If you had 1k for a second hand watch?

Just thinking about it really. My current watch is not keeping time well. It was left to me by my Nan and i really like it. It's an Omega. I've spent hundreds on having it serviced over the last 5 years and it never improves. I still wear it but then look at my phone to tell the time. Confused

I would like a second hand everyday watch (i don't see the point of spending lots on something only for special/dressy occasions).

I don't really have a clue about where to go for a good second hand watch and i don't want to trust ordering something over the internet.

Ba hah hah. If you want to spend 1k on a second hand watch, you must know the kind of thing you want! Otherwise you can get a perfectly decent watch that keeps time for about -ooh -£20.

Christ. I wanted a Ted Baker watch but couldnt justify the £70 sale price.

Spending hundreds having it serviced?

Just wear it as jewellery and use your phone to tell the time

sigh. No, i only know the watch i wear is valued at that for insurance purposes. I have never spent anything like that on a watch (as i said left to me by my nan). I obviously know there are rolexes for lots more and swatches for a lot less. But i thought there might be some which are better secondhand than others and some people who may advise on that. But, thanks for your help. Hmm

I think that wearing a watch which doesn't work is pretty pointless and i am struggling to continually get my phone out of my bag when i am out rushing and late and pushing a buggy and shouting at ds1 who is scooting off in the opposite direction (which is everyday). So i think buying a 20 qud one would actually be preferable. But as a treat i am fantasising about something similar but different and better at time keeping than my current one.

I am a bit sceptical as i feel they may just want to flog me one they want to get rid of. I just thought someone may know a bit about watches. But if you don't then thanks anyway.

I'm not allowed to go on holiday - I have a 21mo an almost 4yo and i'm about to have a baby! DH and i have had a really bad few years and this would be a treat in lieu of any kind of nice holiday for a long long time Grin

Noooo. We can afford a holiday. It just wouldn't be a 'bloody good' one for a grand with all my children! We have just had a very nice holiday at Eurocamp tho which cost over that for a week.

I hear you OP. I'd say either Girard-Perregaux or Jaeger Le Coutre. But watches are a very personal thing so dedicate your time to finding the right one for you xx

I thought feathermucker meant go away alone for a great holiday rather than trail 3 crying under 5s (on with asd) on a plane. Being given deathstares by strangers certainly isn't my idea of a treat. Grin

Also like cars I don't want a new one which loses half its value the moment you buy it. And I haven't seen any new I like as much as my vintagey crappy timekeeping one.

Jesus. I love Cartier watches, just like the classic look & love the little sapphire cabochon on the winder so that'd be my choice. Fil gifted me one for Christmas some years ago that he bought off eBay but was a bit too ladyish for him. I love it but save for best now. No idea what is best for reliability I'm thinking of getting a Fitbit for other reasons. Check out local auction houses for more of a bargain

Op, I have an Omega which I love. It's about 10 years old and keeps the time perfectly. My sister has a Cartier and she had problems. A local jeweller/watch repairer ended up replacing the winding mechanism (I think) for about £50 and is has been fine for the last year. See if you can find an old fashioned jewellers that do watch repairs.

I've been to 4 different old fashioned jewellers who have each serviced it and said there is nothing they can do. Each time has cost over £100 so I am loath to waste more money on it even tho I love it.

You don't have to justify yourself op! I'd suggest auctions for good Second hand watch deals. For around 1000 I'd rather buy a new tag heur or rado but that's just personal preference.
