In honour of bo who has been so helpful on the first thread, which can be found here...

Thanks botemp for answering my question, you seem to be one of the very few who actually respond to most people rather than just ignoring and making this thread feel very clicky. Thanks again.

Pupsiecola · 03/12/2016 15:10

indecisive I don't often respond because I'm a newbie with all this stuff too. There are others far more experienced re skincare here and whilst I read every post I don't feel confident enough to answer specific questions. I'm still learning (I also enjoy reading the answers by those in the know). Sorry if you've not felt welcome.

badly I have no experience with tretinoin or when it should ideally be applied in your routine, but if you scan this thread you can see that a few of us have already warned about Cetaphil or any other cleansers containing SLS for that matter. LRP Toleriane would be a much better option or the BS Camomile cleanser if you prefer a balm.

Again, don't know about prescription retin-A but as a start try not to use the acid pads on the same days. I know prescription retin-A can be very drying so why don't you try an oil at night after your cream or mix it into the cream if you are afraid to apply oil. You haven't said anything about skin type and concerns so it's a bit hard to recommend an oil. Again if you read through this thread and the previous one there are a lot of good recs!

Indecisivejo · 03/12/2016 17:18

Thank you pupsiecola

OpenMindedSceptic · 03/12/2016 17:21

pupsie off topic but do you know any WW2 documentaries/movies that are suitable for kids (8y) DC1 really into it right now Confused

Pupsiecola · 03/12/2016 18:00

Indecisive I went back and searched your threads. I feel the same about the HA but I've only tried one (Indeed Hydraluron). I have the one you like down on my list but as bo suggested I'm going to go without for a while and see how I go...

Open that's a tough one. DS1 studied it and read The Boy In the Striped PJs last year, in year 8. They also had a holocaust survivor come in to school to tell his story. I asked if I could go and listen and they let me. It was an honour to be there. We took both DS to Berlin 18 months ago and took them to various museums. Some were obviously deeply upsetting. I have read some excellent books about the Holocaust but they wouldn't be suitable. Let me have a think - I do recall there may be one I did read which was excellent but obviously still very upsetting. I am actually going to Auschwitz in February; I have felt the need to go for many years and am going with a like minded friend.

I must admit to not having read this thread or the other, but, I would love some advice. If I may describe my skin?
I'm 49; dry, flaky and red forehead, which goes down to my middle brow area. Either side of my cheeks (nearer to either side of my nose) is red and patchy. I accept that I'm approaching an 'age of change', but I've tried numerous products that make zero difference to my skin. TIA

botemp · 03/12/2016 18:38

saythatagain, I suggest you RTFT and the previous one and see your GP to make sure it isn't rosacea.

badly, I have little to add to Aurora, whoever is prescribing your Retin-A should be guiding you on its side effects which I suspect are causing your flaking issues. Wrt SPF, without knowing what's not working for you with the Anthelios in winter it's hard to suggest an alternative.

Sorry if it feels clicky jo, it moves quickly on here now and then and some of us now know each other better than others from the first thread. I try to keep it as inclusive as possible and get to everyone but sometimes it happens that questions get overlooked or are difficult to answer directly.

Open what aspect of WWII is he into? My uncle is a bit obsessed with it but more the battles, strategies, espionage, etc. I think there's a comic strip that focuses on the espionage and is educational at the same time, I'd have to check if it's available in English. Of course Anne Frank's Diary is mandatory reading here and read at quite early ages.

yongnian · 03/12/2016 19:40

Sorry jo and anyone else feeling ignored, I'm another who is only just learning about my skin-type/care and don't really feel qualified to answer some of the detailed queries on here, particularly in the light of some of the really knowledgeable posters who go the extra mile to answer people's questions.

AuroraPolaris · 03/12/2016 19:48

Was also going to say The Dairy of Anne Frank.

AuroraPolaris · 03/12/2016 20:01

Yes, jo, like we mentioned upthread no one here has professional knowledge, just their own experience, trails and fails. So sometimes I/we might not know how to answer or what to recommend and like bo pointed the thread is moving very fast and I know I don't always have time to read everything in detail.

bo what is the name of the comic strip? DS1 might like it, and god knows I'm always trying to make him read more....

