What does your DH/DP wear on his feet when wearing shorts?

DD has begged that we find DH new footwear for the summer. Currently, his preferred choice with shorts is walking sandal types (which DD hates) or trainers with socks, which I hate...

Any suggestions?

Mine has a 'metal/surfy' vibe to his style and wears shorts all year round. He looks weird in long trousers! He wears his with Vans type trainers and trainer socks. He does have a pair of flip flops (with a bottle opener in them as per pp) he bought them on holiday last year and wears them around the house now. I assume he'll buy a new pair for holiday this year.

LBOCS2 · 05/04/2016 07:45

Mine also has metaller tendencies (will wear shorts but only if they're black Hmm). He wears canvas shoes with them - either Toms or Vans, or his trainers which are skate shoes and quite chunky.

I have attempted to introduce him to breezy feet via the medium of Birkenstocks and Havianas but he's having none of it.

ItGoesWithoutSaying · 05/04/2016 08:27

Second the comments about not liking men in flip flops. Fortunately, my DH agrees (or goes along with me!). He has one pair that he wears to and from the beach when we are on holiday.

When he wears shorts (only likes the slim-cut ones cropped just above the knee) he'll wear low Converse with trainer socks or Toms/espadrille type shoes with no socks.

Glitteryfrog · 05/04/2016 08:28

LBO - what is it about metal/skate/hipster men and their fear of exposing their feet?
Some deep rooted fear they'll end up in an impromptu mosh pit and break a toe?!?!

TheFallenMadonna · 05/04/2016 08:32

Who knew it would be so difficult?? DH maintains he doesn't care what he wears, but he has a massive long list of absolutes... Those socks are no good as they are too thick. He will only wear thin cotton socks. If he had his way he certainly would wear walking sandals with black "office" socks and (sorry to his supporters) I really would prefer to find an alternative... As I am also determined to replace his trainers (older than DS, 14) I see a shopping trip coming up.

Can I just say, normally he looks great. Smart casual for work, casual for weekends, smart suits for customers, we have it nailed with footwear. Put him in shorts though, and he morphs into his dad. My dad does it better than him...

Mine is sort of metal/punk and lives in flip flops most of the year except for winter, then it's converse, New Rocks and palladium boots. He also wears shorts most of the year too. He wears steel toe caps for work.

He also wears shorts all year inside the house and only wear trousers to go out in winter or for work. In summer it's shorts for work and outside work. Mind you he is from somewhere hot so is used to spending most of the year in summer wear.

He would never wear socks and sandals. He has seen my dad and Jeremy Corbyn in them and neither are style gurus.

SenecaFalls · 06/04/2016 13:40

Deck shoes, no socks

bigbadbarry · 06/04/2016 13:42

White sports socks and trainers. Fortunately he always walks a few hundred yards in front of me and the children anyway so nobody knows he is with us fashionistas.

murphys · 06/04/2016 13:50

Well living in a hot country, usually its flops. But not those plastic type ones. Decent flip flops, like Reefs or Billabong etc.

Sandals, no.

Trainers, by trainers I would think you mean Converse or again, some Reef style lace up. I don't even know if you get Reef there

If there are socks involved, they are definitely not to be worn with any slip on shoe, or showing out of the lace ups....

But then again, barefoot isn't out of the ordinary here either Wink

LazySusan11 · 06/04/2016 14:08

Whatever you get please don't get those horrible sandals with the velcro straps, who in Gods name invented those?!

misses point

Zigster · 06/04/2016 14:38

:) As a man, I'm laughing at this. :) So here's my completely reasonable take on it ...

Depends on age but, assuming older than about 21, shorts with a sock/trainer combination? Really? Why not just top it off with a replica Man U or Chelsea shirt to complete the having a full-English in Benidorm look?

Deck shoes (decent ones like Sebago) with no socks are a decent semi-smart option but are probably a little uncomfortable for all day wear.

Toms and Vans - I like. Not sure they work very well with trainer socks, though, as they're a bit low cut at the sides. I think I'll treat myself to a pair for this summer.

Flip-flops - pool-side and beach only.

Birkenstocks are a good option for the day. I know they're a bit Marmite but it's nice to get a bit of fresh air around the feet after much of the year being enclosed in heavier shoes. They're comfortable and quite a classic. Definitely no socks, though.

Walking sandals ... I'll confess to having a pair of Tevas. For gentle hikes in baking hot heat, they can't be beaten. Practical rather than fashionable.

DW might disagree with some of the above, of course.

Cheesybaps · 06/04/2016 15:08

DP wears converse with regular socks. Something like the pic below.

At first I was Confused Hmm but he actually pulls it off! Not sure if the overgrown skater boy look will still work when he's in his 60's.... I bet he still wears it though. He hates trainer socks too. I much prefer that than flip flops (which he also wears). Pasty, hairy, skinny man toes

What does your DH/DP wear on his feet when wearing shorts?
squoosh · 06/04/2016 15:10

Does he really pull it off or have you just developed Stockholm Syndrome?

Effendi · 06/04/2016 15:11

Flip flops or sandles. No socks.

Cheesybaps · 06/04/2016 15:33

Grin Squoosh I personally think the bloke could wear a bin bag and still be gorgeous so perhaps I am biased!

We do both tend towards a rock / grungy look anyway so I don't mind if he doesn't look entirely "normal" Grin

SenecaFalls · 06/04/2016 16:02

I live in Florida. I do sometimes play "spot the person from the British Isles." Let me just say that the footwear chosen to go with shorts is usually a good indicator. Of course, I know that y'all can spot us Americans a mile away when we're across the pond as well. Smile

notquitehuman · 06/04/2016 16:17

Converse or Vans are cute on most men. With trainer socks if paired with shorts.

Flip flops are only acceptable by the pool or on CRAZILY hot days. I will forgive men for wearing flip flops on holidays because they don't have nice sandal choices like us. Although toenails must be kept neat!

Deck shoes remind me of David Cameron. So no.

SenecaFalls · 06/04/2016 16:20

Converse is very much a teen, 20-someting look in the US.

TheFallenMadonna · 06/04/2016 16:27

There is no way DH could pull off that look.... Nor, to be honest, would I want him to try.

I'm going to get him to try on some vans/toms. Not convinced by the trainer socks though. I really dislike socks with that style of shoe.

TheFallenMadonna · 06/04/2016 16:30

So, senecafalls, if DH wanted to look like a Floridian (and I might not sell it to him like that...) what would he wear on his feet?

OP posts:
Artandco · 06/04/2016 16:32

Every man in Florida I have seen was dressed like from a 1970s sitcom

LBOCS2 · 06/04/2016 16:32

DH was genuinely delighted with how comfortable his Toms were. He wore the last pair until they fell apart, with socks 'tucked under' his feet.

Madbengalmum · 06/04/2016 16:32

Either leather slip on sandals or dock shoes.
Velcro sandals hideous
converse not good on the middle aged
Flips flops ditto
Not keen on trainers unless you are excercising either

LunaLunaLovegood · 06/04/2016 16:34

What about a pair of sliders?
