Following on from the skincare routines post, what ingredients do you make sure you include in your products, for example, Vit C, Vit E, Hyaluronic acid?

TIA

Cacay oil

Nice that selling the crop is helping communities too.

botemp · 19/11/2016 12:22

The science is a bit conflicting on that, I've never gotten a straight answer but HA draws moisture to it and hopefully keeps it in the part of the skin where you want it but there are some theories out there that it draws it from the skin if it isn't pulling it from the environment so either a water spray or standing in a steamy bathroom should solve that but as mentioned the science is a bit wonkey on this.

hollinhurst84 · 19/11/2016 12:23

I do like the kawaii panda box too when I remember to get it!
Just been picked for a photoshoot on Tuesday so need to ramp up my skincare. And choose makeup. And maybe shave my legs. Argh GrinGrin

botemp · 19/11/2016 12:26

I agree Lumpy, how it's extracted and grown makes a huge difference and ultimately price. I wish they would specify dates too, as I anticipate fresher will be better in most cases. I can often do without the essential oils that are there for fragrance, but I do still prefer a blend over a single even when it's similar quality/extraction.

Pupsiecola · 19/11/2016 12:28

Well done *hollin#. My Face Theory arrived today.

How long should oils last before going rancid? And do ppl store their stuff in the bathroom or is it considered too warm/humid?

botemp · 19/11/2016 12:31

H&B seem to sell Cacay Oil for a bargain price at 50 ml, unfortunately they seem to be insistent on charging 3x that for the same product in Euros Shock.

wiltingfast · 19/11/2016 12:33

Ah I was wondering that too pupsie! Watching Sali Hughes bathroom series, everyone seems to keep their stuff in the bathroom tho Grin

LumpySpacedPrincess · 19/11/2016 12:34

I'm using Espa pro serum at the mo and it's lovely.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 19/11/2016 12:37

I've used Green Keratin in the past and their oils are nice, I see they do the Cacay oil. I've had their serum, a moisturiser and some Rose-hip from them.

botemp · 19/11/2016 12:38

I keep cleansers in the bathroom and everything else in the bedroom I have seriously considered getting my skincare stuff a mini fridge. I prefer it as I can take my time in the bedroom, have a seat, etc.

The rate of it going rancid is dependent on the linoleic/oleic acid makeup. I believe 18 months is an average but you kind of have to judge it by smell. The addition of Vit E also helps prevent oxidisation, and keeping it out of the sunlight in a cool place is best.

hollinhurst84 · 19/11/2016 12:42

I do a mix
Cleansers in bathroom plus PM skincare in bathroom. AM stuff on dressing table
I don't actually use that bathroom except for hand washing stuff and using the loo Grin so it doesn't get warm/damp

LittlePurplePig · 19/11/2016 12:46

Hi skincare people :) I keep lurking on this thread, i really wish I understood the products I use better!

At the moment, I'm a bit confused about any contraindicated ingredient combinations - for example I thought that using retinol after an acid toner was a no-no, but then I've seen people list that in their routines? At the moment I use a glycolic/lactic acid toner (Pixi glow or FAB pads) every other morning, and retinol the same evening (LRP Redermic-R). I want to add a BHA product into the mix as I really dislike the congestion over my nose, but am struggling to work out where to fit it in the routine.

Also, does anyone have any opinions on Murad products? I'm thinking of treating myself to a Murad method facial next month, thought their stuff looked quite interesting.

LittlePurplePig · 19/11/2016 12:50

Oh - and on the skincare storage question - I only keep 2 cleansers in the bathroom that are in regular use, and the rest of the regular in-use stuff is on my dressing table, which I am lucky enough to have in a dressing room (smallest bedroom). I also have a few drawers in the landing sideboard for the 'stash' and less frequently used products like masks etc.

AuroraPolaris · 19/11/2016 13:56

Never heard of that oil either. Must investigate Wink

Well, I've expressed my love of oils well enough in these parts GrinIt did take my skin a while to get used to the Pai rosehip oil which I use in the AM, and I agree pure oils can be problematic- my skin does not agree with pure argan oil, for example.

Just about finished the tiny sample of the AMAZING Sulwhasoo ginger oil (lasts forever) and deliberating getting another little one, plus the tiny bottle is so cute.

