Hi everyone. Can anyone tell me why my skin likes the hylamide sub q serum but every other HA serum has either caused a reaction or dry tight skin?! Why is the hylamide different?? Just curious

whyistherumgone · 02/12/2016 17:59

bo yes everything £1 sorry! I was quite surprised to see it in there.

Ordered my LRP derma cleanser as recommended up thread and biore watery essence want them to hurry up!

Anyone tried the skincare brand Nourish?

Pupsiecola · 02/12/2016 18:07

Can't remember who asked but the EltaMD has no white cast.

Been out all day. Went to the cinema. Needed to escape. Literally and figuratively.

I looked for the Una Brennan mask in Boots but no luck. Didn't think to look in Poundland.

I second clean hands and clean daily flannel. I use a fresh one each morning for Toleriane cleanse. Then I wring it out and put it on towel radiator to dry. Use it again in the evening and then is goes in the wash. They get washed with the towels at 60 degrees with no fabric condition. I get my flannels from The White Company.

I'm also careful not to put my face in the water in the shower (I like my showers hot!).

Bo - I have nip and fab extreme, bliss or clearasil acid pads Grin
I remove balm with a flannel so a little exfoliation but not much

Pupsiecola · 02/12/2016 18:22

Another tip from me is keep all eye products in the fridge. I also keep Vit C in the fridge to try to preserve life. And I have recently moved most products (not cleansers) out of the bathroom and into a drawer in my bedroom, having done some research. SPF is still in the bathroom cabinet too - not sure if I should move that or not.

pupsie that was me asking about the white cast, thanks. Good to know Wink

JustGettingStarted · 02/12/2016 19:34

Could someone concisely explain the difference between BHA, AHA, and Glycolic acid?

And what are peptides? Are there many types and I ought to be looking for particular ones?

Pupsiecola · 02/12/2016 19:47

Of course it was yong. I like the product. I prefer it to the LRP one I've been using. I still like the Neostrata tinted one and I use that alone quite a lot if I don't want to bother with SPF + tinted moisturiser.

EnidButton · 02/12/2016 19:50

Marks & Spencer do really nice flannels. Thick, white and fluffy, £2.50. I have a basket full of them in the bathroom. Also I use a separate towel for my face that I change daily and I change my pillowcase every other day. All the little things add up and really helped my acne prone skin.

No spots atm btw which is amazing. Really like the Kiehl's micro peel.

Pupsiecola · 02/12/2016 19:52

What do people think of the Clarins self-tanning drops you add to your own moisturiser? I used them this Summer and quite like them. I especially enjoyed the lack of soggy biscuit smell!

AuroraPolaris · 02/12/2016 20:04

pupsie glad you escaped the house! Hope things are better...?

Hollin I also think you could benefit from some oil and maybe a hydrating spray after cleansing? Then on days you are flaky you can just spray (also over makeup) a few times a day.
Was actually looking at the Benton Aloe Skin Toner spray since we talked of Benton bo, those ingredients look very good, as do the ones of the fermentation essence -a bit like the snail/ bee but with galactomites.

Also saw posters announcing a new Primark store in A'dam Dam that I think opened yesterday.

I don't use primer regularly but I do have the Clarins Beauty Flash Balm which is pretty amazing and the Hylamide Photo something (BF offer last year ;) which I use on cheeks even without foundation or anything, just with cream blush for that undetectable no makeup "glow".Grin

hollinhurst84 · 02/12/2016 20:10

I have some Sunday Riley Artemis oil and a hydrogel spray so will add those!

AuroraPolaris · 02/12/2016 21:19

hollin you seem to have a product for every eventuality in the skincare cupboard of doom Grin

Indeed my skin did not like the Anthelios. I think I tried all versions when it came out. But... my skin is, for some reason, very reactive to SPF. This year I got spots from the AVENE SPF that I'd been using for years????
I think that when we go on holiday my skin also reacts to the different water. Last winter we went to Cyprus and I could really smell the chlorine in the water (in the shower) and lo and behold after a few days out came the spots and it took my skin a few months to go back to normal (something minor that I'm sure I was the only one to notice, but still shows that many many things can play havoc on ones complexion).

botemp · 02/12/2016 21:52

wilting, my sunscreen acts as a primer, it has enough silicone slip in it to do that quite well. I like the Laura Mercier hydrating primer but rarely wear it, can get a bit too glowy if you use that as well as a dewy foundation so you need to powder with it (I use LM translucent) but at least it stops you from sucking all the moisture out of foundations.

jo, I don't know what else you've used but if I have to guess it's probably the different weights of HA and that it actually penetrates. I've used HA products where it ended up sitting on my face and caused reactions as it had nowhere to go. Or, presumably, the HA molecules were too large to penetrate and instead pulled out all the moisture from within to the surface.

I keep confusing Nourish with Estelle & Thild, rum, as they look so similar and are both natural-ish brands. I'm all for natural/organic brands but they have their limitations, especially on the hydration and actives front. Most use rather simplistic formulations based on alcohol (cheaper and easier to make up the cost of the raw ingredients to remain somewhat competitive) so not the greatest if you experience that as drying. If they're selling it at Poundland it might be of interest though Grin.

