Do people still wear dressing gowns?

Do you wear a dressing gown? I feel like people don't anymore. I was thinking about what I wanted for Christmas. I have an old one on the back of my door but it isn't a nice colour or cosy so I don't wear it but would I wear one if I had one?

Yes! It goes on as soon as we are all in for the night. Fluffy for winter and satin for summer.

FurryLittleTwerp · 24/11/2016 23:09

I have a lovely thick long hooded White Company winter one & a lovely thin long Cyberjammies summer one. Lovely. Grin

NotAMammy · 24/11/2016 23:31

I walk in the door on an evening. Take off my coat, switch on the kettle, put on my dressing gown. If I've worn a skirt for work I might take that off as well.

This might change (probably won't) when we have kids or have more than a 0% chance of people visiting our house.

I normally get myself a new pair of PJs, a pair of slippers or slipper socks and a dressing gown for Christmas.

bummymummy77 · 25/11/2016 01:07

Everyone in the US calls them housecoats and I HATE it.

QuinionsRainbow · 25/11/2016 10:15

Defnitely dressing-gown people here. DH and I each have three, light cotton for summer and when travelliing/visiting, medium weight for the cooler months, and even heavier white fluffy towelling ones that DSIL gave us one Christmas which are cosy to wear but b*ggers to keep clean, and which spend most of their time in what we laughingly call the "guest bedroom" (a.k.a. as DS1s room). When do we wear them? Most mornings, as we tend to have breakfast before getting showered/dressed for the day, most evenings for the last couple of hours before going to bed, and when nature calls in the middle of the night if DCs or visitors are around (no en-suite and sleep nude).

KikiNeedsABroom · 25/11/2016 11:05

Yes but not often. All 4 of us have them and children tend to wear theirs more.

shovetheholly · 25/11/2016 12:26

I do. But - verging on heresy -I have been wondering whether it wouldn't be better to have a shorter jacket-style one and PJ bottoms.

BarbedBloom · 25/11/2016 12:56

I do, I wear them to and from the shower and in the winter while lounging around.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 25/11/2016 14:19

Yesyesyes! DH bought me a gorgeous deep red fluffy one from La Senza just before I went into hospital to have DS1. That was 10 years ago and it's still lovely and soft and thick. I love knowing I'm in for the night and being able to put it on.

Givemestrengthorwine · 25/11/2016 15:26

I wear mine whenever i am cold. In the mornings, when i'm home from work with my pj's on and anyother time i fancy! Fluffy, warm and cosy! Xx

I have a lovely M&S one with cashmere in it. I love the feel of it and it's light and very warm

viques · 25/11/2016 15:35

Have to have a dressing gown, used to watch Downton purely for the dressing gowns, the delicate silk, the manly frogging, be still my beating heart....

I like to read in bed and have discovered that the best thing for keeping my arms toasty and still being able to turn pages is to have my dressing gown on ,but, here is the secret, BACK TO FRONT on top
of the duvet. Easy to slip off when ready to turn the light off but snugly snug for reading.

In fact, why am I telling you lot my discovery, I should be marketing my own brand of erm , Personalised Reading Gowns. You can laugh, those people who invented slankets made a fortune.........

WouldHave · 25/11/2016 15:36

In this weather it goes on first thing in the morning. It's not glamorous - my MiL gave it to me - but it's definitely warm. At night I sometimes use it like a slanket, i.e turned back to front with my arms through the sleeves so I can read in bed and keep the bit of me that's not covered by the duvet nice and warm.

blitheringbuzzards1234 · 25/11/2016 15:37

Yes I love my dressing gowns, a pale grey fleecy type floor length one for winter, and a lightweight white one for summer. I put them on as soon as I get out of bed whilst I prepare stuff for breakfast etc and change out of them as soon as I'm washed and dressed.
I only ever wear them during the day if I'm feeling really poorly - too ill to bother.

80sWaistcoat · 25/11/2016 15:40

30% off dressing gowns in M&S at the moment. Just bought a lovely fleecy one as my summer cotton one is too cold and DH is getting annoyed at me borrowing his.

Have it on the floor by the bed to minimise cold air time in the morning.

PapalYoungPretenderMortificado · 25/11/2016 15:41

I have a big fluffy red dressing gown that I wear in the winter - it is lovely! [smils]

ohtheholidays · 25/11/2016 15:42

Yes and I get a new one every year for Christmas and we buy all of our 5DC a new one each Christmas and I buy my DH a new one every Christmas.

They're lovely to have especially this time of year, there's nothing nicer when you've had to get out of a lovely warm bed than being able to slip on a lovely warm and fluffy dressing gown.

ChocolateWombat · 25/11/2016 15:43

We all wear them in this house.
When you get out of bed on a cold winter morning, even with the heating on, it's not as cosy as being in bed....until you put on your dressing gown.

For me, right to the floor is the way forward. I love a proper 100% cotton towelling one - bit heavy, but therefore warm. I always have one from The White Company. Not keen on the fleecy polyester ones, which whilst light are a bit....sweaty....in my experience.

Def don't think dressing gowns are out of fashion.

expatinscotland · 25/11/2016 15:47

I love mine! Classic white terry one from IKEA.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 25/11/2016 15:51

I have a soft fluffy deep red one from M&S and I love it.

Kikibanana86 · 25/11/2016 15:52

I don't have one and I don't like them. I dont really have pjs either! I have leggings and tops or jumpers that I wear as loungewear but mostly I just wear normal clothes and sleep naked!

diddl · 25/11/2016 15:55

I rarely wear mine.

Tend to get up, shower & get dressed.

waitingforgodot · 25/11/2016 15:55

I have a full length one from white company with a good. I love it

ChocolateWombat · 25/11/2016 15:55

Oh and DH wears his, often over his clothes if he's working at home and the heating isn't on. It looks like a smoking jacket because it's a sort of maroon colour. Always makes me laugh, especially if he open the door to the postman wearing it over clothes. Nothing more warming or providing so much cover as a good dressing gown,
