LUSH henna - why has it took me so long to find this fabulous stuff?

God it's amazing. Been using box dyes for ages to cover the greys in my brown hair. My hair was in terrible condition, dry, thinning, breaking off etc.
Tried the reddy brown Lush henna, it's a gorgeous colour, plus has left it really glossy, hasn't been this shiny all over since I was in my 20s.
Did it about 4 weeks ago and the colour and shine is still as good as when I first did it. Will never use a box dye again.
Promise I don't work for them, just needed to share the love!

For the people that didn't get good grey coverage, did you make sure you applied it hot? I have only been disappointed once, been lush henna ing for years now, and the mixture had gone cold. Use a Bain Marie type thing... I use marron on my dark brown hair with tons of greys and it always covers very well. I do use a tint brush for the grey bits though to ensure they are covered on both sides, then I just slap the rest on the lengths with my hands.

Wenchelda · 18/05/2016 07:35

Hmm interesting - it probably had cooled a bit by the time I applied it. Stupid question but how do you keep it hot whilst applying? I'm warming it on the hob downstairs in the kitchen but applying upstairs in the shower. How can i stop it from cooling?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/05/2016 18:07

I'm (impatiently) waiting for my hair to grow, it used to get to the 5 weeks stage and drive me potty. Last cut was Easter and it's about 1.5" at the back ,2" on the top (it was cropped at Easter )

Still have some ends that had box dye (a shade 10.00) which took the colour pretty well.
I've used henna 3 times since Easter, don't want to go too dark but my roots are dark brown.

No problem keeping the henna hot (I used two squares) , in a Pyrex bowl. I had to top up with boiling water the first time , it was too thick.

I think Bank holiday Weekend will be the next henna session Smile, I'm hoping there's no problem with such regular use, don't want to overdo it.

Wenchelda · 19/05/2016 09:08

Right ... My henna is on. Eek! Hope it turns out ok. I kept it over the boiling pan of water and applied it in the kitchen so it was definitely hot when it went on. Currently wrapped in cling film with a towel over the top. I've got to go out later but should manage to keep it on for just under 3hrs so hopefully that will be enough. Just realised I should've took a "before" pic so I can compare.

Wenchelda · 19/05/2016 11:58

Ok, hopefully I've added pics with this. Henna complete, colour is lovely BUT my grey/white hairs are still there Hmm Not sure what I did wrong - henna was hot when I applied and I left on for 2.5hrs, which the leaflet says is plenty and no need for any longer. First pic is my horrible white/grey hairs before (found a photo is forgotten I'd taken the other day in anticipation of henna-ing), second pic is same grey hairs after henna, and third is back of my head (not very good pic as trying to take it myself!)

I think you need to leave it on longer tbh. I wouldn't go by the leaflet. I leave mine on for 3hrs at least. Going to try for longer next time.

neveradullmoment75 · 19/05/2016 18:05

Mine is the same. The roots take a bit more than that, but not much. I am going to do the roots again first. Leave it on for as long as I can then apply the marron and brun to my whole head a few days later.

neveradullmoment75 · 19/05/2016 18:06

The colour is lovely though. I do love the colour of the henna . I too also find it disappointing on the grey roots.

Wenchelda · 19/05/2016 21:30

Will definitely leave longer next time - has anyone tried leaving it on overnight or is that too extreme?!

neveradullmoment75 · 20/05/2016 00:55

Someone did on here to great effect. Got rid of all her greys tooSmile Don't think my dh would be to impressedShock

JonSnowsBeardClippings · 20/05/2016 07:05

Not overnight but I leave it for at least 4 hours. When my grey hadn't been covered properly it's been because I haven't had enough mixture and have applied it too thinly

neveradullmoment75 · 20/05/2016 11:14

My henna from lush arrives today. Going to do my roots tonight as I am out for lunch with friends tomorrow and am not that happy with my badger stripe atm! Blush Going to leave it on for most of the evening I think Just going to do the roots.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/05/2016 11:50

Whenchelds

Yes, IDoAll (the OP) left henna on overnight with clingfilm and a beanie. She says it is the way to go Grin though not the most glamorous look.

Back in the day (ie last millenium) I used to buy Henera Henna Powder and wax. You had to soak towels with boiling water, ring them out and drape round your head . Only damp heat worked, no hairdryers.

It was really tough going.
Then I used BodyShop Extra Red for years (with a plastic bag, you can't use foil, it reacts)

Lush/clingfilm/turbie twist wrap is a walk in the park Grin

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 21/05/2016 18:47

Hello OP here! Good to see you henna virgins going for it.

I leave mine on all night and do mix it quite wet (think pancake batter) and that covers my greys well. I did read to add a splash of apple cider vinegar which is supposed to make it cling to your greys like mad.

Anyway I've currently got ROUGE on my head 😵 First time I've ventured for full on red 😵😵. Going to leave it overnight so that'll be about 15 hours in total. The man in lush was proper impressed with my commitment to the product!

Here is my before pic which is a mix of MARRON and BRUN.

My colour has developed a bit more over the last couple of days and now my greys are slightly better covered but I'm definitely going to leave it on all night next time!

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 21/05/2016 19:27

That's the spirit Wenchelda. I put a towel over my pillow. I did lose the beanie hat in the night but the cling film stayed put. Might try a bit of apple cider vinegar in the mix next time too.

Looking forward to your after pics, Ido!

hownottofuckup · 21/05/2016 21:14

Just RTFT thread, can't wait to see your results IDo, I'm going to have to try this. I started going grey in my 20's Sad

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/05/2016 22:24

I'm sporting a headful of henna right now, I upped the ante with one-and-a-half Noir to one Brune (no strand test either, I'm foolhardy cooking on gas Grin

Wash off at 11pm or so. (Don't think I'd risk an overnighter, I'd look like a Cut-Price Elvis Impersonator if it takes too well )

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 22/05/2016 10:24

Here is the rouge! Not massively different from my MARRON/BRUN mix really. My hair is dark brown naturally. Am pleased with it though and it's texture feels great.

How did you get on 70isa? Is it time to break out the white suit and practice the lyrics to hound dog 😀

Looks beautiful :)
I am doing my roots. Have had it in for about an hour in and a half so far. Just leaving it on for most of the afternoon. Hopefully it will take. Think I did a bit of crap job with the back though. It had gone a bit thick and hard to manipulate. Hopefully where my parting is will be good. Going to give it a few days and then do a full head to even it all up if needs be :)

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 22/05/2016 13:20

Thank you, Am out in the sun and it's now looking very bright! My family keep commenting (in a good way- I think 😊).

Good luck with yours!

Sorry wenchelda I deserted you, yes on hot over a Bain Marie like you did, and I leave mine on for a minimum of 3.5 hours. My greys are shocking, I will do a before and after next time I do it. Hope it's working for you now :)

neverAdullmoment79 · 28/05/2016 15:58

Well i have a full head coverage on. Decided to go with marron 2 cubes and one brun this time round. Slightly runnier mixture though. Added a bit too much water by accident. OMG was it burning though on application!!!
Going to keep in for 4hrs so that will be around 8 oclock to wash out. Hopefully that will do it. Dont want it too red but i think the brun would make my hair really dark since i did a root cover up with it just a week ago.
