What does your DH/DP wear on his feet when wearing shorts?

DD has begged that we find DH new footwear for the summer. Currently, his preferred choice with shorts is walking sandal types (which DD hates) or trainers with socks, which I hate...

Any suggestions?

Any suggestions of the sandal variety?

Flip flops or converse with trainer socks - what does he have against trainer socks. You can get good ones now that are properly hidden but stay on the foot.

VeganCanBeFabulous · 04/04/2016 18:23

Apologies for missing question mark after trainer socksBlush

MarieJeanne · 04/04/2016 18:24

Deck/boat shoes or Birkenstocks. I would like him to wear some naice leather loafers /moccasins sans socks but he's not having it.

Sistersweet · 04/04/2016 18:25

Either boat shoes or converse shoes, as opposed to high top converse. Nothing else is acceptable other than havianas but he has horrible feet

TheFallenMadonna · 04/04/2016 18:26

I think his issue with trainer socks is that the one time I encouraged him to wear them, they slipped down the back of his heel. And they were sports sock types, which he hates too. So he has now taken against them.

The only questions you need to ask is: " are his feet comfortable and is the footwear suitable for the activity". If the answer is yes, then leave him alone. No one else cares what his feet look like.

sparechange · 04/04/2016 18:39

Flip flops in casual places, tods-esque loafers in smarter places

TheFallenMadonna · 04/04/2016 18:42

He is smiling at your response averylongtimeago, but we are still going to look for something new...

Flip flops or deck shoes. Dh sees shorts as beach wear though so wouldn't actually walk around anywhere other than the beach in shorts
In summer in hot climates he would just wear thin cotton chino type trousers and moccasin type things

RalphSteadmansEye · 04/04/2016 19:01

He doesn't wear shorts - ever.

Full length trousers only. And 'proper' shoes.

(Helpful.)

EnPapillot · 04/04/2016 19:05

Deck shoes

herecomesthsun · 04/04/2016 19:10

merrell

another merrell

You may hate all of these, but they look comfy, allow ventilation to the foot and could prob be worn either with or without socks (though you might disagree)

Trainers - converse or vans (with trainer socks)
I virtually had to drag him into a seaside shop to purchase €5 flip-flops when we were at the beach and he was moaning about sand in his trainers Hmm

TheFallenMadonna · 04/04/2016 19:19

Thank you! I will show him those, see what he thinks. closed toe better for cycling...
I do disagree about socks with those though Wink

I have also shown him deck shoes (no!), Birkenstocks (he laughed, as I wear them), and Vans (he will need to try them on he says, so I think that will be a no too...)
Thanks for the suggestions!

Birkenstocks or hiking type trainers with socks here. Crocs (no socks) when camping/beach. Dh wears shorts all year round. Important for the shorts to be the right length too. Above knee is not acceptable!

specialsubject · 04/04/2016 19:53

deck shoes tear your feet to pieces and have very little grip. They aren't practical even on a boat - I know.

he's a bloke. He doesn't have to wear ugly uncomfortable shoes, that's what women do. (did you SEE Charlotte Church on the Last Leg? dear me...)

shorts go with flip flops if on the beach or round the house, trainers if walking/doing anything. Tell daughter a polite version of 'jog on'.

AgathaMystery · 04/04/2016 19:56

Deck shoes here

Chinks123 · 04/04/2016 19:56

Normal socks rolled down to look like ankle socks as we don't have any Grin and adidas gazelles, he looks good!

mrsmeerkat · 04/04/2016 21:41

Can someone suggest a pair or trainers that might look good with shorts

5minutestobed · 04/04/2016 21:49

Trainers and trainer socks(thin ones from h&m, seem to stay up fine) he pretty much lives in shorts for six months of the year.

Nettletheelf · 04/04/2016 21:51

Those walking sandals are heinous. Heinous. I'm with your daughter on this one.

I have banned my husband from even considering them.

He bought some of those terrible Adidas blue and white striped rubber flip flops the other day, when unsupervised. And wore them around the house with newly-purchased Adidas tracky bottoms (allegedly for keeping warm before cross country races but he kept going on about how 'comfy' they were).

I had to warn him.

Anyway, OP: Merrell trainers with trainer socks are the answer. Stand firm on the trainer socks.

piddleypower · 04/04/2016 22:59

It has taken me twelve years to get him out of white sports type trainers and socks. Now he will wear trainer socks and merrel type trainers. Also reef flip flops (with beer bottle opener in the sole!). Personally I can't bear deck shoes!

BikeRunSki · 04/04/2016 23:50

DH wears these socks with shirts and trainers too - high enough to stay up, short enough to look ok. Ignore all the special snowflake pseudo sports science, they are comfy and cool in trainers (I borrow DH's socks a lot, I have size 9 feet).

Sistersweet · 05/04/2016 07:26

Those Merrell ones are hideous, sorry. They'd be banned here I'm afraid
