OMG, Frugal, I will be stalking you for a sample/swap of that beauty!

The ad is so simple yet so astonishingly lovely...perhaps we should start collecting prints instead of perfume, might be easier on the wallet Wink

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 18/04/2016 17:20

Frugal- I see so many perfumes on ebay from Lithuania- I am never sure whether to trust their veracity.....what do you think? I bought a miniature last summer of Creation by Ted Lapidus (I needed to revist my time living in Brussels in early 1987) and it was rank- not sure if fake or just gone off. I've never bought any more from Lithuanian sellers. There just seems to be so much out there, I wonder how "real" it is.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 18/04/2016 17:21

I am very cross at myself for missing out on a Dior miniature set (Miss Dior originale, Diorissimo and Dune) I missed it by 53p!

cressetmama · 18/04/2016 18:22

I could do a decent size sample of original Dune, ThenLater, as I have a full bottle I bought for my late grandma, that she didn't open and which came back to me. It is a bit of a ozonic sillage monster and I stopped wearing it for ages after some bloke admired it (having been sitting a distance away during a longish rail journey)! Cannot help with the others...

Is Lithuania a secret scent Mecca? Or is it all about Internet marketing scams?

FrustratedFrugal · 18/04/2016 18:35

ThenLater no idea what it is like but I bought a mini for just a few euros. Cheap thrills. The promised narcissus note enticed me. And yes, buying old ads would probably be cheaper in the long run but perfumes are more fun.

I'm pretty sure I had another classic Dior in my sample drawer. I rooted around and lo and behold, wearing some Diorling on my wrist. A thick, velvety and leathery flower (rose?), so grownup that I am almost taken aback. Imagine a low throaty purr, then go an octave lower. Loving it.

Only the vaguest memory of Diorling lingers; probably much too young for it, but it sounds divine.

cressetmama · 18/04/2016 20:24

Then, not now.

MsBojangles · 18/04/2016 20:29

ThenLater I can help with the Diorissimo and Miss Dior Smile

Love your description of Diorling, Frugal...am drooling but it's probably too sophisticated for my peasant skin, damn it! The ad looks very Miss Whiplash Grin

Think if I could only wear perfumes from one house, it would be Dior. What about you lot?

MissBattleaxe · 18/04/2016 21:51

Hmm. Only one house? Tricky. Probably Guerlain as you could have a whole scent wardrobe from there and still have something suitable for every occasion.

MrsCocoa · 18/04/2016 22:28

Thanks for the tip re: Pell Wall - they sell perfume making ingredients! I wonder how their workshop compares with 4160's? Anyone been?

Inspired by your vintage finds I've just tracked down a Gres miniature (circa early 80s) to take me back to my youth.

And had a lovely afternoon sniffing Serge Lutens in Harvey Nics yesterday. MsB - that might be my house of choice (this week at least!).

Ambroxide · 18/04/2016 22:32

Hello, may I join you? I was on some of the very old perfumistas threads and then had a bit of a problem with perfume (allergic stuff), so vanished.

If I could only have one house it would have to be Tauer. I love almost everything that he's done with such a wild passion. I couldn't live without Lonestar Memories which I was introduced to by one of the previous threads. But I also wear often Eau D'Epices, Zeta, Lonesome Rider, L'Air du Desert Marocain and Incense Extreme. I'd like a few more, too!

Bluebell, if you like bargain perfumes, I can highly recommend both Charlie Blue and Chique which are both in a similar vein to Tweed. Charlie Blue is much more aldehydic and sparkly (think bargain Chanel No 5 with less floral stuff going on and more woody/spicy notes) but Chique (v cheap from Amazon or similar) is really like Tweed but a lot lighter. It's quite sophisticated for something so cheap.

Diorling sounds fabulous.

cressetmama · 19/04/2016 09:55

House of choice would be Hermes, I think, but it would not be the easiest choice. I would marry JC Ellena, but I'd want regular dalliances with some more flamboyant lovers on the side.

SoTD: is feeling like Another Oudh (JHaG). I fancy the sparkly floral incense, and it feels a bit desert spring. It is a sparkling clear morning here, but still quite crisp. Off to march the dog around a loop.

In my capacity as the morning greeter: Hello Ambroxide and welcome back! Delighted that you've managed to overcome (or swerve) the allergy issues. Interested to know a bit more about the Lonesome Rider as I've only read one review when it was released, and Tauer's distribution doesn't stretch as far as me.

BluebellGal · 19/04/2016 12:23

Loving the old perfume ads - why don't they make them like that anymore? Always laugh at the perfume ads on telly these days - Keira on a bike for Chanel is the worst.

Thanks Ambroxide for the recommendations on budget perfume, will seek those out. Have smelt Charlie years ago but always dismissed cause its cheap - time to revisit!