What'd you see Pupsie? I never go to the cinema anymore but I've been wanting to see Nocturnal Animals and I'm sure it's worth seeing on a big screen so I can drool over the interior porn. I thought UB was exclusive to Boots? Don't tell me now that I'm trying a bit of it and liking it, it's not for sale anymore Shock.

JustGettingStarted, Glycolic is an AHA. Extract from older thread:

Acid toning: The quickest way to kick start your skin again, caution is warranted. Slow and steady is the way to go here, introducing it once or twice a week and building it up to a point that feels comfortable for your skin which can be anything from twice a day to once a week/fortnight. AHA helps break down dead skin cells and encourages cell turnover, revealing more 'youthful' and radiant skin. BHA works deeper down as it is oil soluble and is good for cleaning out pores and with spots. There are more types of acids and both AHA and BHA are far more complex than described but this is their basic setting. I would only suggest incorporating acids into your routine when you have your basic setup of cleanser - (serum) - moisturiser - SPF in place. If you can't commit to daily SPF and regular top ups during the day in the height of summer do not bother with acid toning, it makes the skin photosensitive, you will only damage and worsen it if not diligent with SPF post acid toning.

Peptides were covered at length in the previous thread, but have a read through here and www.paulaschoice.com/cosmetic-ingredient-dictionary/definition/peptide.

I'm going to sound like I'm obsessed with Primark even though I can count on one hand the times I've been in there but I really like their luxury flannels, very cheap and have survived washing well. I don't think I dare enter the one on the Dam, Aurora, I find the The Hague one overcrowded enough! It's not much of a store of interest to me anyhow, I usually only venture in there as someone has raved about something, which in my case were the lipsticks (still need to buy that nude one), the flannels, and the weird toothbrush-like makeup brush. Also been meaning to get the baby Beauty Blender dupes, supposedly better than the originals.

I had looked into the Benton galacto black line, I think the essence was more interesting than the moisturiser. No snail though iirc, but I liked the sound of it as a day serum.

Due to my odd colouring, I only really like the Vita Liberata tanning system, it's not orange and looks really natural and has absolutely no scent. James Reed overnight mask was okay too but a pain to fit into my routine as you're supposed to use it on its own but it really lacked the moisture and occlusiveness I needed at night. Clarins was not flattering on me at all, and it reeked.

I half suspect Hollin's cupboard of doom is a tardis! I also did not react well to Artemis, are you safe to use all the products of your emergency kit?

Ok finally getting to Boglin next. I'm still waiting on Storm to answer the additional questions and then I think I have covered everyone, right? Let me know if you've done the questionnaire and I've somehow overlooked you.

hollinhurst84 · 02/12/2016 21:56

I've also found a full bottle of 3w clinic Aqua glow mist BlushBlush
Don't ask about makeup. You could do your entire face from my collection even if you wanted a "purple eyeshadow with duochrome and gold glitter"

hollinhurst84 · 02/12/2016 21:56

Oh and yes, some are used, some not tried but the Artemis is fine on me with a few drops in moisturiser

JustGettingStarted · 02/12/2016 21:57

Thank you Botemp! Now I know what to order from Paula's Choice! (I didn't know where she put her Glycolic)

AuroraPolaris · 02/12/2016 22:22

Oh I also want to see Nocturnal Animals. I looooved A Single Man. Don't go to the cinema too often anymore either, though I did see a beautiful film in IDFA last weekend.

Seems Hollins cupboard is a bit like Mary Poppins' bag Xmas Grin

Yeah to brave Primark on Dam one would have to take some kind of tranquillizer beforehand... not say this weekend just before Sinterklaas.

botemp · 02/12/2016 22:52

Boglin

Well considering you hardly wear any makeup and no SPF if all you're using the face wipes for is to remove eye and lip makeup it's not all that damnable of an offence, but you really do need to be cleansing at night. Far more important then than in the morning.

Are you oily with blemishes, or are the blemishes occasional/time of the month related?

I think aside from changing up a few products to more gentle ones and including an SPF you should be looking towards a BHA for the oiliness and blemishes. Probably the Clear Anti-Redness Exfoliating Solution 2% Salicylic from PC (get a travel size version first, introduce it slowly and probably move it up to using every day). In contrast to the AHA (glycolic) you're currently using this will penetrate deeper and help dissolve the impurities (thus reducing blemishes) and clean out pores which will hopefully inhibit some of your excess oil production. I do think it's worth keeping an AHA in your routine to help with the healing and recovery with blemishes.

Have you ever tried LRP effaclar duo? Think it might be worth incorporating for you too, using it in place or with a moisturiser. By the looks of it the Vichy detox is a similar product but the LRP has a better formulation and better reputation with acne suffers.

So in terms of routine, as discussed here today: daily clean flannels (and use a washing powder that won't irritate, no softener, etc.), washing hands before starting your routine, entire routine at the tap, avoiding putting your face near water during showers, changing your pillowcase more often if necessary, etc.