Pupsiecola · 19/11/2016 14:00

Thanks all. I moved my bedside clock, which has temperature measuring, to the bathroom. Bedroom was 21 degrees (must turn rad down!). It went up to 23 in the bathroom whilst I showered, then back down to mid 21s. I think therefore I will leave everything in the bathroom as I don't have a dressing table.

Another question. Today I went for a 40 minute run whilst DS2 was doing football practice. So when I got up I:-

Cleansed with Toleriane
Applied Vit C
Waited half an hour, then applied SPF

Went for run, came back, showered.

Cleansed with Emma Hardie
Applied Face Theory Retinol
Applied Face Theory day moisturiser

This was all by 12.30am

I'll not be wearing any make up today, or any SPF as I'm only going out to take DSs to the gym, sit in the cafe and come home. But I will want to apply my PM products later. Surely another cleanse is OTT? Can I get away with my BHA followed by my serum and moisturiser? Or should I be doing another Toleriance cleanse? Three cleanses in one day can't be good? And actually on a day where my morning was as this morning, and I do wear make up or SPF I would have to cleanse a third time right?!

hollinhurst84 · 19/11/2016 14:01

I have the REN omega oil serum and that's a fab product. V odd feeling, it's an oil but very very light. I'm starting to use it again in the mornings under my moisturiser as the weather is changing

EnidButton · 19/11/2016 14:52

Am now foolishly considering getting semi-permanent eyelashes

Rapidlash! Honestly, I look like I have lash extensions.

I keep my skincare in a floor standing cabinet in the bathroom. Make up inc primers are in my dressing room. The bathroom doesn't get humid as I rarely take baths now and we use the en suite showers but it is the warmest room in the house. Can't see me moving it tbh. It seems to be fine, I can smell a hint of 'staleness' or rancidity a mile off, luckily.

EnidButton · 19/11/2016 14:53

Purple I have the smallest room as my dressing room too. Smile Welcome to the thread.

AuroraPolaris · 19/11/2016 15:21

Pupsie I always do a PM cleanse even if I haven't left the house.

Why do you use retinol in the AM, by the way?

Pupsiecola · 19/11/2016 15:40

Thanks aurora. But would you do three cleanses in the circs I described?

I only started the retinol today. I wasn't sure about using it post acid tone (which I do in the evening) whilst I'm getting used to it. I also read it's a fallacy that it shouldn't be used AM (so long as followed by decent SPF). I am happy to be corrected though. I do struggle a bit with what to use when to get all the actives in without overloading (seen Dr Sam's Instagram post today?!). I use Hydraluron and Niacinamide in the evenings (the latter shouldn't be used with Vit C, so VIT C is morning).

I guess I could use the Hydraluron AM then PM would be:-

Cleanse
AHA or BHA
Retinol
Niacinamide
Moisturiser

AM would be:-
Cleanse
Vit C
Hydraluron
Moisturiser

What do you guys think? (Usually use oils before bed).

OP posts:
AuroraPolaris · 19/11/2016 16:32

Yes in those circumstances I would cleanse x3. But... if say you workout right after rising you could do say water type spray -> SPF and then cleanse + AM routine.

Don't know of any "scientific" rules about retinol. To me though, since it's the "strongest" active I use it makes sense to use in the PM when I can add extra moisture to counteract the drying effect. SC says to wait an hour or so before applying other stuff but I try not to wait beyond 10-15 otherwise my skin becomes very very dry.
Also because I use P50, which in itself is quite potent, I alternate in the PM between that and the retinol, so each 2-3 times a week and indeed Vit C in the AM after cleanse.

AuroraPolaris · 19/11/2016 17:02

And bo pleeeeease don't mention nude lipsticks cause that is one of my real weaknesses.
^

Pupsiecola · 19/11/2016 17:12

I'm so fickle. My creams and serums are now in the bedroom, in a small drawer with my scarves. The bathroom is measuring 25 degrees and our bedroom rarely gets above 22; usually around 19 to 20, apart from in Summer of course. Should I move oils too? I have invested too much (time and money) into all this to risk affecting efficacy.

OP posts:
Pupsiecola · 19/11/2016 17:15

I hear ya re nude lipsticks.

Good suggestion re just a water spray and sunscreen if working out first thing. Clearly too early on a Saturday morning for me to think of that.