BluebellGal · 19/04/2016 12:30

Had an exciting package in the post this morning - my Pel Wall samples!

I only purchased 10 but they threw in an extra couple. Not bad for £10 inc delivery. They are small and no atomisers, but nevertheless some great scents in there, including Simply Sandlewood (he must be a mind-reader as I am missing my Tam Dao and this is very reminiscant).

My SoTD is Simply Sandalwood by Pel Wall and it's deliciously woody and creamy.

Alas I did not receive 1953 - it's possible they've run out or he didn't notice my note asking for it. Such a shame as I wanted to smell ambergris following the article yesterday!

MissBattleaxe · 19/04/2016 12:38

I'm a big fan of Pell Wall. It's run by Chris Bartlett and he does it all himself. I especially like Pretty in Pink and Deep Purple- which is an irissy, mossy , damp violet.

BluebellGal · 19/04/2016 12:40

MrsCocoa I came across Pell Wall on a blog I often peruse (I Scent You a Day) it was one of her top 10 perfumers of 2015. It's a small artisan perfumer, the fragrances are good value (from £38 for 100ml up to £92 for the most expensive scents) and the perfumer does pod casts on his blog (pellwall-perfumes.blogspot.co.uk/) -like you say he also provides services/ingredients for amateurs and perfume houses. Lovely art deco packaging

MsBojangles · 19/04/2016 13:00

SOTD: L'Artisan Premier Figeur (recommended to me by you lovely ladies when I was craving coconut), creamy greeness seems right for a fresh spring day.

MsBojangles · 19/04/2016 13:04

Oh Bluebell, so much temptation when I'm on a no spend!!!

teta · 19/04/2016 13:12

Hi Ambroxide!
Love Tauer too : my favourites are Zeta and Carillon Pour Ange especially at this time of year.

Pell Wall perfumes is relatively local to me and of course I've tried them. The box of little bottles is really good value.I've tried the 1953 some time ago but I can't recall the smell sadly.I found the Violet perfume rather green and dry and more masculine than feminine. Its a very different interpretation of Violet than say the Violet Pastilles of Penhaligon's Violetta which I love.

Sotd is Jardin Mystique picked today for the Lily of the valley.I've decided I'm buying no more perfumes as I have so many now. It's absolutely fatal to read perfume blogs and Fragantica as I want everything new.So now I'm going to try to swop or sell only.

Do you all have the same problem or are you more contained?

Ambroxide · 19/04/2016 14:05

cressetmama, Lonesome Rider is amazing. I really love it. It's much more subtle than Lonestar Memories and quite gentle at first whiff. It's the first perfume with iris in it that I have really liked as I often experience it as a sort of dry cardboard type of smell, which is just as attractive as it sounds. The drydown is really interesting. The first day I wore it DH suddenly said 'you smell like a pine forest' and it's not piney but the woodiness and floral stuff really combine to give that foresty feeling. It's definitely more feminine than Lonestar but still very much unisex, IMO. The leather note is very subtle, more sort of suedey than full on leather.

I am trying not to buy more things, too, hence my foray into bargain classics which has turned up a few things that I really like.

FrustratedFrugal · 19/04/2016 16:44

Ambroxide welcome back! I love your taste in perfume.

I can't pick one perfume house but if I could keep Chanel, Dior, Guerlain and Tauer, I'd be pretty happy Wink

Today I did some sampling at the local Hermès counter. I wanted to wear some Eau d'Hermes (to continue with the Roudnitska theme) but I also liked their new rhubarb scent. I like Hermes scents too but for some reason none of them are must-haves for me.

MissBattleaxe · 19/04/2016 17:48

BluebellGal- All of these are great (don't laugh) ToL Tweed, Coty L'Aimant, Jovan Musk for women, Yardley Lily of the Valley.

I am a die hard fan of bargain classics. I have Yardley April Violets, Chique, Panache and L'Aimant and I rate them all very highly. My Mum smells terrific in Tweed. I always compliment her on it.

In fact, I often go on allbeauty.com and search women's perfume under £10. There is so much there and much of it is excellent. I lose numerous hours and pounds doing that.

Ambroxide · 19/04/2016 21:02

Rhubarb sounds interesting! I don't think I have ever smelt a rhubarb scent.

Frugal, hello! I have you to thank for lots of my favourite perfumes, actually. You were the one who introduced me to Yatagan which has become a firm favourite (and isn't expensive so another one for the bargain hunters if anyone likes quite uncompromising perfumes). Actually, Caron would be a great pick for a house to wear, if only they would bring back Coup de Fouet.

MissBattleaxe · 19/04/2016 21:42

I found Jour D'Hermes very rhubarby.

Ambroxide · 19/04/2016 22:11

I don't think I even know what rhubarb smells like! I haven't sniffed it much. Will have to have a pop at in in Sainsburys.
