If you had 1k for a second hand watch?

Just thinking about it really. My current watch is not keeping time well. It was left to me by my Nan and i really like it. It's an Omega. I've spent hundreds on having it serviced over the last 5 years and it never improves. I still wear it but then look at my phone to tell the time. Confused

I would like a second hand everyday watch (i don't see the point of spending lots on something only for special/dressy occasions).

I don't really have a clue about where to go for a good second hand watch and i don't want to trust ordering something over the internet.

I'd send it off to Omega rather than getting a local jeweller to service it.

MrsKoala · 11/07/2016 07:55

This is the one I wear now. It's very plain. But I like it. It has sentimental/family connections too so I'm not sure if that's why I am so fond of it.

Perhaps something a bit different would be better. As I think I will never find something that means as much and it wouldn't compare.

Also I can still wear this one for special occasions when I don't need to know the actual time.

I'll have a look at new tags. I'm fairly understated in my style. I usually prefer simple things as I'm quite a large framed person so think too much makes me look a bit draggy. Anything too chunky would make me feel too butch but anything dainty and sparkly makes me feel I'm trying too hard to be feminine (if that makes sense).

It's a big purchase for me which luckily we can afford, so I want to get it right.

I like that Omega Mrs K, can you contact Omega? I did similar years ago with a Gucci watch which had played up for years and they sorted it.

MrsKoala · 11/07/2016 09:40

Yes, I think I will. I just didn't want them to be snotty and say it's about 40-70 odd (no real idea of age) years old so what did I expect.

Only1scoop · 11/07/2016 09:50

Mrs K you might be surprised (I hope so and its worth a try) I'd try and speak to someone at Omega Uk and explain how much you love the watch and how much you have spent on trying to sort it.

PollyPerky · 11/07/2016 09:53

why 2nd hand? You can get a perfectly nice watch new for that sum. My Omega is a mini Constellation (with no bling) and cost around £1K. I love it. It's only the 3rd watch I've had. My previous one was a Tissot which I had for over 30 years.

MrsKoala · 11/07/2016 10:09

i do like this new Tag

MrsKoala · 11/07/2016 10:14

i also like this rolex . But. Oh. My.

TheGreatDessert · 11/07/2016 10:17

I recently got rid of my tag carrera. It was a terrible time keeper so I would hesitate to recommend their automatic movement. Sold at a huge loss too Sad

My DP also has a tag that he doesnt love...

I don't wear a watch now but DPs most reliable watch is a Citizen - I think it's solar powered. It keeps time perfectly and stays charged for a long time even when kept in a cupboard for days. They are generally much cheaper than tag.

Cartier or Omega are lovely and worth the money.

MrsKoala · 11/07/2016 10:23

DH has a rolex which he adores. But i'm not sure i could pay 3k for the one i like tho. I am not keen on roman numerals and all the cartier ones i have seen have them. I prefer just a line to mark the numbers instead.

This Omega is nice . But not as nice as the rolex!

Some people enjoy having nice things so some people should back off there's nothing wrong with wanting a nice watch that will last years and eventually become a gift to another family member or something that's left to someone in a will.

I'd use some of the money to purchase a little box for the old watch, maybe have a picture of your grandmother on it or inside it. I have no advice on watches because I never wear a watch but I just wanted to say don't annoy yourself over these posters who don't understand that this is a treat and an investment.

VulcanWoman · 11/07/2016 10:40

I've had a similar one to this for years, no problems, still looks fine.

Funny how there is a bit of bitching over the cost of a watch but it's ok to spend the same on a handbag [hmm[ or a holiday that's here and gone in a week.
My Tissot was for my 18th birthday and lasted 30 years. My Omega was a present to myself for all my hard work and I hope I will never need to buy another.

I like the ones you have linked to OP but it all depends on your wrists and hands. I have very small wrists and most metal watches look too clunky. I don't like Rolex generally as they are too showy imo.

MrsKoala · 11/07/2016 12:01

i have large wrists and hands (quite long and lean tho, often said like a piano players).

I think i will go to a jewellers now armed with a bit more of an idea of what i like and try some on. So thank you all for the suggestions. I will look at Tissot too. I had forgotten how nice they are. I don't get to the shops much so i'm just browsing online atm.

DH has said he would like me to get the rolex i linked as i'm having a girl this baby and it would be special to get something i can pass on to her. He sees these as investments. He thinks me buying an expensive handbag is outrageous tho! i am planning to buy a mulberry bag once the dc are older when it wont get dragged around the floor like mine do now

Your DH- an investment is something that increases in value with time- a watch won't but it has sentimental value perhaps. Don't forget that your taste may not be your daughter's and she may be posting on here in 50 years' time- 'what do I do with my Mum's Rolex which I don't like?'!!!!

BringMeTea · 11/07/2016 12:18

Have you looked at Christopher Ward? British but with Swiss workings afaik. DH has 2 and loves them. Good customer service too.

MrsKoala · 11/07/2016 12:18

Yes, sorry, he means an investment in something i will treasure and will be lovely to pass on. Not something will increase in value.

Like i treasure my nans omega.

Yes they may not like it. But i hope they will, like my jewellery. It's nice to pass things which mean something on if you can.

Hi OP have a look at Raymond Weil
I have mine 10 years cost £500 but have only had it serviced once.
I love it and it is perfect time keeper.

I love Omegas personally. Not a big Rolex fan. Some Jaegar Le Coutre are lovely too

leedy · 11/07/2016 12:52

If you like a simple, understated watch, I have a Baume & Mercier Linea that I love, the stainless steel one would be around your price range new.

MrsKoala · 11/07/2016 13:54

that Linea is nice, but i have a thing about not liking numbers that are outside the face and on the metal around it. Confused no idea why but i think it looks a bit fussy on me. I don't usually like rolexes but the one i do like is very plain and doesn't appear too chunky.

I like this Raymond Weil

I would go for a vintage Rolex. I've a very simple 1992 one for that amount

friends123 · 11/07/2016 14:19

Hi MrsKoala,
I work in a jewellers, ( haven't read the whole post) but if it's an investment then a Rolex every time, they keep their value, also very easy to sell on. Is your Omega losing time? Or not working at all? Unfortunately there's a lot of watch makers about but not a lot of very good ones. Is it not working at all or is it losing time?
Take a look at second time around ( online ) very good company to deal with for second hand watches.
