I would love to smell the new Hermes.I adore the Tart but sweet refreshing Rhubarb in Heeley's Verveine and in Aedes de Venustas.A lot of Perfumistas criticise the latest releases as being very one - dimensional though.

I have a couple of Hermes that I love : Pamplemousse Rose and Sur Le Toit.I would truly love to love Jour d'Hermes but the sparkling citrus turns to Fairy washing up liquid after a couple of minutes.

Sotd is Penhaligon's Orange Blossom : the smell of Spring for me.The sky is deep blue and the barbecue is being fired up for dd1's birthday meal. It's not warm but who cares?

MsBojangles · 20/04/2016 11:57

I once dated someone mainly because of his smell, turns out is was a Hermes something or other, it was utterly divine, unlike the man.

SOTD: Diorissimo (again)

Today's sunshine is making me hyper aware of storage, particularly with regards to my vintage treasures who've made it thus far unscathed. My collection is currently stored out of direct sunlight but on display nevertheless, I need to hide them away in a cupboard don't I? Sad

YetAnotherNC · 20/04/2016 12:13

I hate putting all my perfumes away, I used to like looking at the shiny bottles with their promise of lovely smells!

MrsCocoa I pm'd you- did you get message? Smile

teta · 20/04/2016 12:39

Meant to say Not Warm .
I've just done the opposite.I've liberated many of my summer bottles. They tend to be much lighter than my Wintry ones.I'm going to spray with abandon this summer ,though admittedly some are a bit like Body Spray.

BluebellGal · 20/04/2016 14:07

Miss Battleaxe - thanks for your bargain perfume tips - much appreciated, will seek those out. Particularly Chique, Panache as others have recommended them too.

Loving my bargain scents. My DH is now wearing Jovan musk for men, I love it, it's the perfect musk and so sexy.

SoTD is Pell Wall Pretty in Pink - it's the perfect English rose perfume, very feminine and pretty just as the name suggests. Perfect for this lovely sunshine we're having today

BluebellGal · 20/04/2016 14:10

I love the tartness and sweetness of rhubarb when eating it, so can imagine that if that can be captured in a scent that would be lovely...but can't remember rhubarb actually smelling of anything.

FrustratedFrugal · 20/04/2016 17:20

Cut rhubarb stalks and rhubarb leaves definitely have a tart acidic smell.

I have at least three rhubarb perfumes - CdG Rhubarb, Aedes de Venustas and Flashback from Olfactive Studio. I went back for a squirt of Hermes - fab opening minutes but it quickly became a nondescript shampoo smell. Meh.

Ambroxide yes Caron definitely belongs in the pantheon. I love Yatagan.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 20/04/2016 17:56

oh, i liked Yatagan but it gives me horrific migraines so i had to say goodbye. i couldn't even bear anyone near me wearing it, it still set the migraines off. a shame as i do like it, its so rich and earthy to me

MrsCocoa · 20/04/2016 20:04

Yes Yet, thanks. Have just replied Wink.

We're quite big on rhubarb here at the moment - you had me googling 'the smell of oxalic acid' and looking up Fragrantica's list of perfumes with rhubarb notes a couple of week ago.

FrustratedFrugal · 20/04/2016 20:45

MrsCocoa I googled that today - and then this trying to find out what aromachemicals are used to create that smell. Apparently rhubarb and gardenia have something in common, an aromachemical called Gardenol. And a paper described 59 different aromachemicals detected in rhubalb stalks with headspace technology

YetAnotherNC · 20/04/2016 22:30

My fracas has arrived, so SOTE (too late for SOTD) is fracas. Gorgeous! Definitely not selling... Am lying in bed swamped in tuberose. Grin

I don't think I've ever deliberately smelled rhubarb. Are we talking raw or cooked? I love rhubarb crumble, rhubarb cobbler, rhubarb jam, don't know about rhubarb perfume. Rhubarb is a very weird word...

Ambroxide · 20/04/2016 22:53

I love gardenia. Maybe I need to try rhubarb.

MrsCocoa · 20/04/2016 22:56

Waves at Yet - have PM'd you again. Glad you are enjoying the Fracas - how does it compare alongside the T&D?

