How much would you spend on a nice bag?

Lately I have been thinking about purchasing a very expensive designer bag. It is around £1000, so it would be a huge investment. I really like it, but I don't know if a bag, albeit very nice, is ever worth spending so much money. I've never purchased such an expensive bag, the bags I already own are in the £200/300 territory.

What is the maximum you would be willing to spend on a bag? Do you think it ever makes sense to spend a lot on it?

My mum baulked at spending £45 on one in M&S.

I have spent around £150 at the most and may go up to £200-ish, but I'd never spend £1K on a bag because a) I think above a certain price it is the name and not the quality you are paying for b) bags do tend to go out of fashion c) I'd feel ostentatious with a £1K bag- just not 'me'.

I don't think it makes sense to spend £1000 on a bag, personally, but it's your money.

The max I would spend (in principle) is £200-300 for a good leather bag, but I never have had to spend that much. I buy mine from discount outlets - got 3 for about $350 at Coach recently.

Personally £500 is my limit. But your money, your choice.

Would you consider a plastic bag and put the rest towards a bench?

Up to £200 but then it would have to be a 'classic' design and I would make myself get 8-10 years out of it (like the leather satchel I have under the stairs!)

If I were buying it for myself, I would probably stick to under about £300.

My dh bought me a Mulberry Bayswater. I love it, but I do think it's ridiculous to spend that much on a bag.

I'm not a bag person, but hubby bought me red bow shoes and the matching bag from Irregular Choice for Xmas ready for our cruise in the summer, and the bag is amazing. No idea how much it cost, but he wouldn't spend much on one. And neither would I.

The bag I use every day for work cost more than £1000! It is a lot of money but I have a very professional job where image is important. Mine is tan and very smart/classic and I love it!

I am a bag lady and do have quite a few in the £200-£500 range too. If it makes you happy, is a classic style and most importantly, you can afford it, why not?

I am not a bag person, but if I spent more than £50 I'd expect to use it daily for several years before needing to replace it. Perhaps that is unreasonable.

My bags run from $200 - $400 USD. But they are all quality-made and classic design. I'll be able to carry them for the rest of my life. I wouldn't have a problem with spending $1000 USD on a bag, BUT it would have to be perfect in every detail; material, design, colour, compartments, size. I wouldn't spend that much if I had to compromise on anything.

I looked more than once at a Vuitton bag that was around $2000 USD. But in the end I didn't like the inside of the bag so I didn't buy it.

I bought myself a Small Bayswater Satchel in the sale. £590 down from £890 and I love it That said, because it's by far the nicest of my bags I've only used it a couple of times on days when weather is good

I'd spend a lot as in thousands. I don't feel any need to justify that to anyone or buy a bench instead

£500 is my limit. I have a few that cost around £200-ish (Anya Hindmarsh outlet buy, £180 down from £600, a ridiculous but gorgeous Mulberry mini Lily, £200 in the sale, a Kate Spade zip top bag, £100 from Bicester, an Ally Capellino shoulder bag half price at £130).

I love all of these because they are beautiful bags and make my day better for using them, but are not so ridiculously expensive that I am scared to use them. Plus, while they are indeed lovely, I am so so glad I haven't paid full price - there is no way the Anya Hindmarch bag for example 'feels' like it's a £600 handbag. As far as I'm concerned it's my money and I can spend it on whatever I like

About £70 here, I always, always tire of them after a few months, find the straps slip off my shoulder, there aren't enough or are too many pockets, or the pockets are the wrong size, fastenings are fiddly, interior is too dark, bag is too heavy when full etc. So although I could afford it, the risk of not liking it enough to get longterm use out of it is too high.

I think about £300 would be my max, as its a price that would buy something lovely, but Id feel comfortable using it. I don't think i could use a £1000 bag, as id be worried about damaging it!!!

I do think you need to be comfortable with whatever bag you choose. Going from a £200 bag to a £1000 bag is a big jump. Maybe you should look at bags at around the £500-£700 mark and see how they compare. You may find you are happier at that level or you may find that you really want the more expensive one.

My work bag was well over £1k. I use it every day, it's well organised, it has a shoulder strap and adjustable handles that can be lengthened so it can be worn over the shoulder too. It's good quality, timeless, and I hope will last many many years. I spent a lot of time looking at cheaper alternatives, and couldn't find anything suitable. I don't regret the purchase at all.

I think I don't "get" bags, really. I've been looking for one recently, and just out of curiosity looked at some of the uber expensive designery ones and I honestly think 90% of them are hideous.

I like the mid-range ones, just really really nice brown or grey leather, simple, functional designs. Tres boring but oh well!

The most I ever spent was £800. I wouldn't spend more than that and quite frankly I shouldn't have to. That bag needs to last forever!

For me it's around £250. I've come into some money recently and could spend quite a lot more on a bag if I chose to, but I can't bring myself too. Not that I judge people who do spend thousands on bags, if you can afford it then it's up to you what you do with your money.

Not a "stealth boast" but I have spent over £2k on one of those classic Chanel handbags. Dont regret it for a second- i use it a few times a week and it looks as new. My mum has one thats nearly 40 years old and doesnt look it.

I'm not a bag person, but if it was shoes or clothes I'd say spend what you can afford, if it's over a grand I'd expect it'll last a long time and you'll get a lot of use out of it.

I don't really 'get' bags though, unless you walk around a lot they're either in the car with you or under a desk or on the floor in a restaurant.
