LUSH henna - why has it took me so long to find this fabulous stuff?

God it's amazing. Been using box dyes for ages to cover the greys in my brown hair. My hair was in terrible condition, dry, thinning, breaking off etc.
Tried the reddy brown Lush henna, it's a gorgeous colour, plus has left it really glossy, hasn't been this shiny all over since I was in my 20s.
Did it about 4 weeks ago and the colour and shine is still as good as when I first did it. Will never use a box dye again.
Promise I don't work for them, just needed to share the love!

I'm all cling filmed up!

Is there anyone left to care?

I'll just sit here alone for the next 6 hours then...

Greengardenpixie · 06/04/2016 16:57

What colour did you go for?

katiemorovsky · 06/04/2016 16:58

4 hours should do it. Six hours if you've got time on your hands. Looking forward to hearing how it went

Dancergirl · 06/04/2016 16:58

I'm still here ovo how long to go??

Greengardenpixie · 06/04/2016 17:00

Mine came today :) I see you are from Edinburgh. I live in Scotland too [Glasgow area] I ordered lush marron and brun. I recently did my roots with Clairol root touch up and daren't try the lush henna just yet. Am so tempted to just do a strand test though!!!!
A bit worried about what to do when the grey roots come through and then when I dye it. Will it make the badger stripe lighter? Have emailed lush so hopefully someone will answer my queries. How long are you leaving it on for?

OvO · 06/04/2016 17:17

Yay, people! Grin

I got the marron one. Really wanted to try the rouge but wasn't brave enough. Lovely staff member gave me a sample to try though.

I'm one hour in! Have nothing to do and nowhere to be so can leave it on for ages, think will try for 6 hours.

Green, the staff are so helpful in the shops so I'm sure they're just as good via email.

Will post my before pic here.

I'm actually really excited, haven't died my hair in years! Grin

Ovo ooh looking forward to the reveal Grin

I used 2 squares so I'll try brun/black next time, my roots are darker than I remember Blush and I have some lighter dyed hair that took the colour well, but a bit coppery.

One rinse off tip to try though (and I will next time) is apply conditioner to loosen the henna then do the rinse and shampoo+condition.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 06/04/2016 20:15

Ovo I'm here too and await with baited breath the big reveal. How much of a faff did you find applying it? And did you make it nice and wet?

I too wasn't brave enough for rouge but I'm working myself up to it! Is red hair ok at 40 something or will I look mutton?

OP posts:
OvO · 06/04/2016 20:32

It wasn't as bad as I thought to apply it. I think too many hands were a problem last time, plus the whole naked thing helped this time. Grin

When I first started and it was a bit splashy I was all 'I regret everything,' but it stayed contained to a small area so was fine.

I think I should have added more water to my mix. It was pretty thick. Reeeeally smooth and lump free though. I used the grater disc on my food processor and it didn't grate it - it turned it into the softest, finest powder I've ever felt! So it melted perfectly within 2 minutes.

Red hair is very okay at 40! If you don't have the confidence to do it now when will you?! DO IT. Grin

Oh, just remembered I took a couple of pics so if it looks too thick you lot will know so I can make it funnier next time.

Funnier? Muppet. RUNNIER.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 06/04/2016 20:38

Looks quite thick to me. Loving your photos and dedication to the cause though!

You could add more water to get it like runny yogurt (think ski). That gave me a better coverage on my greys. Someone said up thread you could take kettle into bathroom as it seems to get thicker as it rests. See what result you get though from this.

And I'm definitely going rouge next time!

Ah good idea about the Food Pro.
I can grat mine but I don't fancy using a whisk (I've had to scrub pancake batter off walls, if I have to scrub henna , it'll look like an abbatoir.)

Go for henna red IDo if it goes a bit too flame-y then you can tone it down. What colour are your eyes (don't say red ).
I don't want to use pure noir because I'm worried it will be too dark then I have to wait for fading.

I did read years ago that gin can help take excess red from hennaed hair. Or maybe just drink it won't seem so lairy Grin

OvO · 06/04/2016 20:43

I forgot to mention the smell!

I love it. We were all sniffing it in the car and passing it around. Grin About an hour later my DS declared it smelled like Turkish delight - and it so does!

Arrrrgh, only been 4.5 hours - desperate to wash it as I want to seeeeee.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 06/04/2016 20:59

Yes Turkish delight! My block is in the corner of my bedroom and I have a good inhale as I go past. Love it!

My eyes are green 70isa, I seem to remember it looking good when I used to dye it red with body shop henna as a teenager, somehow I've got more panicky about it now I'm in my 40s. You'd think I'd get less self conscious. But you are right if it's too much I have some BRUN which I can always do over the top.

CutYourHairAndGetAJob · 06/04/2016 21:21

Ok I have checked mine and it is caca rouge. Is that the bright red one? I remember it looked good before so I'm sure it will be fine, won't it?. My hair is naturally brown with some reddish tones, I am freckly and look like a natural redhead.

Ido I am late 30s, I don't think you are too old for henna.

The sticker on mine says i bought it in 2013 - will it still be OK do you think?

OvO · 06/04/2016 21:33

Oh god oh god oh god oh holy fuck

I wasn't strong so have washed it after 5 hours. It looks freaking ginger! I look like my DH's twin!

Fuuuuck.

I wanted a hint of red.

It's still wet. It'll be so much better when dry, won't it? WONT IT???

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 06/04/2016 21:37

Don't worry Ovo it will be fine. It'll take a couple of washes to settle down, the colour gets deeper as days go by. mine looked gingery too when I'd first did it but soon settled down to a lovely browny red. Honest!

OP posts:
IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 06/04/2016 21:38

City pursue- yes caca rouge is the reddest one. Not sure about a sell by date? Surely they don't go off?Shock

City pursue?? That can be your new nn cutyourhair 😀

katiemorovsky · 06/04/2016 21:45

OvO - post a photo. It will look better when dry and as IDo said the colour will develop over the next few days so it will change.

CutYour - It will probably be fine. I think the worst that will happen is that you won't get much colour out of it. Nothing weird.

OvO · 06/04/2016 22:16

Panic over. Grin

It looks much darker now it's dried. It didn't help that my DH said fuuuuuck when I first came out the shower, with a look of horror. Bastard. He'd better sleep with one eye open!

I LOVE it now. And I smell of Turkish delight, bonus!

Looks lovely, great shine!

SwedishEdith · 06/04/2016 22:41

Lovely! I'm watching as am tempted by henna - used to use the Body Shop stuff and my natural colour was like OP's is now.

Does it make a mess of your grout?

OvO · 06/04/2016 22:47

Thank you, both of you. Grin. At least you know how to compliment a person - my 8 year old just woke up, stared at me and said, "is it okay if I say I liked your old hair better?" He had a worried wee face as he asked!

No, no messy grout here. The only properly messy part was washing it out and it sprayed all over the shower but it all washed away without even spraying bathroom cleaner about.

CointreauVersial · 06/04/2016 23:03

Fab colour, OvO, and lovely and shiny. Did you have much grey beforehand?