Have just checked and I used the last of the rhubarb at the weekend, but from memory, it has that earthy green organic smell of freshly cut vegetation, but the acid rings out, almost like a harmonic chord, and octave or two higher.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 20/04/2016 22:58

What is it about certain perfumes that turn them into toilet duck on your skin even though they are really nice in the bottle?! I have pondered this many times. Givenchys especially do it on my skin, i wonder if there's a common ingredient in them that does it

MrsCocoa · 20/04/2016 23:01

I was thinking about raw (and that maybe I should try gardenia).

cressetmama · 21/04/2016 08:05

Thank you for the fascinating link to the Perfumer's Apprentice, Frugal. Seriously starting to worry about the unimaginable pitfalls of perfumery, the undreamed of hazards lurking beneath the calm fragrant surface!

Rhubarb crumble is lovely with chopped stem ginger added to the rhubarb; would it smell nice too? Aqua Fiorentina and CdG Rhubarb are my weaknesses. The green earthiness is powerful in Serpentine too, (also CdG but possibly discontinued) and the first MMMargiela.

I am fairly certain that gardenia will pass me by, just from being given a plant.

ggirl · 21/04/2016 08:14

Newcomer to this thread ..am slowly becoming obsessed with scents ..hav to share my latest bargain
mary greenwell's lemon ..perfect spring scent

teta · 21/04/2016 08:43

Ooh ,please tell us how it smells?
I'm not familiar with Mary Greenwall scents and the Fragantica reports seem to be highly polarising.Francois Roberts ( the Nose for Mary Greenwell) composed Friedemodin perfumes that I've grown to love though they weren't love at first sight!
I would be really intrigued by this range and whether it's a similar slow-grower?
Sotd is Jo Malone's Wild Bluebell to do the Garden.Masses of Bluebells are opening up and beautiful scents are everywhere.

ggirl · 21/04/2016 08:56

the scent critics description sums it up perfectly ..much better than I could.
here

It came with a sample of her Plum fragrance as well which is gorgeous and much more understated than the lemon

teta · 21/04/2016 09:40

Thank you ggirl and welcome to this thread.
I'm rather tempted to order with the free sample !
So much for my no-buy.
I really regretted not buying all the Friedemodin scents when they were in Tk Maxx though .

MissBattleaxe · 21/04/2016 09:45

I picked up a Mary Greenwell plum purse spray for just 7.50 in my local fragrance shop. It's an unusual modern chypre that's not actually very plummy, but very good.

teta- I really recommend Friedemodin. Try TK Maxx.

BluebellGal · 21/04/2016 14:28

Rhubarb is a strange word. Random fact about rhubarb....film and tv extras in the background will often just say 'rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb' as it gives the appearance of natural speech

ggirls - thanks for the link, I'm always looking out for bargain scents, so much appreciated.

My Juliette has a Gun discovery boxes arrived this morning, so my SoTD is Vengence Extreme. Want to test something special for the weekend, so wanted something punchy and long lasting. I like it although the rose is a little sharp for me, would prefer something softer.

Which JHAG scents last longest for you guys and would suit a special occasion (daughter's christening)?

YetAnotherNC · 21/04/2016 16:56

ScentsOTD Fracas on one wrist and Truth or Dare on the other. Wanted to see how they compared. Grin

Both start out with a whopping tuberose and white floral. Fracas is a bit more full and elegant, TorD gives a slightly thinner, screechier version, but there is initially very little to tell between them; Fracas is perhaps more poised and balanced.

It is after about half an hour to an hour that the differences appear. Fracas still feels like a hothouse floral, but buttery, smooth and a very full scent. All the notes are still there, just a little bit rearranged. TorD by this time has lost many of the big top notes, the tuberose, lily and jasmine, and has turned into a vanilla-y sort of thing. Still quite pleasant, but...

Four hours later, Fracas is still going strong, still getting heady tuberose, jasmine, iris, and now a bit of sandalwood and musk, still recognisably Fracas. TorD on the other hand is just a smudge of vanilla and a hint of musk, not a lot there.

I guess how they both develop is reflected in the price. They are similar to start with, but diverge quite quickly. I still lurrrrrve Fracas, but for £6.99 TorD was a nice surprise.

YetAnotherNC · 21/04/2016 17:02

Bluebell I have never tried any JHaG fragrances so can't help I'm afraid! One of their sample boxes is on my list for future treats....!

BluebellGal · 21/04/2016 17:56

YetAnotherNC

Love your little experiment and descriptions. Just shows how a smell-a-like can quickly morph into something different entirely. Sounds like the Fracas is better value for money based on your description
