Botemp(how on earth do I highlight names??)....ha ha ha how dare you ask for a pic I know u will be asking for my bank details next Wink
Yes I have had allergy tests (food) and I'm fine. I haven't had skin allergy testing but if I'm honest I think my sensitivities are my own fault, I am naturally sensitive as I'm a fair redhead and I know perfumed products and lots of essential oils irritate me and I know if I use oil based products it annoys my skin, however since I became a qualified beauty therapist years ago I started trying everything and anything and never used anything long enough, I was changing weekly and I became obsessed with finding the next product to make me feel happier about myself (I have body dismorphia, with my face more than body) so all I see when I look at myself is horrible skin and am constantly looking for skincare that will make me look in mirror and think I look ok. I don't know what "normal" is

pupsicola hello has this worked?? I'm so thick Grin

BadgerIt · 07/12/2016 10:38

Skin type: Dry and uninviting.

Approx age (range): 28

Primary skin concern: irritable skin that seems to be resistant to products and makeup, things sit on top and slide off. Spots on chin under the skin. Itchy eyes. (3 things sorry).

Routine : You binned all but two of the things in my routine Grin I have bo approved Lush Mask of Magnamity which I use to wash in the evening and a coal soap for the morning. My moisturisers have now been binned.

Makeup : I wear heavy coverage 5 days a week (ELDW). Open to changing this too.

Occasional treatments: I use Paula's Choice BHA weekly treatment once a week and PC retinol once a week on a different day. Pixi Glow now binned.

Things I've tried in the past with disastrous results: I tried to build up tolerance to retinol and no matter how I tried to space it, my skin was left raw. Once a week is the only way I'm left without angry skin.

Things that are really working well for me now: Nothing Sad Will be getting a sample of Kiehls as recommended.

Any dietary/health concerns/pregnant: None

What I'm willing to spend on a single skincare item: up to £50.

I specifically want help with: Getting rid of the angry skin look I have going on right now and getting my makeup to sink in properly.

Badger

Just for clarification I did not approve the mask of magnaminty, just pointed out it's a clay mask so you didn't need to go out and buy another one. As a daily cleanser I'm not a fan of the thing, and even as a weekly mask I'm a bit side eyeing it as it's a physical exfoliant but full disclosure when I was having similar issues I was also using a physical exfoliant (a very gentle one) in the hopes it would slough off some of the toughened stance my skin seemed to take but it was pretty ineffective. I'm probably going to have to ask you to repurpose this to the body or something... The short version of it is physical exfoliants are quite damaging to the skin therefore chemical exfoliants (such as AHA and BHA) are preferred.

The charcoal soap should probably also go... it's better suited to acneic oily skin, I get why you bought it but it won't be doing much for your dry skin.

Which leaves you with nothing... oops... so we're starting from scratch.

First off I'd have your hormone levels checked as my skincare archives keep track of my PCOS things too as they're quite closely related, and I had very similar issues, subcutaneous spots, easily irritated eyes, and the skin barrier you could throw anything at and it would just laugh back at you. At the time my testosterone levels were through the roof (I wasn't quite a man but it was 2x as high as it should be, and I had to have a lot of tests done to rule out cancer on my adrenal gland - not saying this is the case with you but it's the first thing they look at with high testosterone levels, in your case it may just be the BC causing an imbalance) and that actually makes sense as testosterone encourages thickening of the skin and bloody hair loss, pimples galore in the chin and jaw area, and unwanted hair growth on the face

Where'd you get the BHA Weekly treatment from? As far as I'm aware it's not available in the EU due to regulations restricting BHA at 2%. Also why are you using the PC Retinol? It's a good one but it's very strong, you're a bit on the young side to start with anti-ageing on retinol, was it bought out of desperation to deal with the blemishes? Also think the BHA 4% is a bit much and you'd benefit more from a lower strength that you can use more often.

In terms of routine let's get the basics done first:

Keep your face away from the shower water, it's too hot. All skincare happens at the sink, including cleansing. Tepid water, clean flannel every day. Wash hands before starting routine. Acids need to be introduced slowly, some purging may occur but should not continue, nor should continued irritation with any product. Generally (hard in your case I'm aware) introduce products slowly (cleansers are exempt from this), 2 weeks apart.