yongnian · 03/12/2016 20:50

In other news, I've had a proper go of my stila colour corrector palette, under daytime make up. And the majority of my recent haul has arrived Grin
So, the Stila: obviously first proper go, so technique will need refining but I'm pretty chuffed with the result. Just as an overview, I have very yellow-toned mixed race Asian skin, quite pale in Winter, to deep tan in the sun. I have dark circles, purple hyper pigmentation from spot scars, redness from rosacea and seborrhoeic dermatitis and can look quite sallow. So there's a lot to cover, hence me plunging for a good quality corrector palette. However, I like a very very fresh looking base - I like to see skin. I have freckles I don't want to cover and I have very strong features that don't need much to make me look dramatically over-made up.
So I'm not using this palette under a strongly made-up look (I never go out at night either, so sadly don't do nighttime make up anymore). It definitely would lend itself to a strong look, if you wanted to do the whole contour thing - the difference it made once I put my usual combo of Sephora tinted moisturiser/Sonia kashuk concealer as and when I need it, was pretty good. There are a choice of some of the colours depending on fair/medium and dark, and this actually needs mixing to get something right for my skin colour, so needs tweaking but will come good with practice. There are also two powders, a yellow and a lilac, both of which worked really well. It also made the rest of my make up 'pop' properly. I like the texture, it seems to sit well.
So overall, on its first outing, I am really happy with it and think it will continue to be even better, once I've got the hang of it properly. What's great as well is, because of the range of colours, it will cope really well with the large fluctuations in my skin tone and colour.p, throughout the year.
Of course it also helps that my hyper pigmentation is so much less noticeable due to my recent skin care efforts! Grin
Of the other products that have arrived, I've been good and only tried the Irritable Skin Balm from Moogoo. It's the first priority anyway for my current biggest skin issue.its much lighter than I expected and will see how it fares overnight as I usually have some irritation in the am.
I might sneak in my camomile konjac sponge tomorrow, should be ok.
Will be trying a couple of other things on the back of my hand later, keep you all posted.

Indecisivejo · 03/12/2016 20:58

Thank you all and my apologies, I'm in an irritated mood so prob over reacted a little.

Pupsiecola (I still can't figure out how to highlight names lol) I tried indeed labs hydraluron and returned it! I did not like it at all it felt tacky and made my skin feel even more dehydrated!

Indecisivejo · 03/12/2016 21:03

Can I also just recommend dermalogica ultracalming cleanser to anyone looking for a very gentle but thorough non irritating cleanser. I have the most ridiculously sensitive reactive skin and have been loyal to this cleanser for years.

Pupsiecola · 03/12/2016 21:29

Yellow Star by Jennifer Roy is the book I was thinking about. It's written from a child's perspective. In theory it's suitable for KS2 upwards, but it would depend on the child. I would probably read it with the child..

I know we've moved on but can I just add that I don't have an effing clue what I'm doing with my own skin Grin so can't advise anyone else yet but I try to chip in with little bits if I spot something I might know. Really have never meant to make anyone feel unwelcome. The more the merrier, then we can learn from each other hopefully. Smile

I'm still getting my basics worked out atm so whilst I know what doesn't work for me personally, I don't know the science etc behind a lot of the acids yet. I have some to try thanks to kind people on here and hopefully moving on to those next week. I'm one of the learners basically.

EnidButton · 03/12/2016 21:47

Jo Thanks for that recommendation. I'll pass it on to DH. His skin gets sensitive around this time of year because of the cold I think.

AuroraPolaris · 03/12/2016 21:47

Can't remember who asked about the Clarins self tan the other day??
I never use self tan on my face but have used the Clarins one on my body. It's pretty lovely in terms of colour (in spite of the strong smell) but don't know if it really justifies the price. I used a lovely Bioderma self tan this summer. Was quite subtle, but enough to enable me to bare my legs outside the house in a skirt Grin

Also can't remember who wrote they bought the Bioderma SPF 30 spray - wanted to say that this is not a proper SPF but just a great option for midday top ups in warm weather. When I bought it in a pharmacy in Paris this spring they warned me about it!

botemp · 03/12/2016 22:12

Aurora, I can't remember the name of the one I was thinking of but others to look at are Haas (about the Dutch resistance), Airborne 44, and De Nachtuil. Think Airborne 44 should be available in other languages (I believe it's originally French)

I was just browsing the bookshelves and accidentally came across Maus by Art Spiegelman, don't know how age appropriate it is but I think that was also turned into an animated film.

The Stila sounds exciting and now I want it, yongnian. So it works well with lighter bases? I always assume the heavy duty coverage and colour correcting products are to be used with full coverage makeup which I'm not a fan of for me, like you it takes very little product for makeup to be prominent or at least in my head.

