If you had 1k for a second hand watch?

Just thinking about it really. My current watch is not keeping time well. It was left to me by my Nan and i really like it. It's an Omega. I've spent hundreds on having it serviced over the last 5 years and it never improves. I still wear it but then look at my phone to tell the time. Confused

I would like a second hand everyday watch (i don't see the point of spending lots on something only for special/dressy occasions).

I don't really have a clue about where to go for a good second hand watch and i don't want to trust ordering something over the internet.

Wearing a boring-looking watch that can't keep time purely because it's a "designer" brand sounds like the ultimate in fashion victimhood.

I don't know how you could have read my posts and got this from them. I have said clearly i do not think it's a boring looking watch, in fact i think it is lovely - so therefore to me i am not wearing a 'boring looking watch' (the fact you think it is boring looking is irrelevant) and i have also said it has sentimental value as my nan had left it to me and explained why in particular i enjoyed wearing it knowing how she got it. Neither of these things indicate i am wearing it because of the 'designer' label.

However, i do agree with The least I expect a watch to do is to tell the bloody time , as a student of design 'form follows function' is my mantra and sadly as this is no longer fulfilling it's function then i have to look elsewhere.

My new criteria is firstly to tell the time well, secondly be of a design style i like, and thirdly be some kind of 'investment' that i can pass down and that will pretty much hold it's value.

As it is the Omega has now reached a nadir. I got caught in a torrential rainstorm yesterday and it now has droplets of water inside/evaporation steam. Last service i had i replace the glass as it had a tiny crack, so it seems the replacement glass is letting in water. I have heard back from Omega and they have given me an address to send it to.

But on top of that, and partly due to this thread crystalising my thoughts, i have also decided to purchase a new watch meeting all the above criteria. This is not because i want to just buy something pricey, but because i believe it is beautiful and a good investment/nice thing to pass on. I doubt some people will ever be able to see that tho, and that's fine, obviously, we can't all agree on things.

My dad is a bit of a watch collector, but each of his vary from 30-150 pounds, but he has so many that he must have spent 2k. Personally i would rather have one investment timepiece for 2k. But each to their own.

I'm certainly no 'fashion victim' Grin

Always have loved a quality time piece though.

Hope you get some luck sending off to Omega Op.

I have the first Rolex you linked (Lady Datejust). I love it and have worn it every day for 15 yrs, mind you, it was a 3rd less than that price (they have increased in value so much).

It is so precious to me, I still get a happy feeling when I look at it. It is small though, so not as fashionable now as watches tend to be much bigger.

Having said all that it is a terrible time keeper, I've had it serviced and repaired 5 times (it stopped working twice). I think I have been unlucky and probably gesticulate too much (shaking can effect the mechanism).

Hope you find what you want. I love watches and I would, without a shadow of a doubt, replace it with the the exact same watch if anything (god forbid) happened to it. It wouldn't feel the same, though, I am sentimentally attached to this.

Hi MrsKoala, there a lot of lovely prestige watches out there & they should hold their value well. My OH swears by his James Bond Omega. He go it pre-owned last year & I think it cost more then than it did when it was new, so a good investment - so he told me....
If you want yours serviced, OHs came from Parkers Jewelers. He had to have it serviced & they did a great job, so they might be worth talking to.

Crikey there are some right bellends on this thread.

MrsK I really like Omegas, I'd stick with the brand - it's almost like continuing your Grandmother's legacy. And how lovely that you treasure her watch as much as she did.

Best of luck with the new arrival!