AM

LRP Toleriane Dermo Cleanser

On alternate days Paula's Choice BHA 2% Skin Perfecting Liquid on the chin area and nose (?)

botemp · 07/12/2016 11:50

Jo, what would I want with your bank details, I'm going to be rich off my ass from just posting your pic on the front cover of the Daily Mail Grin.

Ah so you really have a compromised barrier as a result of personal mixology. That's a tough one to tackle especially with the dysmorphia to go with it. I'm always hesitant to recommend things for you since I know so many things trigger you, just wondering if you've ever used things high in ceramides as those are barrier restoring?

hollinhurst84 · 07/12/2016 12:24

That spreadsheet is fab! I'm going to google some of them
In non skincare but pretty goodies news, I ordered two makeup geek highlighters from beauty bay yesterday. It's been 18hrs and they have arrived ShockShockShock

BadgerIt · 07/12/2016 12:50

Wow! Thank you so much, this is amazing!

I will get everything you recommend and crack on with my new routine immediately (seeing as though I have nothing left that is bo approved Grin).

It all makes so much sense for it to be hormone related as it did come with the change of pill, unfortunately this pill is now regulating awful periods and bloating (after a long awful period of trialling other pills) so I guess it's a case of choosing which is worse, the rubbish skin and thinning hair or constant bloating and period pain Sad I will go get my levels checked though. I had great skin throughout my teen years and early twenties.

SPF and me always had a good relationship up until recently. I've tried gentle versions but it irritates my eye and chin area so I tend to just rely on the spf contained within my makeup, which I know is useless.

I'm going to follow everything you've said and then come back here in a few weeks with the best skin ever Grin Grin

Thank you so much, it is incredibly kind of you to take the time to do this. Flowers

BadgerIt · 07/12/2016 12:52

Oh and as far as I'm aware I didn't do anything illegal to get my hands on the BHA weekly treatment. I had an online consultation with Paula's Choice, told them my skin problems and they recommended these products.

That says 10% on the BHA. The print comes off very easily Hmm

BadgerIt · 07/12/2016 12:54

Woops just seen it's AHA not even BHA. Good lord I'm bad at this!!

Dulcimena · 07/12/2016 13:10

Quick update from London before I forget everything. Was busy so no pics and I didn't play with everything!

Eyeshadows - the sparkly ones were pretty sparkly. Nice creamy texture. Pigmentation was muted. Rather typical Japanese ime. Brun noir however was awesome - it almost appeared like a brown blue duochrome (although it isn't) and was Sheeny rather than sparkly. Reminded me of a more sophisticated version of mac's blue brown pigment, if that means anything to you? I personally thought that one shade was the stand out, no other shades wowed me. Nice texture but probably not worth a trip to London for Grin

Blushes looked nice, didn't play with them as someone else was. Also couldn't see brow stuff. I liked the nib of the refillable liquid eyeliner (fine brush rather than felt tip) but the actual eyeliner wasn't as dense on my hand as I'd like. Shame.

Lip crayons looked quite paintbox-y, I think you'd need to see them in person as they all looked quite bright and "strong", so no room for shade error really.
The lipsliques were as expected, maybe a bit Sheerer. I bought eglantine a rose shade and darker than I thought I wanted (I was looking at gamine online).

Eyebatons looked quite cool but I'm sure you can get similar from kiko? Loads of empty palettes in stock.

Think that's it!

Sorry for typos....

Stuckinstressville · 07/12/2016 13:24

Hello you wonderful knowledgeable MNters. I need HELP! My skin is suddenly dry, dull, fine lines, tired and tight - i looked like i have aged in the last 6 months... now i am pregnant i need to do something or my skin will define me...as old puffy and sad.

Skin type: Dry once i wash, oily sometimes, acne on cheeks, chin nose, btn brows, in brows, hairline.

Approx age (range): 33/34

Primary skin concern: glow. i need some please :) and routine ideas. I am a bit hit and miss/throw products at skins and freak.

Routine :

AM :Avène Cleansing Foam 150ml did use some strong EUcerin stripper but reaslied i needed something more gentle.
Estee Lauder Reslience something eye cream
La Roche-Posay Hydraphase UV Riche 50ml as my Simple Riche stuff was not helping the dryness.

PM :Avène Cleansing Foam , Micellar stuff for makeup removal/get my makeup off. then Protect and protect inteses night cream.