I've mentioned it before (not on these threads, but jo and, I despite having similar sensitivities to ingredients, have completely opposite reactions to the same products, we both hate Clinique though Grin) but the Dermalogica ultracalm range really didn't work well for me (I believe due to the citrus extracts). Was a real shame since the SPF is a lovely texture but broke me out horribly and the ultrasmoothing eye serum had me in tears for days despite only trying it once. I've had better luck with their other ranges (the age-resist mostly) but find it far too expensive for what it is but it is often one of the few brands some people can only use. Their facials are very good too.

Enid why not get DH to try the LRP Toleriane Dermo first, or are you unwilling to share Grin.

OpenMindedSceptic · 03/12/2016 22:14

Bo he likes all the facts, enjoys reading about The Blitz, D-Day, Alan Turing. He knows about The Holocaust but not all the harrowing details yet. The comic strip you mentioned - is it called Maus? I've come across this on amazon but struggling to find if it is age appropriate. Think I will order it and if not suitable I can keep it until he is old enough.
pupsie thank you. I also feel the need to visit Auschwitz (isn't that strange!) and also hoping to do the D-day beaches next year or so.

Apologies everyone for thread hijack!

OpenMindedSceptic · 03/12/2016 22:14

X post bo

UntamedShrew · 03/12/2016 22:29

I've just spent an hour reading and re-reading this thread, thank you all for sharing your knowledge. I feel like skincare has moved on so much and it's hard to keep up, especially without a scientific background.

I'm skincare obsessive but feel like I've totally lost my way lately. I stopped buying lots of over-priced space-nk Brands when we had to tighten our belts massively (DH made redundant) and when I then realised the ingredients were often snake oil anyway, felt turned off from the whole industry. I've ordered and just started using a few TO bits to try and get my skincare mojo back but would welcome any advice, on that range and more generally as it was all a bit confusing... that's how I found this thread, too.

Am using the questions below and hope it's ok to ask for help! Thanks in advance, this must take up lots of your time.

Skin type: dry/ dehydrated. Never get spots. Fine lines especially around eyes. Prone to dullness. I've a thin face and feel I look haggard sometimes.

Approx age (range): 40

Primary skin concern: fine lines and looking knackered

Routine :

AM :
Bit of a splash in shower,
TO vit C serum (dislike, may give making my own another go with a Reddit recipe as TO balls up),
Olay regenerist unscented serum,
eucerin cream,
biore watery essence SPF

PM :
Emma Hardie balm,
alternative nights retinol (was skinceuticals, just started trying TO 2%)
and other nights Olay serum then TO Argan oil

Makeup : eg. no/light coverage/medium coverage/heavy coverage
Just a bit of bronzer usually and a shitload of eyeliner / mascara

Occasional treatments: I wish

Things I've tried in the past with disastrous results: rosehip oil gave me a hairy face!!

Things that are really working well for me now: love the SPF. Also love a clarins facial fake tanner for whoever was asking that upthread.

Any dietary/health concerns/pregnant: none

What I'm willing to spend on a single skincare item: eg. >£10, £10-20, £20-50, £50-100, no limits.
No more than 40-50 on any single product and would like to have some sub-£10 in there eg cleansers if possible.

I specifically [want help with/am looking for a product to/am curious about trying]: acids. Have never found one that worked for me. Have tried pixi, nip/fab, first aid beauty.
And retinols that don't cost a fortune.
And anything I'm missing really to get better results...
not asking much, am I?!

Thank you for reading, if you've made it to end of this!

botemp · 03/12/2016 22:32

I'm the Queen of Deviations and I did warn it would happen Grin.

Can I ask why you feel compelled to visit Auschwitz? WWII is much more of a present thing here, Amsterdam especially since it has a somewhat lively Jewish community (though minuscule in comparison to what it was) and we have less of a connection to WWI the way the British do as we weren't involved.

I visited Buchenwald as a late teen/early twenties and it was absolutely stomach churning, it's a very odd thing to do (it feels very voyeuristic but necessary in a way), I can only imagine that Auschwitz is even more harrowing.

EnidButton · 03/12/2016 22:43

rosehip oil gave me a hairy face!!

Shock Omg is that a thing?! It gives me cystic acne.

bo Oh yeah, that would make sense. Xmas Grin

Pupsiecola · 03/12/2016 22:49

I have long had an interest in WWII bo. My grandad was a tank driver stationed in Belgium. I have read a lot of books about the Holocaust over many years. I have always been drawn to stories about the strength of the human spirit. It's hard to put into words and I've recently understood that some of it is to do with my own childhood. With regards Auschwitz I just feel I need to go and pay my respects. I do expect it to be utterly harrowing and it's why I haven't gone until now.
