Wearing a boring-looking watch that can't keep time purely because it's a "designer" brand sounds like the ultimate in fashion victimhood.
I don't know how you could have read my posts and got this from them. I have said clearly i do not think it's a boring looking watch, in fact i think it is lovely - so therefore to me i am not wearing a 'boring looking watch' (the fact you think it is boring looking is irrelevant) and i have also said it has sentimental value as my nan had left it to me and explained why in particular i enjoyed wearing it knowing how she got it. Neither of these things indicate i am wearing it because of the 'designer' label.
However, i do agree with The least I expect a watch to do is to tell the bloody time , as a student of design 'form follows function' is my mantra and sadly as this is no longer fulfilling it's function then i have to look elsewhere.
My new criteria is firstly to tell the time well, secondly be of a design style i like, and thirdly be some kind of 'investment' that i can pass down and that will pretty much hold it's value.
As it is the Omega has now reached a nadir. I got caught in a torrential rainstorm yesterday and it now has droplets of water inside/evaporation steam. Last service i had i replace the glass as it had a tiny crack, so it seems the replacement glass is letting in water. I have heard back from Omega and they have given me an address to send it to.
But on top of that, and partly due to this thread crystalising my thoughts, i have also decided to purchase a new watch meeting all the above criteria. This is not because i want to just buy something pricey, but because i believe it is beautiful and a good investment/nice thing to pass on. I doubt some people will ever be able to see that tho, and that's fine, obviously, we can't all agree on things.
My dad is a bit of a watch collector, but each of his vary from 30-150 pounds, but he has so many that he must have spent 2k. Personally i would rather have one investment timepiece for 2k. But each to their own.