Makeup : Laura Mercier Candleglow ( need thicker to hide the blemishes and not dry out. not sure i like it.) skin flaky and dry, it doesn stay on. so i then plaster on a pressed powder by Bobbi Brown

Occasional treatments: Nip Fab Night Peelpads or scrub... 3 times a week. Some Vit C serum from amazon i thought i would try as have alot of scarring from spots. Origins drink up or out of trouble when i have time.

Things I've tried in the past with disastrous results: oh the list is endless, mainly as i veer to extremes...Murad i think worked well then i got pregnant first time... and poof dry sore skin. Clarins, Clinique, DErma logica, tried them all.

Things that are really working well for me now: nothing really!

Any dietary/health concerns/pregnant: newly preggo. ( 8 w) and 14 month old.

What I'm willing to spend on a single skincare item: eg. >£10, £10-20, £20-50, £50-100, no limits. no limits as i cant bare the aging look

I specifically [want help with/am looking for a product to/am curious about trying]: selecting cleanser and moisturizer... and up for serum.

Stuckinstressville · 07/12/2016 13:25

oh and majorly hypothyroid... which is a new thing.. sorry!

botemp · 07/12/2016 13:28

Thanks Dulci, that Brun Noir sounds very exciting then, the other shades I was interested in were just base colours so fine if they're not outstanding and I quite like the muted pigmentation of the Japanese formulas. Cult Beauty just needs to get their stock sorted now (Liberty charges insane delivery costs)...

Yeah I figured the eye batons while useful would be something other brands have too, so lip crayons in person, lipsliques probably ok to buy blind. Thanks so much, all noted in my little archives Wink.

If it's the 10% AHA that makes more sense Badger, just lay off it whilst you do OBP then and if you liked it you could then reintroduce it after but I still prefer P50 Grin.

In my case the hormones issues triggered a lot of free flowing/falling androgens levels (translation error may be at play here). The scientific studies on it are limited yet very promising, but spearmint (not ordinary mint) has helped with this for me as the testosterone lowering medication had worse side effects than the testosterone so was advised by my doctor that it's probably better to leave it and monitor the levels instead with the hopes it would resolve itself. I drink two cups a day but you can get it in supplement form I believe, but get the levels checked first.

I think Snow White and the Asian Pear also did a post once on NW or NC 15 BB shades, Hollin, though not sure if you're into those.

botemp · 07/12/2016 13:35

x-posted with stressville, I'll get to you later tonight.

Others can chime in before hand, especially on the pregnancy and hyperthyroid front as I know this makes for quite specific issues.

Aside from the things generally advised not to use in pregnancy (like Retinol) are there any further ingredients you're limiting like AHA, BHA, etc?

hollinhurst84 · 07/12/2016 13:51

I've actually found my favourite BB cream Grin which I adore - dollish veil vita in purple
Amazing coverage and perfect shade for me

MintyChops · 07/12/2016 16:38

Wilting thank you so much for the link. I just rang them this minute, asked if they sell BR products and could they post them. No problem, they were delightful! So I ordered the P50w. I didn't even have to answer any questions I may have implied that I have used it before.

I love this thread so much, I am ashamed to say that I have only just realised that I need to wash my own hands before washing my face. God, how disgusting I have been. I do use a clean facecloth every morning and evening (4 for €1.25 in Ikea!!!)

Indecisivejo · 07/12/2016 17:40

bo (I'm still a little excited I know how to do this now Smile) yes I am a tough one aren't I and it's all my own bloody fault. I'm not sure about ceramides not sure if I've used anything with them in (I'm useless lol) would that kiehls overnight mask work for me too? And the pai oil? I'm wary about oils though I seem to get tiny whiteheads whenever I use anything containing any form of oil!

Indecisivejo · 07/12/2016 17:43

I always seem to get an oily sheen on my skin even though I don't have a typically oily skin

BadgerIt · 07/12/2016 19:04

That's it, come on bo pack your bags and come live with me. You've introduced more organisation into my life in 24 hours than I've managed in 28 years.

Thank you Flowers

botemp · 07/12/2016 19:10

The Superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating Serum has a lot of ceramides but since you've mentioned trying a few HA serums with adverse effects I assume this is one of them.

Wouldn't rec the Kiehl's peel for you, it's silicone based and if you had trouble even with jojoba I'd steer clear of the Pai oil too.

Do you have an oily sheen if you don't put anything on there too? Might just be that your skin doesn't need as much oil there so it isn't fully absorbed, hard to tell really I need pictures Wink.
