so one product says very little about the next within the same range. If I have to make an estimated guess I think you would like the EH cleansing balm in place of the Lush Ultrabland but it can be irritating so it's not one I recommend universally. I'd be cautious about Alpha-H Liquid gold on account of sensitivity, it could cause a reaction as it's quite full on. Beyond that there's not much of (skincare) interest in that calendar.

yongnian · 29/11/2016 20:24

Hello everyone on spangly new thread.
Well, I've sat on my hands for too long now re buying new skincare (I bought loads of stuff back end of summer which I've been feeding into my routine)....but the time to restock is nigh!
Here is my finalised list (just in case anyone's interested and because I want to type out the list and stare at it in anticipation )

For info, for any newcomers, I have rosacea, hyper pigmentation, and a tendency to seborrhoeic dermatitis in eyebrows, eyelids and forehead, which is worse in winter. This list is to address those issues (apart from the HP which am dealing with via Vit C).

Paula's Choice Calm 1% BHA
The Ordinary Azelaic Acid
The Ordinary Niacinamide
Bioderma SPF 50 spray
Moogoo Irritated Skin Balm

Might also go for LRP Rosealiac AR.

In other news, I've switched my vit c use to PM now, after struggling with it balling up and after reading the post on here. However, for the first time this morning, my SPF is still balling up...think it's because it's straight over the top of hyaluronic acid. Will try a layer of something else in between to see if that helps. I'm also coming to the end of my LRP Anthelios SPF 50 so I might try their emulsion formula instead, see if that helps.

The list above is only my 'before going to France' list....there will may be a French pharmacy list too...

Interesting the comparison between Hylamide Sub Q and TO buffet - I've been thinking that fermented ingredients might be good for me, as have read they help with inflammation....so thinking about that too.

yongnian · 29/11/2016 20:35

Oh, incidentally I'm also coming to the end of a frankly fairly rubbish green corrector by Barry M. and will probably toss it in the bin before finishing the last bit as I've now completely lost the will to live with it
Any recommendations? Might go for something more concealer weight as the Barry M was very siliconey and had too much slip which seemed to dissipate the green effect once on.
Have been looking at the Make up Forever concealer palettes as I also have dark under circles and hyper pigmentation scars and they have palettes which have all relevant colours. Bit pricey though. Anyone recommend them? Or something else..?

yongnian · 29/11/2016 20:38

Oh sorry for the multiple posts, totally sleep deprived. The other reason I'd like something less silicone-y, more creamy/stiffer is because I need something to carefully use over my red 'stains' from seb derm...but they will curl up and die if I put silicone near them so need something more moisturising.

Arsenicinthesugarbowl · 29/11/2016 20:57

Bo Can you offer a skincare novice any advice?