AM :

Cleanse (Burt's Bees Soap Bark and Chamomile or L'Oreal Skin Perfect gel) I'm not sure which L'Oreal one exactly you're using but it doesn't look great so I'd repurpose it, I suggest putting in the LRP Toleriane Dermo Cleanser here, the BB isn't totally awful so I'd finish that up initially.

tone ( L'Oreal Skin Perfect or Nip and Fab Glycolic Fix ) Again rid yourself of L'Oreal, it's an old school harsh toner with a lot of alcohol in it, it's not doing you any favours by stripping your skin further back only to encourage your skin to produce more oil in response. I'd use the N+F at night instead, especially since you're not using any SPF currently. Insert the PC 2% BHA here in place.

serum (superdrug hydrating one) As an oily person it is good you're tackling the dehydration so keep at it, possibly consider the TO HA + B5, though the reviews on this are mixed I do think for those with oil issues it's a good match.

moisturise (an oil free neutrogena one), consider the LRP Effaclar Duo here with or without the neutrogena. LRP Toleriane Fluide also an alternate moisturiser worth considering in the future.

SPF, Biore Watery Essence would be my first pick for you, LRP Anthelios Fluide SPF50 otherwise.

PM :

Don't shoot me but face wipes continue using the face wipes to remove eye and lip makeup and insert an oil cleanser here, DHC Cleansing Oil is probably a good one for you.

LRP TDC (BB's while you finish it up)

then tone - as mentioned above use the N+F Glycolic here if they work for you. It's probably over budget but I would consider getting the Biologique Recherche P50 lotion as it's very good for those struggling with acne/oil control as well as being beneficial anti-ageing wise. It slays spots like nobody else ime. Use it about 2-3x a week, perhaps in your case a bit more often (but you have to build up to it) and start on the P50W version.

serum as above, - you can consider inserting TO Advanced Retinoid 2% here at some point but get the basics sorted first. TO Niacinamide 10% will also help with pores and reducing inflammation. Retinol I would use alternate on nights, glycolic/AHA one night, retinol the next.

Garnier miracle sleeping cream, nuxe huile prodigieuse or vichy night detox As above consider inserting LRP ED here with or without LRP TF. You could also opt to use Cerave PM Lotion (instead of LRP TF) which has a high % Niacinamide in it (4-5) and not get the Ordinary version (though I prefer that one).

So in order of priority, grouped together to buy in different stages. Introduce slowly and spaced apart (w. exception of cleansers) into your routine:

Phase 1

SPF
Oil Cleanser
BHA
LRP ED

Phase 2

LRP TDC
TO Niacinamide 10%
BR P50W

Optional/consider in the long term

TO Advanced Retinoid 2%
TO HA 2% +B5
LRP TF

Hope you're able to understand it all, let it digest and feel free to ask where it isn't clear.

botemp · 02/12/2016 22:55

I loved a single man too, such a spectacle for the eye, and the rest was nice too and NA is supposed to be even more impressive and a feast for the eyes. From the few things I've seen so far the makeup and clothing look second to none. Sigh, why must all things Tom Ford be so expensive? At least going to the movie is affordable Grin.

EnidButton · 02/12/2016 23:12

I have finally got around to buying LRP dermo cleanser, tolareine fluide and cicaplast b5.

Used EH balm to take off make up, had a shower, then used the lrp cleanser. Initial thoughts are that I like it although there was some stinging where I've removed facial fluff earlier today but that's only every few weeks so should be fine.

Teeny bit of the cicaplast over Vichy hydra serum on my nose only. Wanted to use it on a post spots dry patch on my jaw but see it has Shea butter in it so exercising caution.
Not using the fluid until tomorrow as it's the first time using the cleanser.

Pupsiecola · 03/12/2016 00:04

I saw Allied. I have an interest in WWII. It was a beautifully shot movie and the story was interesting. I love movies. But don't go much since having the kids. Tend to do more box sets these days.

Yeah that looks like a good film. MC is pretty amazing.

BadlyDrawnBuoy · 03/12/2016 11:42

Hope you don't mind me reposting this - it got lost upthread and I'd really appreciate your thoughts / advice. Thanks!

Great thread! I'd welcome some advice please to improve my routine:

Morning: hot cloth cleanse with cetaphil; apply Vichy aqaulia serum followed by dermalogica ultra moist, LRP sun block

Evening
Dermalogica pre-cleanse
Hot cloth with cetaphil
Superdrug simply pure hydrating serum
Dermalogica active moist

Every other night I apply tretinoin 0.5% after the serum, followed by moisturiser. My skin gets a bit flakey. I've tried nip & fab pads but I think they make it worse. Should I be using something else? Also, the LRP sunscreen is better in summer than winter so any alternative recommendations gratefully received!

yongnian · 03/12/2016 12:42

pupsie is the elta md cream...or fluid...or something else?
aurora I am starting to wonder if I get on with anthelios too..but there are other factors that could be at play, so hanging in there for now.
