If you had 1k for a second hand watch?

Just thinking about it really. My current watch is not keeping time well. It was left to me by my Nan and i really like it. It's an Omega. I've spent hundreds on having it serviced over the last 5 years and it never improves. I still wear it but then look at my phone to tell the time. Confused

I would like a second hand everyday watch (i don't see the point of spending lots on something only for special/dressy occasions).

I don't really have a clue about where to go for a good second hand watch and i don't want to trust ordering something over the internet.

Thanks for the advice. It usually gains time quite rapidly, but in the last week it is now losing it.

i have sent Omega UK an email so i hope they will look at it.

I'd go for the Rolex you posted earlier-lovely and simple and as pp says, they keep their value well

Only1scoop · 11/07/2016 22:09

Hope Omega get back to you.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 11/07/2016 23:26

I have found Omega to be really helpful. Hope they are for you too.

Aeroflotgirl · 11/07/2016 23:32

Rein it in people, it's not a crime to like designer things, the op can afford it, so what. Makes you sound very jealous an Envy. Op you obviously want advice on a High end watch, not something from Asda. I would go to a reputable send hand jewllery, go to somewhere like Fraser Heart or Beaverbrooks and see what they have. What make woukd you prefer?

Superjaggy · 12/07/2016 00:02

There are some lovely watches in these links! I have a Tag Heuer Aquaracer which I've had for 4 years and it has kept perfect time. It's my favourite piece of jewellery ever! Before that I had a Tissot which was far cheaper but kept great time over 15 years.

I tried lots of watches in lots of shops then bought mine online - so it was new, discounted and guaranteed. Would that be an option for you?

Georgiesgirl · 12/07/2016 05:47

I love my Rolex. I'm not generally a fan but I like the simplicity of this one. It's also the midi size which works better for me as I'm quite tall. I believe you can pick them up for a bit over 1k. I got mine for 50p in a charity shop in the late 80's. Best chazzer find ever. It's 1950's but still going strong.

My husband and I both have Tissot watches. Both cost in the region of £300 (so up to £500 now?) but his is 20+ years old and mine is 15 years old - both are classic styles and great time keepers. They've had a couple of batteries each in the time , that's all.

walruswhiskers · 12/07/2016 06:23

Here's the pic of mine. His has just gone with him to work!

Have a look on bonhams.com - I've bought a few too many through them. They all have disclaimers on saying not tested etc etc, however I've never had an issue with servicing. The lot details always state whether they have full history etc, and if you're near London you can view them

I got a tank francaise for me though them for not much more than a grand, however there will be 20% fee on top of the sale price so factor that in.

and don't be bidding against me for any nice watches or I'll 'ave ya

BarbaraofSeville · 12/07/2016 06:38

I don't understand how a watch that doesn't keep time, needs £££s spending on it each year and doesn't look particularly special (sorry OP but unless you are so close to that watch to read whatever fancy brand it is, it looks just like anything you can buy for £50 or less from any high street shop that sells watches) is a treat or an investment and if I inherited it I would probably keep it in a drawer or guiltily sell it. It's not jealousy, it's practicality.

If the holiday is not an option and you want to treat yourself with £1k, I would spend £50 on a functioning watch that doesn't need 'servicing' (eh?) and the other £950 on whatever help you would benefit from most (cleaning, childcare, nice day out, Mumsnet cliche spa day). Smile

NashvilleQueen · 12/07/2016 06:52

There's a thread with a really clear title asking for advice on second hand watches for £1000.

I know I'll click on it and laugh at the OP for being so utterly ridiculous for spending her own money in exactly the way she wants.

Hmm

Some watches keep their value (serious criminals often have a stash as it's a good way of getting rid of cash but having an asset) if this matters then I'd Google and see what I liked. Otherwise go with your heart and pick one you love. Enjoy your new watch whatever you go with!

walruswhiskers · 12/07/2016 06:55

A mate of ours makes serious money buying and selling expensive watches. It's a sideline for him at the moment but he will move into it properly at some point. Lots of the watches he deals are worth 30-50k. So OP spending 1k of her own money is fine, imo - back off if you don't agree.

Aeroflotgirl · 12/07/2016 07:13

Exactly, it's not only a timepiece, but a collectors item that keeps its value, and she can pass on to her children. If you cant say anything helpful, keep Schtum.

Aeroflotgirl · 12/07/2016 07:17

1k is not a lot for a high end watch, they go for thousands as walrus pointed out.

MrsKoala · 12/07/2016 07:26

I do see what people are saying, and i don't think it's jealousy, more total bewilderment at why anyone would spend so much on something which you can spend a fraction on for similar on a functional level. If you don't see it you just don't and it will always seem ridiculous. I just don't see it with cars. To me and DH cars are just functional, they all pretty much look the same. But some people covet new ones and know all the differences. It's up to them what particular fields of design they like.

Barbara, i would never be spending this sort of money if we couldn't afford other things like holidays. We already have a cleaner, i can go on a spa day if i want etc. I think it would be strange to prioritise a watch over day to day things if we couldn't afford help that i would benefit from. That would always come first. And if i leave it to someone and they sell it then that's up to them.

I do appreciate the concern tho - i think sometimes it may seem that people are going without or struggling to afford something pointless.

I have a Breitling. I came into a bit of money and always wanted one. But as pp say, it's personal preference. It does cost me a lot to get it serviced. Have you tried contacting Omega directly?

Stellar67 · 12/07/2016 07:34

Sorry, I only saw the first few posts. I'll just go and have my coffee to wake me up. Blush

bookbook · 12/07/2016 07:48

Breitling -( though they are pretty chunky for my taste)
I still love Omega - I have a deville which I don't wear much anymore (numbers too small) , but when I need to it just fires up and goes - never lost time. So the new ones are better I suspect.
I have a Longines now which I love.
If you google jewellry shops which sell the good makes, they will nearly all have a selection of second hand watches for you to look at - they may just not advertise them. And they will come with a guarantee

OutwardBound2016 · 12/07/2016 08:07

I love watches and would choose a Patek Philippe, I have been dropping hints for years!. I don't wear much jewellery apart from wedding/engagement ring so think watches are a totally worthy investment. Happy shopping OP.

PollyPerky · 12/07/2016 08:09

Barbara This forum is style and beauty- not 'how should I spend £1k?'

I spent around £1K on an Omega a few years ago, in my mid 50s. So far, it's cost me less than £1 a day and I get pleasure every time I look at it. Far more than I'd get from a week's holiday or paying a cleaner Shock

I reckon I will never buy another watch given that my (cheaper) Tissot lasted me 35 years.

I'm not 'into' holidays (though it's not a case of either /or) or handbags costing thousands.

Each to their own, eh?

hotcurrypowder · 12/07/2016 08:11

But wouldn't £1,000 get you a rather special brand new watch?

mrssmith79 · 12/07/2016 08:11

What about a Constellation if you like Omega?

FuckyNell · 12/07/2016 08:20

I have a constellation and although it looks lovely has been a nightmare. Have just had to have a whole new mechanism put in and it's been serviced three times in 8 years. I've gone off omega Grin

Even though I'm small framed I would always get a mid size as the small (or ladies) looks rubbish on me. So you'd have to try different bezel sizes
