Do people still wear dressing gowns?

Do you wear a dressing gown? I feel like people don't anymore. I was thinking about what I wanted for Christmas. I have an old one on the back of my door but it isn't a nice colour or cosy so I don't wear it but would I wear one if I had one?

Yes, I love them! I have:

Slightly ratty fluffy fleece one for mornings

Full-length doublefaced flannel from Toast, for spring and autumn

Cotton towelling for after shower / bath

And have most recently treated self to this which is warm AND presentable, to wear in the evenings over pyjamas and jumper.

I don't put the heating on so need more than just a hoody. I prefer to get my cosiness from clothing rather than radiators. Nothing nicer than that snug, wrapped-up feeling.

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 24/11/2016 13:59

Yes!
I have a fleecy one for the evenings, a towelling one for post showers and getting ready and a lovely lightweight cotton one from Sainsbury's for warmer weather. I wouldn't be without them.

bummymummy77 · 24/11/2016 14:03

I have four.

My towelling one for when I'm out of the shower.

My grubbyish one for slobbing about downstairs.

My posh one for when I feel miserable and need to perk myself up (also want some of those ostrich feather mules me Mam had when I was a kid Grin).

One that's a cover up I don't mind getting stinky to use on the way back from the sauna so the neighbours don't have to have intensive therapy for the next ten years.

FreeButtonBee · 24/11/2016 14:04

I have a lovely rose coloured one from the white company for winter with nice deep pockets and a hood. Gets put on first thing in winter/cold days/when sick. I rarely wear it in the evenings for some reason. I'd rather wear a jumper or cardi, even if I am in Pjs or scruffs.

I also have a summer weigh one - carolondon.com/department/c/kimono-robes - which I also love. great when you want to sleep in skimpy pjs or nightie and need to cover up once the pesky kids wake up...

NapQueen · 24/11/2016 14:06

I have a fluffy one for post bath before bed time in the winter.

I have a thin cotton Cath Kidston one for when I'm getting ready for a night out.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 24/11/2016 14:57

Yes!!!

ChinUpChestOut · 24/11/2016 15:21

I have a pale yellow towelling one which DH and DS (17) seem to take turns in nicking. I however have a bright blue synthetic towelling one which can give me little shocks if I move too much on the carpet. I love it. In the pocket I keep a small stuffed rabbit that my DM made me when I was 6. I'm 53 now. Every now and then when I'm wearing it, I just hold the rabbit to make sure he's OK.

WalterWhitesNipple · 24/11/2016 15:49

I'm ashamed to say I own 5 Blush

Being in my dressing gown is my happy place.

mumofthemonsters808 · 24/11/2016 15:57

I could not function without mine, it's one of my favourite items of clothing, I love having a bath and wrapping it around me.I thought everyone owned one, my kids love theirs too. I did laugh though when I heard the word housecoat used to describe my dressing gown, I'd not heard this word for years.Get one immediately, you don't know what you are missing.

snowinafrica16 · 24/11/2016 16:50

yes I can see myself having a 5 dressing gown problem one day when you consider that you need different dressing gowns for different occasions and seasons.

Momentumista · 24/11/2016 16:53

Absolutely, I love mine.

I bought this on sale and it's ace.

bummymummy77 · 24/11/2016 17:59

I'd like I need another one with short arms so I can wash up in it and not get irrationally angry when sleeves get wet.

nennyrainbow · 24/11/2016 18:11

Yes. I use mine almost every morning before I get dressed. I sleep in a very skimpy nightie as I get too hot otherwise but that would be too cold and indecent to walk around in. I have a full length fleece one with a full length zip which is navy with white dots. I also wear it outside to feed the chickens in the morning if I'm not dressed or put the bins out.

Arcadia · 24/11/2016 18:46

Oh wow! Never had so many replies to a post and couldn't see the thread for some reason then flat out busy at work all day til now! Thanks for all the responses. I have skimmed and will read properly later. I wear a long cardigan that DP & I jokingly call my 'housecoat' but it isn't very cosy so def going on my Christmas list. Any current recommendations for a fluffy cosy one?

mumofthemonster only just seen your housecoat comment! Snap!

Ilovenannyplum · 24/11/2016 18:59

Ooohhhh yes - love a good dressing gown! I've pinched DP's because it's bigger and cosier and it's got a hood

tictactoad · 24/11/2016 19:10

I have three. All fleece

One has really bitten the dust but is ideal for cooler summer evenings and the others rotate because wearing yesterday's dinner isn't a good look Grin

Kenworthington · 24/11/2016 19:10

Gosh yes I love my dressing gown. It's floor length black velver so possibly not the kind the op is imagining. My summer one is a navy floral floaty floor length one

lazybutton · 24/11/2016 19:29

Another with a few:

A beautiful full length black silk & lace one for cheeky weekends away (hardly worn!)

Two white waffle one for weekends, post shower/getting ready.

A light flimsy cotton one for the summer (instead of the waffle).

Then steal DHs one when I'm feeling ill/grotty or make a coffee in the morning before a shower.

Our house is too warm for the thick fleece ones but always eye them up around this time of year!

RingOfFire79 · 24/11/2016 20:03

Wearing one right now - white and fluffy - as I wait for my bath. I also have a dark green, waisted housecoat with embroidery from the 1940s for when I'm lounging around but want to look smartish (e.g. when the boyfriend is here)

Artandco · 24/11/2016 20:19

WHen do you all wear them? In the morning the first thing I do when up is straight in shower and dress. If bath in evening I would bath then straight into bed. Hence pjs and dressing gowns would rarely get worn.

Myusernameisalreadyinuse · 24/11/2016 20:20

I wear mine everyday. If I'm at home chances are I'm wearing it.

BastardGoDarkly · 24/11/2016 20:26

Who doesn't wear a dressing gown??! Oh, OK, you OP, get one!!! I absolutely love mine, bath, PJs D.G, or morning, throw it on, instant cozyfication.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 24/11/2016 20:32

I have 3 and I hate them. Unflattering, movement-limiting, frumpy dustmite collectors.

DH owns a particularly repulsive one that he won't part with. I'm going to set fire to it throw it away one of these days. It's too hideous for the charity shop.
